Can I get tips on how to perfect the car rolling shots?
Maybe its because I didn't use a tripod?

Here's my attempt at the globe thing. The pany I used wasn't the best but I wanted something with lights and a dark background. It kind of looks like a spaceship. Kind of neat how simple and interesting these things come out but it really should only be used for fun. I'll probably take time and effort to compile a better looking one....but this is just kind of a test anyways.

I work right down the street from there. That's in Berkeley right?

It can reduce lens flare from light and also stops raindrops and stuff getting on your lens.

If it was one of those huge flower ones it could get in the way of the autofocus but an average one wouldn't be any worse than a lot of telephoto lenses.

I really need to get one as I'm doing a bit of landscape stuff right now and the weather is terrible - really spoils images when you have big raindrops on the lens.

Thanks for the info... I picked one up (the model specified in the manual for the Nikon D40) and noticed that when taking photos zoomed out at 18mm, thelens hood casts a small shadow at the bottom of my picture... does this mean I have to take off the hood everytime I take 18mm photos with a flash? thanksagain...

^ Just buy a shorter lens hood. It's probably not that expensive for a Nikon DSLR. I have one lens for my hasselblad where I don't have the appropriatehood but that's because lens hoods for a hasselblad are like 100+ and I don't feel like paying that, for a Nikon I bet they're like $20ish...

from looking at your exif data...your apertures are at f/13 and up..and thats too high. your shutter speed is a little fast but it works...
so try a lower aperture .... your iso seems alright but if it still comes out blurry...try a higher iso with the risk of the image being noisy.
hope thathelps.

Damn, this thread is pure gold.

I just purchased a Canon 350D Rebel XT (got a great price), gonna be in here a lot to school myself! Y'all got some sick pictures.

Time to get crackin' on the manual.

Been away for a meeting in London for a couple of days and I managed to get out for an hour last night to try and take some pictures.

I just discovered that St Pauls Cathedral is near the hotel I always stay in so I took 2 pictures. They're both taken from either on or beside TheMillenium Bridge which is pretty cool too.

I'm just having a fiddle with them on my laptop now - going to have a better look tomorrow.

I'm not convinced they're absolutely sharp either - I've been moaning about that since I got my D40 and I think I have to try and work out if thereis something wrong with my camera or with me.

These were taken with a tripod and a remote release but it was windy and the exposures were pretty long - the bridge moves a little so that could make adifference to the first one and the tripod was probably vibrating on the second too. I was mostly concentrating on trying to keep the rain off my lens - Istill had to use the healing brush to get rid of 2.

Something simple from yesterday. I am kind of getting used to my DSLR a little better but not really........

I've just printed a copy of the St Pauls picture so I now have a set of 6 in my office. I tidied it up a little (and today it doesn't have thePhotomatix watermark on it as I used my real copy at work.

I took the cranes out of the background and a few other little things and I think it is a little better.

What were you doing in London/who do you work for? I'm headed back in September myself, can't wait. I'll post my pics from Europelater today.

On a side note, can anyone help me get my name on the pic? I don't have photoshop, but I also want to make sure these remain mine and so nobody jacksthem...

^ you can just tag a pic with paint or any basic graphics package.

That is a composite of a few different pictures. The shortest was 8s I think and the longest was 30. 20s was about right at f/8.

I work for myself but I'm on a national council for optometrists so I was down for a meeting to do with that - we have an office about half a mile fromwhere I took that pic. I go down 5 or so times a year at the moment. Back again in a couple of weeks I think. Next time I'm going to take the sleeper trainto see what it's like - it gets in early so I might try some early morning stuff instead of late night. Don't normally get the opportunity to do thatas I can't be bothered getting out of bed.

Yo, help ya boy out. I got a tag I want to use on my pics. I can seem to place the tag on the picture without the white background from the first image.

for example...

Nike_logo.jpg

How would I move just the nike to a pic without having to move the entire picture(the white background) with it. Thanks...
