Allen Iverson to officially retire from the NBA, vol. HWhat?

Probably the 3rd biggest icon the sport of basketball has ever seen.  People left and right can say what they want to be it good or bad about Iverson, but as an icon he will always be remembered.

Um nah yo.  MJ, Magic, Bird, Dr J, Wilt, Kareem, Bill Russell, Kobe, Lebron.   And Durant will soon pass him.

LOL.  To be an ICON champ, you have to be an original......a 1 of 1.  With that being said, that takes Kobe right out of the equation.  He's nothing more than a wanna-be, everyone should know that.  Both Lebron and Durant are great, or are on their way to being truly great, but most people don't have a real deep connection to either outside of the basketball court.  That's what happens when your icon status.  As for the legends that you listed, I'm not going to argue or debate about them as they are legend status, but I will say that legend status does not equate to icon status.......which is what A.I. is/was.  Any and everybody wanted to be A.I.

This. Honestly, there's really only a couple true icons of the game...MJ for sure, AI for sure, Dr. J... It's deeper than sports..it's appearance, personality, style, swagger, voice, ideals, etc. How many folks have you seen mimicking KD? or rocking the headband hella far back on some Lebron ish and they were serious about it? How many dudes you know lied and said they had Aids while tossing no looks?

Don't even get me started on the sleeve..

Iverson had a pretty good career though but Him being an ICON is a false statement. Iverson wasnt close to being a icon.

THIS!!

definitely true this guy started shooting sleeve trend before it was popular :smokin i'm not fan of him but i was growing up in his era (pre - lebron era)

Shame how his last few years played out. Ego is something else though. Seeing fisher still in the league, stackhouse, kidd and grant hill playing until last season makes me feel iverson coulda still been and could still be a productive player had he swallowed his pride, came off the bench and took that role other players past their prime eventually did.

uh Durant cant pass Iverson in that regard. How iconic is kd really? cmon now

you'll see

2001 NBA Playoffs Run

the way he looked down at lue after hitting the shot was one of my fav ai moments ever, i think ive watched it over 1000 times

not even gonna go into how much he meant to me way way back when not enuff time in tha dai, even lost friends due to them just not getting how unreal and beyond belief this cat was/is

broke or rich, playin or retired, he is and always will be the ANSWER to all you ever QUESTION

GOD BLESS HIM

Some cats are clueless. Dude was like a GOD to every young black kid when he was in his prime. Why do you think so many people and NBA players are tatted up now? Why does everyone in the NBA wear a sleeve?

AI still doesn't get the props he deserves imo. 1st ballot hall of famer.

People think MJ is a douche outside of the court, how did people form a deep connection with him outside of the arena? He is an icon because of his basketball skills. Lets not try to redefine the word icon now. Kobe is an Icon, maybe not to you but to plenty of people here and abroad. A way bigger icon than AI ever was. Dude is a god in China. I don't understand it but grown men where crying seeing this man. We know you don't like the guy but be reasonable.

if you are in agreement that this is the general definition of the word, then most of the men mentioned so far ARE. You can add on to that definition, at least...the word... ENDURING

if u think Kobe is not an icon, i would with respect greatly disagree. He will be talked about til the game no longer exists, so forever, just like guys like magic, jordan, and so on

imho its easier to achieve icon status once u are done playing, when u r talked about, refernced, still loved, and still having millions devoted to u after yer playing days are over....well there arent as many as one would think. bill russell was a great great player, but icon ?????? he usually comes up when talking number of rings and best player ever yes, but other than that, he didnt nor did his 'style' effect too many. AI forced the league to install a dress code if im not mistaken, his hair among other things has been mentioned in this thread alot, still getting alot of attention and always will, good or bad dont matter

current players question ???? : lebron (yes) KD (by the end yes) kobe (yes) WHO ELSE THAT CURRENTLY PLAYS, seriously ?

i love cp3 to death but he will never be an icon, same as lets say...derek rose, blake griffin, dwade, kg ........

i put mr tim duncan in the bill russell category, great great great player, but as far as standing for something or effecting attitudes or style, no

just a few thoughts , hope i didnt bore ya too much

hope i didnt offend anyone

and fwiw whenever i saw mj in chapel hill, he was as cold as a whor3z goodbye to everyone ....... thats what u can do when u r tha GOAT :D

but so many other factors contribute to this such as change of times, media, social media, race etc.... I feel what you saying, but a good amount of players that will be legends nowadays...(not to take anything away from them) benefit greatly from media/social media.

Imagine if wilt with all his accolades and achievements (on and off the court) in todays media... and with todays social media ie.... youtube, twitter etc... Dude probably would be talked about just as much as mj if not more just of the strength of a 100 pt game and his off court escapades.

so was ai...matter fact until he had a few years in the league ai was bigger then even yao ming in china. I mean they had dedicated websites, they were even doing cornrows. Kobe fame/legacy is strictly for his on court accomplishments, while ai was a little of this, but mostly his persona and his image.

very good point about the change in times. its been said alot, imagine if there was twitter and ig even in mj's days. would he post what he was wearing like kd and lbj sometimes do ? jordan would have had even less time to himself , woulda been ridic

man if there was social media in wilts day i got a feelin most of it if not all woulda been on that rated x tip, sans the 100 pt game. instead of what kicks im wearin today, sir chamberlain prob woulda posted what im *****1n todai

is SHAQ an icon ??????

BIRD ???????

jus wonderin

You have no idea what you're talking about. Seriously did you even watch basketball before this era?

Iverson's cultural impact on the younger generation is iconic status, more so than anyone in the League right now

And yes, Iverson is my favourite player ever. Nobody comes close
