Came in this thread expecting a couple laughs and legit advice.

Got a laugh and some legit advice.

Then jealousy.

So because travelers have to be careful when they visit India is the reason why "They're coming here"?

Nah b, thats the way of life in India.

Indians come here for more opportunities, just like any other group of people coming to America.

it was an ignorant thing to say..
bro...

It can go both ways... They're coming here to seek or opps or get away from a bad situation...

Same thing can be said about any hood in america... People move out to either A. Get better ops or B. Leave a bad situation...

Also, youre getting offended when i said "they"... Would ithave been better if i said indian?

I know they have a little bit of classism, but that's about it.

Was in this pre-med program for awhile and this Indian chick told me how when she was back home she got into a bus and had to stand.

Her friend called her by her last name and old people were instantly getting up to give her a seat. Seemed kinda weird and kinda cool at the same time.

Would like to visit one day.

 Then jealousy.
Say what?
From the dudes talking about their sights.

I've never left the USA before. Hell I barely even get the chance to leave my hometown. Im trying to see the world.

Always get a little bit jealous of people when they say they've been to XYZ.

^^^ I heard the class stuff is legit real..

Like... If you're born into a certain family that does XYZ.... That's all you're destined to be...

Not everywhere ... But some places...

Good luck OP, I have not heard good things about India or surrounding countries. I'm sure you will have a good time

Seems like you know a bit about it.

I never researched that much to be honest.

Do last names play a large part in their society? And are the Indians that come here usually of a higher status? Or can the average family afford to send a child to the states?

There is classism. Where I'm from at least. My last name is considered higher class (Punjabi Jatt type last name, for my indian NT'ers)

My cousin in india be all over posting his last name just to rub it in

I could give a damn about a last name, I have respect for everyone.

But yeah that's true what she said.

my dad told me a story about when his mom died (my grandma), they were at the funeral, and the servant of the family at the time was removing some dirt from the ground so it wouldn't be even, my dad asked him "what are you doing?"

The servant said "you're on a higher level than me, so i must make the ground lower so i can sit at master's (my grandma) funeral"

My dad told him to stop and said it was okay to just sit.

Right in the feels

Last names do play a big part, but it's not the end all be all.

Higher status in the sense that they probably have a higher class last name, but not in the sense of money. My dad came here with 20 bucks in his pocket, and make well over 6 figures now. worked hard his whole life, and nothing was given to him.

Average family really can't afford to. at least from my experience.

Last names to some extend, but more is about the skin, the lighter your skin is as an Indian, the higher you are in the class you are. And only mid to higher class can travel and come to the US or any other countries for that meter. Bottom line, there is a lot of sad things to see, a lot of shocking as well, but there is good too.

I've heard of stories like this before. It really makes you look at life in a different perspective.

This is true as well, but not for the most part. There are SOME lower-class people from India who made it out to the America. But the ratio is small.

Thanks guys! Question I may not have time for all the immunization shots before I leave (if I decide to go, it's for a job) it was last second type thing but I'm getting paid well so I want to go. Are all shot required? And if I don't have time to get them is that going to be a bad thing? (Like deal breaker type of bad) we are staying in nice places from what I understand. I'm paying for nothing the company is. I've heard thy are mandatory but I don't see proof of that, they are just highly suggested, some take a month to do in cycles and I leave way before then

The Hell kind of shots are required?

Interesting thread. I'm Indian as well (half by way of Guyana). There is a lot I don't know about that side of my family and culture.

Get vaccinated, specially if you've never been out of the country, it's just smart to.

Drink only bottled water. You'll avoid sickness this way.

If you're landing in New Dehli, don't give your bags to anyone, some dudes act like they work there, but they'll run off with your bags.

If you're buying stuff from street vendors, always bargain, specially since you'll look like you're not from there, they will try to milk you.

Don't eat any boneless chicken.

Beggars will beg, if you give, be prepared for a BUNCH of them to come and beg more and not let you move until you give. My advice is to not give unless it's like one of them.

If I think of anymore I'll post.

Didn't read all responses yet but all of this is spot on.

Went to India solo for business 2 years ago (Mumbai, Delhi, Nashik, Noida)

I've been to mainland China on factory visits and saw a lot of poverty, but India was on a whole other level.

Didn't do any site seeing so can't help you there.

My best advice is… enjoy it as much as you can. You may never get to go back and even if it was a "bad" trip, you will always long to visit again.

I was a tiny bit prepared for my trip… I lived in Jackson Heights for like 5 years. Haha.

So if everyone wants to be lighter skinned I'll assume they must be racist towards blacks.

I don't think I want to visit anymore lol.

There aren't too many blacks in India. Matter of fact, some of them might call you African, because they associate Black people to Africa most of the time.

You can't think of India that way though, because most parts of the world share the same sentiment.

all of this. and even with bottled water, make sure it looks like a new bottle and it's fully sealed. street vendors will refill bottles if they can, so be weary.

black and dark skinned people are treated fine in larger cities...they just won't let you marry their daughters. half serious.

but you'll be fine from a race acceptance and religion acceptance standpoint.
