The Marmot Mammoth "Biggie" parka sparked Saturday's shooting at Bryant Park.

This coat is to die for.

The popular parka that sparked Saturday night’s shooting at the Bryant Park skating rink was previously linked to the murders of two city teens — enough bloodshed to prompt its manufacturer to pull the plug on it and leave the only city store selling it to get rid of its last ones.

In January, Raphael Ward, 16, of the Lower East Side, was gunned down by a masked man after refusing to hand over his  coat — also known as the “Biggie.”

Two years earlier, Malik Jenkins, 18, of The Bronx, was struck and killed by two cars while trying to escape a gang demanding his “Biggie.”

Marmot Mountain LLC discontinued the product — according to a worker at Paragon Sports near Union Square, which once sold the goose-down-filled coat with detachable hood for $680 — after word of the deadly violence got back to the manufacturer.

“They sold really well, but the company didn’t want to be associated with that,” the worker said. “They didn’t want the negative attention.”

Store employees noted that some bought the coat for its big pockets — to stash guns and drugs in.

On Sunday, Paragon had only one “Biggie” left in stock: a purple, triple-extra-large model marked down to a mere $200.

“We put the rest on sale to move them out,” one worker said. “Paragon doesn’t want to affiliate itself with an item that’s going to cause violence.”

Marmot didn’t return an e-mail seeking comment.

The Marmot Mammoth Jacket is filled with down, has a zip-off hood and boasts lots of pockets — all for about $700 or $800. It's also a status symbol among teens in New York, leading to shootings like the one in Bryant Park on Saturday.

Corey Dunton's alleged shooting spree at Bryant Park on Saturday was not the first time bullets went flying in New York because of the Marmot Mammoth coat, also known as “the Biggie.”

The utilitarian down jacket, which usually runs between $700 and $800, was the cause of bloodshed in at least two previous instances.

The 11th-grader had just bought the jacket.

The coat was mysteriously discontinued last year, a Paragon Sports sales rep told the Daily News.

The rest of the coats in stock went on clearance for $200, and sold out a few weeks ago, the rep said.

Alleged Shooter: Corey Dunton, 16, has been arrested by NYPD following the shooting at Bryant Park's skating rink last night in Manhattan which has left a 14-year-old boy paralyzed

A New York teenager has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly opened fire at skaters in Manhattan's Bryant Park and then seemed to confess to the crime on Facebook.

During an hour-long standoff at his Bronx apartment on Sunday morning, Corey Dunton, 16, wrote on the social media website: 'Feds trien [sic] kick down my door its over were do i go from hereeeee...[I don't know] wat to do i f----ed up.'

Minutes later, he added: 'These n----s gunna have to take me out take my life … I aint goin to jail i reather [sic] take my life!!'

The alleged gang member is accused of shooting two men at the ice rink because of a dispute with another man over a coveted 'biggie' jacket he was wearing.

When police began banging on his door at around 8 a.m., he posted: 'Feds at my door Im goin out with a bang!!!!!!! take my soul.'

He is suspected to be a member of the Bloods gang and was taken to the Midtown South precinct house in Manhattan where he refused to answer questions and demanded a lawyer.

The teenager allegedly fired on Javier Contreras, 20, of the Bronx, but in doing so hit Adonis Mera, 14, of Manhattan who now faces being paralyzed from the waist down.

Police believe that Contreras was targeted for the particular Marmot Mammoth 'biggie' jacket he was wearing and was shot in the hand and the hips.

A source with the NYPD confirmed that Contreras and Dunton knew each other.

The arrest of Dunton comes after the distraught family of 14-year-old Mera expressed their fears he will never walk again.

Currently being held in Bellevue Hospital in a critical but stable condition, Mera's brother Jorge Arias told the New York Daily News he visited to see his injured sibling.

'I didn’t really try to get him to speak,' Arias, 24, said. 'I just wanted to see his face. He’s a baby. He’s a little kid.'

Contreras was approached by the gunman and asked to hand over his jacket. When he refused the shooter left the rink but returned minutes later to unleash three gunshots - hitting both Contreras and Mera.

This is not the first time the puffy 'biggie' jacket has become a source of problem in New York.

The jacket, which costs $600, is believed to be the source of a scuffle in the Lower East Side earlier this year which led to Raphael Ward, 16, being shot in the chest over the coast.
The coat was discontinued by Paragon Sports last year and as such has become a desirable and rare piece of fashion.

The shocking incident happened just after 11pm Saturday, on the skating rink in the heart of the popular midtown park located at 42nd Street and 6th Avenue.

Witnesses of the harrowing incident took to Twitter to share their accounts and photos from the crime scene.

‘People just fell on the floor because they heard a gunshot and they had ice skating skates on so they couldn’t run,’ said Raghuram Krishnamachar, 29, of Brooklyn, who was eating dinner with his girlfriend and her family at the park’s second-floor restaurant Celsius.

‘People were scared they didn’t know what was going on,’ he said.

Krishnamachar said he heard three shots ring out and saw skaters down below scramble for safety, while one person lay motionless on the rink. He posted a photo of the scene on Twitter.

He said restaurant patrons were told to lie on the floor and eventually were ushered to a back room.

‘We didn’t know anything. The shooter could’ve been a lunatic with a machine gun,’ he said.

Gunned down: Police say one of the victims was hit in the back while the other was struck in the leg

A witness told the New York Times Saturday night that he saw a man skate up to another person in the middle of the rink, pull a gun and open fire.

In total, three shots reportedly rang out, sending park goers running for cover, some of them wearing only socks.

A young woman believed to be a victim's sister was heard exclaiming, ‘My brother 'just got shot in front of my face.'

Christopher Guerrero, 19, said one of the victims was a friend named Adonis, identified by MailOnline as Adonis Mera.

According to Mr Guerrero, the teenager told him he could not feel his legs as he was lying on the ice.

On his Facebook account, Mera posted a message Friday about his weekend plans: 'Catch me at Bryant Park!!'

Shorty before the shooting, the boy wrote on his page that the park was packed with people.

Early Sunday morning, Mera's numerous friends and well-wishers took to Twitter to post messages of support for the injured young man.

Arelis Marie wrote: 'The fact that people can't go ice skating without someone tryna catch a body is crazy! Pull through Adonis, we're praying for you.'

First aid: Mera was loaded into a waiting ambulance with his skates still on and rushed to Bellevue Hospital

NYPD officers converged on the park after receiving reports of shots fired and quarantined some 50  skaters, who were later released after being questioned by police.

Joe Carella, a spokesman for Bryant Park Corporation, the not-for-profit company that privately manages the park, said the park is virtually crime free.

In the 1970s, Bryant Park, like much of Midtown Manhattan, had been taken over by drug dealers, prostitutes and homeless people and was considered a no-go zone by law-abiding city dwellers.

The park went through a massive overhaul in the late 80s, emerging as an exemplary urban green space after a 4-year renovation, which was praised by Time Magazine as a ‘small miracle.’

These days, the park is packed with office workers on fair-weather weekdays, tourists and families on the weekends and ice skating enthusiasts during the winter months.
A Jacket to Die for: Selling Marmot Biggies in NYC
By Noah Johnson | Nov 11, 2013 | 2:24 pm | Permalink

Written by Noah Johnson.

My first job out of college was at Paragon Sports, just outside of Union Square. It was 2005. I'd been living in Colorado spending most of my time snowboarding, doing other outdoorsy things, so I was well- qualified for the job of selling high-end sporting equipment to overpaid yuppies. I took the job hoping I'd meet backcountry skiers or mountain climbers and help outfit them for their next expedition.

But that's not exactly how it went down.

"We'll put you on outerwear," my manager told me on day one. I wanted to be in the sneaker or snowboarding department, but it was early fall, and with winter coming, I was told that I'd make a much better commission in outerwear. "Selling big boys," he said.

1384196212_marmot.jpg

It never occurred to me that I was the last link in a chain that had an occasionally lethal end.

A big boy, or biggie, I learned, is the street name for the Marmot Mammoth Parka, a heavyweight down jacket with a Gore-Tex shell. They came in a few different colors—that year the most popular was slate blue—and cost around $700. For each one we sold, I got $7 or $8, nearly double what I'd make for the next highest commission item (a technical ski jacket from Arc'Teryx that almost no one ever so much as tried on).

It was rare I'd meet any sort of athlete. Almost all of my sales were to European tourists, old people who get very cold in the winter, and young black kids looking for biggies, or Marmots. They were the biggest and most expensive jackets on the floor. I often encouraged these customers to consider a more practical piece.

"It really doesn't ever get cold enough in New York to need a 700 fill down jacket," I'd advise them. "If it's cold enough for a jacket this heavy, you won't need a Gore-Tex shell because it'll be snowing, not raining."

I wonder if I might have sold a jacket to a kid who died for it.

But those who were looking for a biggie didn't care about my outerwear knowledge or sensibly battling the elements.

They just wanted to know if I had it in XXL or XXXL. If we didn't have it in stock (a rare occurrence; Paragon's stockroom seemed to have an endless supply, and very few in size medium or smaller), they'd leave without considering anything else.

When I did make a sale, I was happy to get the commission. Still, though, I thought it was odd that Marmot would make a piece with no sports application exclusively for Paragon, and sell it for so much, and make so many in such big sizes, but it didn't seem immoral.

Years later, when I hear that there have been terrible  violent  crimes linked to biggies, I wonder if I might have sold a jacket to a kid who died for it. At the time I knew how coveted they were, and I knew about kids getting jumped or worse for Starter jackets and Jordans, but I didn't think Marmots had that power.

As a writer for Noisey pointed out, the reviews  on Paragon's site warn potential buyers "this is not the coat for yu if yu live in NYC yu will get robbed." Turns out, the crucial facts about this jacket were beyond my area of expertise. I was a retail employee and I was just doing my job. I never considered the possible repercussions of a sale. In the same way that a fast food restaurant worker slinging deadly doses of fat to the masses doesn't think twice about putting money in the register, I was happy to put my little commission sticker on all those Marmot price tags. It never occurred to me that I was the last link in a chain that had an occasionally lethal end.

its a BX thing ?
marmots aka merms been steadily rising in popularity since i was still in high school in 2003, back then marmot only had 1 style, and it was da marmot parka GORE-TEX

**** was 700 dollar back in da jersey era, and basically da only people who had em in my school were da dudes who sold drugs or had a retail gig on da side, i wasn't sold

on em back then, still in actually tried one on a few years later, once i realized da hype da legit (they're MAAAAAAD WARM) i copped a black goretex one.

for da record, they made a base model version of da marmot parka with NO goretex and less fill called a Marmot White Horse for a few years, but they discontinued

it, that particular model was called a marmot white horse.

and i guess 2012 was da last year they still made da GORETEX marmot.

only da GORETEX version of da marmot is refered to as da "biggie" aka Big Boy, cuz it was da most expensive, and warmest one with da best specs, all others aren't known

as a bigboy/biggie

tell you what, da IronMerm is ready to take its place if they discontinued da parka...

1310_9196_f.jpg

and all those goretex marmot coats still out WILL start going for more cake they start to become more rarer and rarer...

da one i own was from 2010, they would make SLIGHT changes to em every year to differentiate em.
