Dropping out of college

I'm 19 and I did badly my Freshman year at St. John's because my mind just wasn't in it. I had to take this past semester off for financial reasons partially resulting from that so I'm finally about to start community college in January, and I know that this still isn't what I want to be doing with my time :smh:

I'm strong at math, so I know that the wisest move for me would probably be to go the Accounting route

Accounting is NOT math  if you're doing it for math you'd be better off doing something like actuarial science, or even finance.

Once you get deeper into it, accounting is nothing but rules & regulations.

Please reconsider.

I just realized that it sounded like I chose Accounting just because I'm good at math

I actually already had an Accounting class my senior year of High School that ran through most of the basics and it was a breeze for me. I also have a few Accountants in my extended family, so it's been something I've been interested in for almost a decade. I was looking more towards Risk Management at this point though, but a lot of schools don't have that as a major.

I took a 'leave of absence' from grad school... I have no intention of going back at this time.

Take some time to think about what you really want to do and what you have to do to get it done.

Make a step by step plan and set up a time frame. I have my next 3 years planned

Alot of other ways to be successful. College doesn't automatically mean happiness and money, too many people think that.

School isn't for everyone but if you don't know what to do after you drop out of school, i'm gonna guess you don't have a certain skill that your good at either. Your in for a rough life if you think you can survive off of fast food or retail jobs.

oh ok, u good then

Im 25 now and at your age I had no idea what I was doing. I was attending a decent public university but reality is I was only going to school just to GO. Thought I had a goal (become a businessman and make tons of money) but really I was a lost boy in a lost world. Fast forward, 3-4 years later and I see the power of education and learning. I agree you don't always need to go to college to be successful, but your degree is at least a plan B. You sacrifice 2-3 years of your life in college and you will have your degree for the rest of your life. It will take time for you to mature and realize what you think you want out of life. In the meantime, get a education, make some new friends, and drink some good beer. Or you can move back in with your parents and work at your local retailer until it dons on you, you should have finished college at the age of 28. Anyways, whatever you choose, your not the only one feeling this way. Your 20's is an important transition period into adulthood. A very important one actually. Think hard but realistically. And the time is now, don't wait. Good luck man!

You might just need a break. I started college straight out of highschool and I burnt out the third semester. I switched schools so I could take classes online but I couldnt handle it so I took a break. During that time I got a Job at my school and worked my way up to the position I have now. I started school again last semester and I have been doing a lot better compared to when I first started.

Is there anything you like to do or are good at? Like Ricky said, how much more do you have to go? I'm actually graduating next Spring from my CC, but I'm going to join the Electric Union, instead of transferring, in order to start funding my brewing endeavors. You can always go back (I actually plan on going back in like 10-15 years), but try to have something as a backup because doing nothing only leads doing no good (at least in my experience). Good luck with whatever you do tho, you got my support.

i recommend speaking with your advisors, and start taking less classes. even if it is just 2 a semester. thats what im currently doing and juggling a full time job. it was tough for me and im only 1 year older than you. thinking about how long it may take to finish may discourage you but as long as you finish famb. stay positive OP and g'luck.

What's your situation? Are you unmotivated? Or are you about to get kicked out of your college? If it's both, I've been in your shoes before. If you're really going to drop out you better have a plan B ready. Mine was enlisting in the Air Force. My advice is to hang in there. If you're still in your first couple years then don't worry, nobody knows what they want to do. Just make sure you are doing everything you can to pass your tracking courses and you'll still have your options open. Don't be lazy, if you work hard you'll get somewhere, even if you don't know where yet.
