The Mecca in Decline: Why doesn’t New York City produce elite NBA talent like it used to? (article)

ballhandling and driving to the lane with abandon was always the nyc game - once the and1 tapes starting circulating, it was a wrap. when i see drose and wade (prime) play, i see nyc players. also nyc has alot of courts, but mostly outdoors. fall/'winter, we lose the majority of those while kids from other regions can play anywhere. marbury was nice and was nice in the league, he went off the rails attitude-wise, but can't doubt his ability. kenny anderson imo is the best ever guard from nyc. someone like kareem is probably best overall

also a lot of the elite kids either go to a cushy prep school or go to the burbs or jersey. noah got mvp nods last year and went to poly prep (bk). cooke was as good a talent as anyone in his calss and went to tappan (nj). hodge was acc player of the year few years back. kemba destroyed. lance is on verge of all-star. nyc is do alright for "lean times"

What do you mean by this? Hard winters strike across the mid-atlantic.

No wonder NY players can't shoot. The gyms are too small.

Wait, rose and wade play like NYC dudes?

i meant northeast region -which nyc is a part of - gets hit hard by winters which takes most courts out of play for a good number of months.

Again...the entire mid-atlantic gets hit with the same weather - which they are NOT prepared for - in comparison to the northeast.

I don't buy the weather argument at all.

i think in my original post, i describe signature nyc guard play - slick handles and hard drives to the lane is traffic. you don't see that in either rose or wade. not saying they jacked anyone, just saying the nyc game has been absorbed by others naturally.

Na man it only snows in New York City.
don't recall saying that either, but if we're talking northeast bball, we probably talking nyc. unless there's some bball hotbed in the region that i'm missing. the weather affects the entire region. when weather gets bad like it does fall/winter, your only choice is to move it indoors. and for many schools, that means the bball players are sharing that court, with the volleyball team, gymnastics, handball, all of them. space and opportunity are two things that don't get taken into account. also why you don't see nyc football players make it big.

so there are other cities in the region that are producing numerous bball stars?

You're using weather as a reason as to why NYC basketball players are at a disadvantage.

Last I checked, not many people in the northeast/mid-atlantic are hooping outside when the conditions suck.

Impossible.

and i ask again, what other cities in this region are producing these elite players that you claim nyc does not?

read my last post. in my experience at least, once we got to the indoor gym, we shared space with other sports teams. sometimes we'd only get half the court. also outdoor areas have many courts. indoor will likely only have one.

200 miles away from NYC is PG county. You want me to start there? ****, you can cross the Hudson and go into Jersey...is that a better place to begin? You let me know.

I'm pretty sure it's extra cold in Chicago during the winter, yet they're still pumping out elite talent.

It's violent in the summer, yet still talent comes out

not far at all. and 200 miles in what direction, cause i'm betting south. nj producing nice hs talent. but nyc still produces that. dont forget alot of those nyc kids are attending nj schools. but the larger subject was pro, so what bounty of nj players is in the league killing?

couldn't speak to chicago's indoor situation, like i can for nyc. but i don't think it's a coincidence that the two players i referenced before you even brought up chicago were wade and rose whose games have that classic nyc flavor to them. kids play in the housing projects courts here too, so idk about violence being a big roadblock.

Saying rose and wade have a NYC game is disrespectful to everything that is Chicago.

anyone that knows nyc guard play know that both player's strength's are nyc guard hallmarks. i don't see how it's disrespectful. bball for a long time was the nyc game by a mile. is it that surprising that is got adopted and tweaked in other places? the same thing goes with hip hop. the game has spread.

it's odd to me that the thread asks the question, "what happened to nyc ballers" then when someone offers some theories, it's immediately shot down. i guess the real purpose is to draw the conclusion that nyc just "fell off" "got lazy" "got cocky" "is just overrated in every aspect". if that's the conclusion you need to draw to get your regional pride, then go for it. but i don't believe that nyc players just magically got lazy or stopped caring. the game spread out and some natural advantages of other areas started to play a big role in development. nyc had the game for a long time and therefore had a big head start. with that said, there is still elite talent coming out of the city.

200 miles where the weather is harsh and the local gov't doesn't know what do about it.

As far as Jersey (off the top of my head)...

Faried
Irving
West
JR Smith

Bynum was good. We'll what happens with Kyle Anderson and MKG. Also Randy Foye Sam Dalembert are ok. But only Irving is really approaching that other level I guess

irving-aside (possibly) i don't see elite players there.

i'd take noah over any of those listed.

cleanthony early -nyc who went elsewhere

taj gibson

hodge (all-american, acc (south) player of the year)

odom

telfair

lance

villanueva

meta

that list any weaker than yours?

Basketball just isn't a priority anymore for NYC. As AMP said, there are other options for kids now.

It's really that simple, to be frank. Also, the really good players end up leaving NYC because of all the distractions. Lance Stephenson and Moe Harkless may very well be the last good players to spend their entire HS basketball careers playing in NYC.

The better kids now just go to prep schools out out of state. The AAU circuit in NYC has changed so much as well. Hell, even the summer leagues in NYC isn't the same anymore. I.S. 8 is a complete joke now
