Damon Lindelof:

Q. I suspect there’s going to be some conversation about what the ending of the finale meant. Is Kevin dead? Is Kevin alive? I’m assuming you deliberately left that open to interpretation.

A. In terms of whether he’s dead or alive?

Yes. Or am I just crazy and it should be very obvious?

I don’t think you’re crazy, but I also don’t want to get cutesy in terms of saying what our intentionality was. Are you saying from the moment Kevin finishes his karaoke song and then sits up in the kennel, everything that happens from that point until the very end of the episode feels a little bit dreamlike?

Yes.

That was completely and totally intentional. The intentionality is more like the real world has become almost just as strange as this quote-unquote unreal world he’s just left. Again, I don’t want to say, like, “You have to read this interview to get clarity on it,” because I love the fact that the debate is happening. But I am here to tell you, by all definitions, Kevin is just as alive in the moment where he walks into the room and is surrounded by his entire family as he is when he’s jogging in the beginning of the pilot.

The last sentence is classic Lindelof... probably wants you to question whether he's been dead the entire time  (though I'm sure the answer really is that he's alive, this dude just can't help but talking like that)

Lol i was just about to say hell Kevin could have been dead from the beginning and this is his ghost life

John was just a broken man at the end. He looked broken like Kevin did last year. It would be crazy if Erika's dad turned into his Patty next year.

Yeah I'm not falling for his trap again.

I'm making it simple. Kevin is alive. He was in a coma from the poison and woke out of it and he survived the gunshot from John (which is possible).

If you really think about the real world was already weird as ****. Dudes who hug away your pain, a cult of silent ppl who want to make ppl believe the world ended, and a bunch of ppl just up and disappeared.

Think about it and that hotel purgatory world probably isn't as strange. All it had was some assassins, a guy who would hang you off a bridge, and a well where you can throw kids in.

I'm not going for Kevin was dead from the start. That doesn't make much sense at all. Then we were just living in this weird underworld or dreamworld of Kevin's where he made up all of this stuff.

Kevin singing karaoke was incredible... I thought they were gonna end it there too
Favorite part of the episode

and Kevin telling John "Nope" while bleeding out

So a bunch of people dressed up like the GR and went to the HBO offices in NY for a season 3.

Also, the ratings were supposedly the strongest for the finale (which isn't saying much, I think it was still less than a million viewers), and the season has been making a lot of "top 10" lists and things like that.

Maybe it's enough to get a third season.

Damn that's pretty cool.

I don't even smoke cigs but I would've been there puffing away standing in ppl's way on the sidewalk just being a nuisance

So no one's going to question any significance of the random earthquakes in the last ep?

One just happens after Nora basically says FU God and Mary suddenly snapping out of it after it.

And one just happens the second Kevin is about to enter his home.

What about the whole Australia connection. I NEED ANSWERS MAN!!!

The earthquakes seemed to coincide with something supernatural happening. It happens when the lake drains, Mary comes back, etc.

Specifically, it could be someone crossing over from the hotel (afterlife/purgatory) to real life. They have an earthquake effect when Kevin emerges from the ground after killing Patti (though not the second time after karaoke). Mary comes back from the hotel. The earthquake at the lake might not fit this theory though.

The last quake outside the house might've signified something we didn't see yet.

The Australian connection seems to be with the guy hanging around the afterlife. It sounds like he's guided others back (including Kevin's dad - who probably did something similar to get rid of his demon), and since he's Australian, those people are now obsessed with Australia I guess.

Plus Lindelof has a boner for Australia being a mystical place

It's a town that's known to have earthquakes. So none of them are really random

Story wise who knows about the timing of all of them. One clearly related to Matt's wife finally waking up. Then there was one when Kev came back from the dead both times I think.

I feel the most important one is right before Kev went to go in his house. I feel like something happened over at John's house cuz I think he was just entering his house when that one happened.

Someone needs to make a list of all the earthquake this season and the events that followed it. I'm sure there has to be a link the writers are trying to push since it was in that caveman intro also.

been two days since the finale and I honestly think I may just watch the series from start to finish completely...

damn this season was fire man

I posted this somewhere else on a site comments section, but imo the quakes represent life/death

Earthquake 1 - Cave closed in cave people died (premier)

Earthquake 2 - Kevin in the lake tried to kill himself

Earthquake 3 - Kevin reborn again

Earthquake 4 - Kevin before he walks in the house (finale)

did i miss any?

Oh yeah when Mary bounced back

Man im still trippin on how she had no lines for 2 full damn seasons and got paid.

"**** you angela"
"shut the **** up" - nora talking to that crazy girl  :pimp:
"****" - Kevin realizing he's back at the hotel

damn if i knew about the people outside the hbo offices, i woulda joined in. that looks like fun

Imagine having to hold that face and stare off into the distance while people are filming and acting around you. Easier said than done imo.

But man, this season was fuego. I like the first and this season was so much better. The acting, the music, all just phenomenal. Theroux deserves an Emmy nom for sure.

I think they ended it the way they did because there is no guarantee it's going to come back for a third season. I'm not sure how the ratings were but I think it was up against Walking Dead, right? The unfortunate part of that ending is that it could have very easily served as the series finale.

Still a lot of unanswered questions though. Like his dad/constant references to Perth and the earthquakes that you guys mentioned. Plus, you know the Garveys aren't just going to chill out in Jarden with all the chaos going on. Nora took a big L on the property value.
