What's wrong with being excluded in this type of discussion? Is it that harmful to step back and just listen for a minute? Certain people don't NEED to take part in the discussion. Those people - for once in their lives - need to listen to the perspective of others without jumping in and immediately making the subject about themselves.

I think if some people took things less like a personal attack and more like a teaching moment - this stuff would be a lot more beneficial to everyone.

These aren't shots at you specifically but in general. Even non-white people. Asians, latinos, indians, etc. There's a ridiculous amount of anti-blackness in those cultures. I'm Dominican. A large percentage of Dominicans are black and it STILL exists. So yeah - sometimes it's best to just give black people space and try to learn from a talk like this. Even if you're not intentionally racist, even if you enjoy the music, even if you're also a minority.

This will be watched tonight.For the record, I don't know if it matters but I'm Black/Puerto Rican...so I didn't take the white stuff as a personal attack since it wasn't directed at me. I just take issue with the tone in here.

And I wasn't being facetious when I asked if it was a discussion that should take place between only blacks.

I just really appreciated that this was a place, at times (rare moments :lol:), where race didn't matter and we could just discuss things without placing a certain value on opinions based on anything other than the words written.

Are you guys aware of the reviews this album has gotten?

Why does an album need to be out for X amount of time before people can say certain things about it?

I suggest some of you go back and read what people had to say about Illmatic when it first dropped.

Or any other great/classic album for that matter.

^^List these reviews from 1994 where critics were calling Illmatic the greatest album of all time and better then Paid in Full, It Takes a Nation, etc.?

bro..i love this album.. i've been bumping it nonstop and its creeping up my most played

however, its still not better than GKMC imo.

some of ya'll sound like whoever wrote that article on TheVerge.. that called kendrick the G.O.A.T. rapper and said this is the best album of the 21st century and best rap album since illmatic or ready to die in 94 :lol:

i give it a 5 after an initial 4.5 as it grew on me more, but chill

the hyperbole is gettin insane
 
How you gonna give it a 5 outta what I assume is a 5 and then call the hyperbole crazy. That's a perfect rating.

Illmatic stood the test of time as wiLL TPAB. I can confidently say this is better than anything Mr. Camel has ever put out, but so was GKMC.

well to be fair my initial instinct was 4.5...then i later said 4.75 (no IGN)..the album doesn't have any negatives, but it's still no GKMC for me. so if it is a 5 its a soft 5(no anthony fantano)

it's a great album don't get me wrong.. but to call it the best album rap album in 21 years and to call it goat already is straight comical.

With that said, without even discussing Kendrick, Illmatic is heavily overrated to me.

Go read Miss Info's OG review from 1994, she called it one of the best albums she's ever heard a few sentences into it if I remember correctly.

I don't really understand why dudes get so offended when someone says X > Y when it comes to albums.

I love NaS, Illmatic is a classic.

Are my jimmies gonna be rustled if someone thinks Aquemini or Supreme Clientele, etc... is "better"?

No not really, they're all pretty damn good at the end of the day.

Dudes in here acting like someone said Nastradamus is greater than Its Dark & Hell Is Hot or something.

Maybe it's because I was only 6 when illmatic came out and I didn't hear it til years later, but albums always been overrated to me. It's a good album and for the time it was probably fantastic. But people need to move on.
 
I was 6 when Illmatic came out too I didn't listen to it till was like 13. I thought it was a classic then and it still is. I don't see how you can be a fan lyrics and say Illmatic is overrated. I think cuz so many people praise it other people just wanna go against the grain. From the punchlines to the stories it's lyrically flawless. Now the production might sound dated but it was 21 years ago, of course it's gonna sound dated.


And I rock with Kendrick as much as anybody but can we just enjoy this album a lil bit more before we start comparing it to all time albums lol.

It has nothing to do with going against the grain. There's just nothing about it that sticks with me. The lyricism is pretty standard to me. Production is borderline leaking trash juice / boring. Only thing I really enjoy is his flow.
