It truly has me baffled. The reason I ask is because I have a good friend who that literally is all he listens to, and quite frankly I don't understand it.

In fact, with as much as he insisted I join them for a mostly EDM music festival, he finally talked me into going and I went in with an open mind. At the end I did have a great weekend, but I left still questioning how almost every single person in our group, (our group consisted of 40+ people) ONLY listened to EDM\. I can understand enjoying some of it. But most of it to me is just a guy on stage pressing play on his laptop. Not all the shows were like this, but a majority of them were.

And don't say drugs, I partook and the music was still meh to me a majority of the time.

Sheep. FOMO. That's all it is.

The "music" is in fact trash. So you're not crazy.

Its just noise to me. It makes me want to steal off somebody every time I hear it

You guys are no different than the white boys who "can't" listen to rap.

But I am white :rolleyes

lol.

Really though. I've seen easily 60 shows in the past 4 years, a lot of hip-hop and rap shows, but a decent amount of rock and indie as well. I can always find a take away talent wise from most shows I go to that aren't rap shows. I saw Matt and Kim at Bonnaroo in 2011, had NO idea who they were, and Kim went HAM on the drums... it was awesome.

But after the EDM shows I've gone to, my take away has always been, "Oh word, that guy just goes up there, opens up his iTunes, presses spacebar, plays generic sounding sounds, steps back and dances to it, and you guys all think he's talented and this is the greatest thing ever? Oh word."

Glitch Mob was pretty dope though, I'll admit that.

Yep, this edm stuff is straight up garbage. The CRAZIEST thing i JUST learned the other day from my lil cousin was that they have the nerve to call some of it "Trap Music." TI rollin in his grave right now. :smh:

A few things here....

A lot of these guys are geniunely talented producers. Let's not lose sight of that.

Yes, the songs sometimes leave a lot to be desired. Songwriting in the genre has only gotten good in the last 5-7 years or so.

And a lot of these guys have massive live followings. I'm not talking about the Calvin Harris', Tiestos, Avicii's etc that you hear on the radio.

But Kaskade sold out Barclays last year. Above & Beyond just sold out their presale for their show at MSG.

The music lives in the live. People go to the live shows for the experience. For the party.

I personally can't listen to it like THAT, but I have fun when I go to the events and Electronic music has always had a place in popular culture.

Inner City, Alice Deejay, Darude, etc etc etc.

And for the record, the term EDM is corny. Another corporate America label like "gangster rap".

The way the music is shifting now, to the deeper sound with Mr. Probz, Duke Dumont etc., it's not really "EDM" but it's still Electronic.

The same way "Gangster Rap" is just another type of rap music.

It's *really* fun to be there. I don't sit in the house and listen to it though.

I spent 4 days at a festival and the best part of the whole time was chilling in a hammock in the forest to me... I had fun at a few of the shows, but it got to a point where everything sounded the same, and nothing was original. I felt like I kept hearing the same mixes from each DJ.

If you enjoy some of it it's cool. I just don't get how all these people that is ALL they listen to. I swear every single person I met at that festival only listened to EDM.

What is the purpose of this thread?
"I don't like it but other people do, why do you guys like it when I think it's bad?"

Theres different genres to it.

Dubstep is booty. House is where is at same with some Electronica.

For the most part it is trash I agree, but there are some producers/djs that do have talent & make great music.

as @illphillip  mention, Kaskade, Deejay are talented/make good music.

Check this dude out OPEE.

also forgot to add, the music with its repetitiveness puts me in a trance like state & I just feel like giggin with the music.

& if youre on too, it just amplifies it, imo.

To be fair, I think it's stupid for anyone to listen to a single genre of music.

I guess people with no rhythm have an easier time dancing to some music that doesnt have rhythm.

I would love to be a edm "dj"and get paid a zillion dollars to press play but the music is so awful I would commit suicide before my set is over

What you fail to realize is damn near NONE of those guys is just a "dj" who presses play.

Pretty much every major DJ in the genre is major because they're a prolific producer first and foremost.

DJing is just a vehicle to play their music out.

There's more to DJ'ing than just "pressing play" too, a lot of the major guys get away with half assing it but to group all dj's with those and say they open itunes and hit play is pretty insulting.

Just Blaze, a dude that's loved on here, has been doing the same **** for the past year or 2.

smfhhh, EDM is so bunzzzzz...all the clubs play is this crap now too, what happ to Ns catching dubs at the club mayne...now everyone wanna jump around...weirdos

EDM is like listening to bomb instrumentals all day thats why I like it.  Trap Music is the bass heavy style, half the music on the radio nowadays has EDM influences in the instrumentals tho
