Scarlett was good in the marvel movies, so it's probably why this movie is even seeing the light of day. Hollywood's racist, so what do you honestly expect?
Only options are to not see the movie or buy more volumes of the original source material.
Regardless, i'm watching it. GITS's ost is great, hopefully the movie uses some tracks from it. One of my fav. Eps is when that dide's mind gets transfered into a tachikoma.

But would American audiences even want to go out and watch a movie where the main star is an Asian woman?
They made the character white for probably the same reason Japan made all of the people in the Attack On Titan movie Japanese. If I remember correctly, the anime only had one Japanese character.

They said the same thing about Black Actors, latinos and women before, it no different now.
Hollywood didn't think CBM movies would be huge, they thought sci fi was for nerds. Hollywood concept that certain races or genders don't sell is just ******** they choose to put who they want it's just another version of the good ole boy network.
There are stars out there regardless what color their skin is.

Well besides chick flicks, I dunno if those other movies are doing the kinda numbers studios want. tyler perry cross dressing movies are number one at the box office but with lower numbers and he makes the movies himself.
Forget Asian women being the star of a movie, an Asian guy can't be the star unless it's a martial arts movie. Jackie Chan and Jet Li are barely visible anymore.

Pretty much. People will go and see good movies. Hollywood just likes to keep everything in their inner circle whether it be fo to help their pals out or to maintain a vision of whiteness for media. But shows like Blackish, fresh off the boat, empire etc show that people don't really have an aversion to minorities( in generalizing. People are still racist, but good content gets consumed regardless). It's just that Hollywood thinks they do.
The difference is that Japan doesn't have a wealth of white actors freely living there and their movies don't have crazy budgets to be able to hire american actors for their movies. Also the dialogue has to be spoken in Japanese.
America is a diverse place and you can easily find a Japanese American actress to play the role and there is plenty of money for them to cast a Japanese actress and have them star in the movie

Yeah you can find a Japanese American actress but none of them have the star-power of ScarJo. And you need star-power to market a movie to make a profit. A different actress doesnt make the movie better or worse but people are more inclined to go see a movie with a well known name in a leading role. Thats what Hollywood wants. Profit.

The most well known Asian actresses in America are probably Lucy Liu and asa akira. They not getting lead Hollywood roles anytime soon.

yea cosign.. but at the cost of criticism no? i mean there will always be people who could care less about this stuff..they could cast miley cyrus to play selena in a biopic and people would still pay. but a lot of people will call foul on it at the same time. i think money is totally the reason but is never what they will admit.

You know why there aren't Asian actresses that are bigger stars? Because they aren't given the opportunity. How the hell do you know if you have an Asian star if you don't cast them? Movie stars aren't famous until they get big roles.
Pretty much. There's nothing to say an Asian American actress couldn't be huge. Scarlett Johansson is a draw because she gets roles that make money making her a draw that gets her roles that make money etc. if she never got a chance we wouldn't be having this conversation

This is nothing new. Countries make adaptations of stories, film, music, etc to fit their race/cultures all the time
Instead, we as a country should have more foreign films available to watch in the states to support these actors. You see movies like the avengers breaking records worldwide, but I don't see as many Korean/Japanese/Chinese cinema in the states. I have to find and stream them online. I would gladly pay and support if I could. I shouldn't have to wait for jet li or Jackie chan to release a new film for diversity. Ip man shouldn't be the only great film that gets in theaters
And it shouldn't have to be an action/Kung fu film for it to crack the surface
