I decided on the MacBook Pro (Retina). Should I get base model or...

i have the base model, i use mine to produce music so 8gb is sufficient. also 128gb is a bit tight but if u can get away with an external hd you're gravy

I bought a maxed MB Pro Unibody back in fall of 2008 and it still runs okay. 4GBs of RAM is a bit low right now and it does cause me issues at times. I could upgrade it to the 6GBs that is the max amount that the chipset handles, but at this point there isn't a point I feel.

I do need a new one, but I'm waiting for next years Intel chips to go live before I do that (not the ones revealed last week, but the generation after that). I also want Apple to offer 32 GBs of RAM before I make the plunge
What would you ever need 32gb of RAM for lol.

Would probably need to max out your toolbar before you ever came close to using that much.

Been groovy on my i5-4430 with 8gb. Not going to lie, have thought about stepping my game up to 16gb though.

I couldn't find an official Macbook thread and didn't want to make a thread so hopefully I can get some answers here:

I just got the 13in with Retina mid 2014. Processor 2.6GHz with i5. 8GB 1600.

I'm new to the Apple world. Can someone recommend some must have apps?

Anyone use Bitdefender?

Hiddenapp?

If you aren't going to upgrade for a long time(until it breaks or something), I'd get the works. You don't want to be heading into 2020 with 8 gigs of ram.

128 gigs is definitely not enough storage though either way. Unless you like carrying external hard drives around, I'd definitely recommend more than that.

Yeah since the memory and RAM can't be upgraded with these new MBP's you need to buy the most maxed out MBP you can afford.

My next MBP will be an i7,1TB, and 16gb RAM I need it to last.

I bought the one with the 128gb cause I didnt plan on loading it up with music cause of my external. I'll probably regret it later but idk since I didnt play much music on my last laptop.

You dont need antivirus with macs

8Gb is plenty. Macs treat 8gb like its 16gb.

Search google to mac apps, all depend on your needs

Mines is 4GB memory, i run editing software and vmfusion windows 7 and multiple windows at the same time with ease!

- CrashPlan for OTA backups

- EverNote if you take a lot of notes.

- Memory Clean is kind of cool too, it cleans up your memory cache with one click.

- LiteIcon if you want to eventually customize your dock and change the stock icons

- Popcorn Time

NT need y'all help. Got guy willing to sell his macbook air mid 2011 model  for $175 with a cracked screen should I hop on it?

NT help me out - my girl wants to do Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design and I'm going to pick her up a laptop before I head out of the US (more expensive abroad). The Macbook Pro seems the right choice. It's mind boggling all the different options though. This will be the first Apple product I've ever bought so have no idea what I need. There seem to be similar configs with multiple years of production (e.g., 2010, 2011, etc).

Could someone tell me what the best I could get for around $800 would be? I have no idea how the pricing works on Macbooks and it's varied all over the web when I look around.

Also, any good places to buy a used Macbook Pro? I semi don't want to deal with Craigslist because I don't know anything about Apple stuff.

From reading online about what specs I need (i7, SSD, 8GB+ ram)

These both are retina display I assume...

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/sys/5190037550.html

Which one of those would be better? What should I check/ask on email?

For the Adobe suite you're going to want at least 8gigs of memory and you're not going to find any used unibody mac with that much RAM for under $800.  However if you stretch your budget to around $1000 there are some great Macbook options for your girl.

For 800 I think you'd be happy with a refurbished high end pc line.  I speak from personal experience that the Dell XPS line are great looking durable laptops.  Dells get poo poo'd around here but at that price point they are going to run circles around any Mac in performance and features.

Here's one for $800 with the i7, ssd, and 8 gigs of memory:

Amazon product ASIN B00YZ65TY2

That said if you/your girl are dead set on a Mac than nothing else will really satisfy you.  They are indeed great machines, but keep in mind that you'll either have to compromise in specs, increase your price range, or wait around and hope for an unusally good craigslist deal on a device that more than likely got abused by it's previous owner.

I don't use storage much and it's the easiest to find a solution for - my main target was RAM. I wanted 16 GB for sure. Right now I'm on an i7/16/128 and I love it.

13 inch MBP Retina i7/16gb/dual core ($1,850) or 15 inch MBP retina i7/16gb/quad core ($1,740)

They're this years latest models. Both with 256gb ssd.

I prefer the size of the 13 and feel like 15 is overkill when it comes to screen size.

But 15 inch is slightly cheaper and a quad core :/

Thoughts? Thanks in advance

Got my girl the 13 in rmbp 256gb 2 months ago
And it's like perfect
Maybe more than she needs
After taxes a lil above 1500
It was on sale at Best Buy for 1350
It runs good
Again she only looks at YouTube and does web browsing
But I think it's perfect spec wise for her needs

I'm actually planning on selling my MBP mid 2012, mainly because I don't need a pro because I don't do much.  The only thing I hate about it is the convince of carrying it.

I'm planning on buying the new Mac 12 inch that just came out, space gray.  Literally does everything I need.  Made a dumb decision and went with a pro.  But man is it hard to sell a Mac.

If I was you I would hold out because if I'm not mistaken the MacBook Pro is due for a major update this year.
