Y'all have joint custody but who is the custodial parent? You laughing now until she really does see a tax professional and they tell her to file a case against you

You might as well fess up bruh...especially if she's the custodial parent which is usually the woman in 95% of the cases

She thirsty for that money so she gonna come after your neck. I let my girl claim my daughter....i don't even have time for that drama cause it ain't that serious.

Did my taxes on the 23rd and got this email from Turbotax on the 24th for both my fed and NYS. On the Turbotax website it says expect return between Feb. 3 - Feb. 15. My only issue is that on the IRS website refund tool I only have one bar highlighted that says accepted and it doesn't give me a timeframe. I did my girls taxes also on the 24th and she chose to get hers deposited on a Net10 prepaid card which I thought would take her a little longer to receive. Ironically she has the same status on the IRS refund tool as I do but she received a email yesterday from Net10 stating that her card is in the mail and is loaded with her federal return already and should arrive early next week. Is this normal with the IRS refund tool and turbotax displaying different information and when can I realistically expect my return ?

The irs website says my refund is still being processed, and the transcript website is giving regristration error. Irs playin with ya boys taxes smh

It's all about the custody agreement. That's all that's gonna matter so you can file first or on the last day.

what method was used to file her taxes? was the "prepaid net 10 card" considered a "Refund Anticipation Loan"?

If the net10 option was a RAL, the company that is sending the card is essentially giving her their own money, and they will wait and keep the money the IRS sends for her: that's why they're able to "give" the refund sooner; they don't actually wait for the IRS to send the real refund, because they use their own money to send the pre-paid card to your girl.

there is only one right answer. either you were legally allowed to claim the child or you were not.
either the baby mom was legally allowed to claim the child or the baby mom was not. I am not familiar with a situation that would allow "both" of you to receive the dependent credit on each of your tax forms when it is based on the same one individual.

per freakonomics, back before the IRS requested SSN info for the dependent, there were about 7,000,000 more dependents being claimed. when the IRS rule changed to require people to specify "which" dependent they were claiming, people all of the sudden didn't claim as many dependents. about 10% less!

please don't commit fraud, and please don't use ignorance of the law as an excuse to break it. please refer to this irs website if you need assistance determining the validity of being able to claim a dependent: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Who-Can-I-Claim-as-a-Dependent?

Yup! this is usually a big part of the determination, but i recommend reviewing all of the information for each situation. this is also why separation and custody disputes can have such a financial impact. the tax incentives can be worth thousands of dollars over the course of a minor child's first 18 years.

Also, i would like to remind everybody about the following vocabulary:

Refund = the money you expect to receive back after filing your tax forms.
Return = the tax forms that you fill out and submit

Laziness
Just didn't feel like doing it myself
I'll get it the day after
The bank they use I can usually call and check the account it's always ur ssn
They been good to me at least sending it the next day

i'd like to ask you how much you paid for the service you received. curious, especially based on what we've messaged perviously, and your participation in this and previous threads.

didnt even start my taxes... but my moms gets it done for me from her accountant he charges way too much but he does lie a lot so i guess its an even trade... but im just going to deposit the money like i do every year

you know a tax preparer lies when completing your taxes? why is that acceptable to you?

i am legally allowed to claim my son, i wanna know if even tho i claimed him and i tell my baby mom thst and she still decides shes gonna claim him too, after i already got my money, will the IRS just audit her taxes or will they come after me and audit me too?

if you are legally allowed to claim an individual as a dependent, and you do, but then somebody else also claims that individual as a dependent (even if they don't have the legal basis to do so) it is likely that you both will be audited.

There are a lot of factors that go into this situation, so it is not possible to say with certainty what YOU can expect. i would encourage you to keep all documentation that verifies your position that you are legally allowed to claim the dependent. if asked to prove your circumstances, make it as easy as possible for yourself by having all of your information and proof organized and easy to access.

if you are correct and right, then it should be a minor inconvenience to provide the proof of those facts to someone (IRS) that asks for it.

Did my taxes early yesterday through TurboTax. Got the "accepted" message a few hours later. Where's My Refund is showing one bar. TurboTax timeframe is giving me a 21 day window. (Jan 31-Feb 20)

I don't expect to get my refund any time soon but hopefully they are on time this year.
