Anyone picking up the Apple Watch?

I love driving with the watch. Using maps as navigation on the watch is :pimp:. I was driving for uber for a 4 hours and using the watch made it extremely easy to navigate
I am training for a marathon and run 5times a week, 25+miles a week, so the heart rate monitor is pretty cool to have. When I go hard I can see my average being 200+, then less than 185 when I'm not. But I don't take advantage of it. I still have my phone with me while running, but i always put a run workout on the watch just to glance and see how far I've gotten while running, also cool I guess. Seeing texts is extremely convenient, just glancing real quick to see what was said, like at work and not being seen as looking at my phone. It's cool and makes thing a little bit easier, but the watch is by no means a necessary thing to have. Just something to buy if you have the money and don't care. I don't think it was ever meant to be something revolutionary, and people aren't getting that. It's just a watch, after all

It's not on this watch because they can put it on the next one so you'll have to upgrade. Just like the first gen iPad. Apple's strategy is to just give you enough to be satisfied, but not enough that you're completely satisfied. They've always had a "tick-tock" method to mobile devices. Every other generation is a major upgrade. The same will probably be true with the watches. First gen Apple hardware is hardly desirable when you look back at the evolution.
I get that but in 2015 to leave out a camera? Cmon man. It's one thing to make spec upgrades but when the next one releases with a camera the first gen will literally be obsolete. To my understanding spoke still makes a ton of money off of last gen items. Leaving out hardware isn't a good look.

That's just my theory at least. For all we know they may not plan to add a camera at all
Which is exactly why they wouldn't put it on the first gen. I heard sales are something like 90% off from when it was first released. Why not give people another reason to have to upgrade?

Yes, GPS & texting from your watch are EXTREMELY convenient! Hopefully it starts to catch on with the younger crowd while driving.

Voice to text sucks. I spend more time making sure it's correct that I might as well of typed it

Both of these make sense and I agree with. They leave me torn. The novelty of it has me intrigued definitely, but Id hate to drop $400 and then here comes Apple Watch2 in October. SMDH... Same ole story w/ Apple, on every product.

To be fair, I bought a Moto 360, which does a great job w/ text-to-speech. MUCH better and faster than even my phone.

Can't speak on the moto 360 but Siri on my apple watch is much better than on my phone. Not sure how that's possible but it is; it's been dead on 90% of the time. The 10% it was off was with background noise.

just went to apple to check them out.

surprisingly i think i like the sport better.

the black is nice because i feel like the silver sport finish looks kind of cheap and the non sport looks like its going to scratch a bunch. the demos in the drawer already had a bunch of tiny scratches on it.

they had the space black on display which is originally what i was looking to get but in person its def more of a grey than a black it looks in the pictures. and it didnt wow me so i cant justify the 1100 price point.

but the biggest reason i like the sport better is the weight. i put on the black sport with the black sport rubber band and i swear you cant even feel it on your wrist.

i also tried on the non sport with the milanese band and i love the band but it felt significantly heavier with the non sport watch attached.

im going to think it over but ultimately i can see myself going with the black sport and probably buying the milanese band to go with it.

figured id throw this in here because i dont remember anyone talking much about the feel rather than the functionality.

^^^^^^ did the almost exact same thing you did before deciding which one I wanted.

The weight of the higher end models didn't bug me as much as the price LOL. I own much heavier and larger watches so I guess I'm accustomed to a heavier time piece. Some folks on the internet also claim the sapphire crystal on the higher end model makes the screen less bright but I couldn't notice a difference.

yea the price is def the #1 deciding factor but honestly i think that even if they were all the same price i might actually still go with the sport.

the scratches would drive me crazy though the chrome finish does look very nice especially with the milanese band.

i just feel that for it being an apple watch and not a luxury time piece the weight should be minimal if that makes sense.

what did you end up going with?

Actually some higher end watches are pretty heavy. My Tag Heuer is one of my heavier watches due to the mechanical movement.

Scratches don't bug me but I've heard from those who have the higher end model that it does scratch easily. So if that would drive you crazy either buy a case or go with the sport.

I bought the black/space grey sport.

Had mine since Launch Day.  The biggest things I've gotten from mine so far is having such quick access to information without puling out my phone and the Health & Fitness features which I use everyday working out.  It's definitely worth it and I'm glad I got it.  watchOS 2 will be a huge upgrade though because Apple opens up the API and lets developers create native apps for the watch.  Right now the apps that run on the watch still need a native app on the phone in order to run and can't use all the features of the watch yet.  I see it similar to the transition from the first iPhone to the next year when iOS 2 added the App Store for developers to build their own apps.

honestly everyone that is on the fence should just wait until os2.. that will make it or break it for you.

Anticipated date?
Fall. My guess would either be on or a week or so after ios9 drops.

i actually came in here to mention i went ahead and bought one.

i was torn between the sport in black or the regular one. i ended up going with the regular one because although both models let you interchange the bands, anything other than the rubber sport band on the sport watch doesnt look right. the sport black is nice and much lighter, i think personally, but the stainless steel finish coupled with some bands out the make the apple watch look really good.

as far as functionality, im going to tell you what i told everyone else...

if you buy the watch for what it is and what it offers and dont expect more than what it does right now youll be happy. if youre a tech geek or even like cool new things youre really not gonna go wrong with an apple watch. its an attention grabber definitely and the ability to change the bands so easily, for me , makes it always a fresh product for me.

my main use for it and what i like about it, is that i get messages alerts. my phones always on silent without vibrate because of group chats and because of that i miss calls and more important texts until i look at my phone. now i dont miss anything and dont have anything vibrating or going off in my pocket. you can set your alerts too like for me especially work emails. i set it to get those straight to the watch. even little things like when i was in my car id have my phone either on the seat or in the cup holder now it never leaves my pocket and i dont check my phone constantly.

you can answer calls through it. a phone call is cool but its def geeky and awkward. siri works extremely well surprisingly.

as far as apps, my hand is broken so i cant really work out so the fitness app doesnt apply to me now. other apps take a little while to load but not as long as i originally thought they would, maybe 3-5 seconds. i actually find myself using shazam alot because its really so easy.

all in all its definitely not something you need. but if you take in other peoples reviews of it and apply it to how it might or might not fit YOUR lifestyle then the decision wont be wrong. like i said my main purpose for buying it was because i heard it did notification very well and it did. it was something that could make my life more convenient, not something i NEEDED. plus i thought it looked cool and iim a suker for new products especially gadgets, so i bought it. it kind of reminds me of the first iphone. i didnt need the iphone, it was foreign to the whole world. but i liked what it did and i like gadgets so i bought it. i dont know/think the watch will ever be what the iphone is, but who knows right now. with integrations like apple pay which is honestly pretty cool and convenient coupled with how it makes little things easier i see no reason why it cant grow into something better.

@amarano  Great review. Definitely got me more interested in it, but I'll be waiting for the Fall to see what OS2 offers. Or can I buy now and upgrade to OS2? Will they be releasing new models with OS2?

Also, do they only sync to iPhones?

Edit: Answered all my own questions with a  google search.

yea man its works as an extension of your iphone. it wont really work by itself. so you need an iphone.

os2 will be releasing in the fall, probably with ios9. i would assume end of september. i dont know all the new features in os2 off hand but you can easily look it up to see what will be offered. and you can buy an apple watch today and it will be using os1.0.1 and when os2 comes out, you can update the software.

software updates and a majority of settings are all done through the apple watch app on your iphone.

as far as new models of the watch go, i would assume a new one probably apple watch 2 would come out next year, although me personally would strongly disagree with an annual watch release. i feel as though they wont sell year to year like phones do. not everyone will want to buy a new watch every year. kind of like an ipad, i dont know anyone who buys every ipad whereas many people buy every iphone.

amarano amarano Excellent review. Sounds like you and I are alike with being more intrigued with the novelty of the watch, versus expecting it to save the world. I travel a lot for work, so having my boarding pass right on my wrist seems like a good thing to have. I too keep my phone on silent/no vibrate 100% of the time. Miss countless calls and texts because of it. Also, this might allow me to get in the wife's good graces. She always upset with the amount of time I spend "checking" my phone. Maybe having the watch will alleviate the need to constantly check my phone, as I can quickly see alerts via the watch and pick and choose what I will respond to in that instances.

I still keep going back to my biggest annoyance with the watch, I just dont want a new model to release on my in 3-6 months and I feel like im screwed. I guess the only saving grace is that Apple products seem to retain their value, so reselling on the black market in order to upgrade to the new model should not be a challenge.

I've also heard new hardware could be pushed for this Holiday season as Apple may be in a haste to get things right.

Either way, I have 8 months remaining on my ATT Next plan. I can buy out and trade in my current phone, get an iPhone, and buy the watch if it were that serious, but thinking about after the novelty wears off it probably won't be worth it to me. I'll wait to see what software/hardware is announced in the coming months before going any further.

i just used apple pay on the watch at a duane reade and although it could end up being just a novelty...

it was extremely cool

.

it took less than 5 seconds from when the cashier rang me up to when i was headed out the door. it works that well.
