That's if you sign in FA.

But if you are traded, and the trading team had Bird Rights, they are given to the new team.

So the Bird Rights he had with the Wolves were transferred to the Cavs.

Ahh gotcha I see.  This sounds dumb, but if Lebron waits it out like he is planning on doing to see what Love does, is there any situation where the Cavs don't have the caps space to re-sign him since they wouldn't have bird rights?  I know its a pipe dream.

They'd have to rescind the cap hold on him.. They won't do that.

Yeah I miss and remember those days also.

It was nuts and Laker fans camped out for tickets in Summer 96 when we got Kobe.

Same thing also when we got Andrew Bynum.

But yeah I remember when me and a friend went to the Long Beach pyramid during Bynum's rookie summer and as I was walking in Mitch Kupchak was walking right besides me into the arena.

So true. In 2001 I stood in line at 3 am at Niketown Newport Beach, bought the black cement IIIs, then went to Long Beach right after and saw Magic Jonhson drop a triple double on the lakers summer league team at age 42

If Bulls offer him a max deal. All other teams have to offer at least 3 years.

So Butler's only play is accept the one year QO. And become a UFA in 2016.

he has to take the risk of the qualifying offer and play 1 more year. then becomes an unrestricted FA next summer.

edit. essential beat me to it.

did the jemele hill and kobe bryant genius talk from yesterday ever make it online?

I think everyone wants to be unrestricted next year. Gonna be ridiculous money for everybody.

UFA and a capless offseason would be awesome tbh

EVERYONE would join us

do it Silver

Well we'll see how much truth there is to this rumor when Butler signs with the Bulls. If it's the 1 year / $4.43mil, he's out the door. If he signs a 3 year deal it was all smoke.

But for reference,

25% max in 2016 = $22,250,000
30% max in 2016 = $26,700,000

A total of $48,950,000

Nick Young, Julius Randle (Team Option), Ryan Kelly (QO), Jordan Clarkson (QO), Tarik Black (QO), Jabari Brown (QO), D'Angelo Russell, Larry Nance Jr, Anthony Brown, Robert Upshaw & LaMarcus Aldridge is 11 players with $45,143,810mil in cap space.

at a projected salary cap of 89 million in 2016, the lakers would need to shed ~5 million in salary..

Don't even need to get rid of him. dropping Kelly's QO gets you to within $1.6mil

To play with Russell, Randle, Butler & Aldridge... I think KD would sacrifice $1.6mil, that he'd easily recoup in endorsements within 24 hours.

Wouldn't it be smarter for him to take the QO anyways. With the television money and cap raises he should just wait for a year.

We pick up LMA this off season. Then next offseason we hit hit everybody over the head and nab up Durant and Butler in the same offseason.

He just has to believe that he can get through the next season healthy. As E and I have been discussing, even if he were to be seriously injured his earning potential doesn't just fall to nothing. He'd still earn good money.

But you left out Kobe's next contract extension.

For those who say he can't afford to risk the money.

Brandon Roy signed a 2 year $10.4mil deal in 2012. Hard to think there's much risk for Butler if he gets injured.

I use Brandon Roy as the prime example of Jimmy Butler may be risking money, but it certainly isn't $90mil.

Brandon Roy got $5.2mil a year for 2 years in 2012. That's after injuries every season. Told his knees would never get better.

And he sat out the entire 2011-12 season.

He was 28 years old when he got the deal.

The cap was $58mil. Next year the cap is projected to be $89mil, the year after it is $109mil.

For a guy who will be 27, even if he has a bad injury the year before, he'll easily get $10mil a season.

Hell if Wes Matthews cracks $8mil a year this offseason, Jimmy Butler will get way more than that.

Also I forgot. If Jimmy gets another all star selection, he's a 30% max player.

But you left out Kobe's next contract extension.

They are not going to give him one. He's done after this season.

And Lakers have done, and have proven to do very little to appease Kobe outside of his contract. And the contract was more a marketing tool than anything. See Miami haggling over Wade's contract, that's a bad look to players. See the Lakers, who take care of their main staples.... That's attractive to a player.

I honestly think that was a big part of it. It was stupid, but I think it had something to do with why they did it.

And even if he wanted to be back, it would be for a room exception. Lakers more than took care of him already.
