Lebron offering 4 year scholarships to 1,100 students at the University of Akron. ($9,500 per yr)
The NBA star has partnered with the University of Akron to provide a guaranteed four-year scholarship to the school for students in James' ''I Promise'' program who qualify. The scholarship will cover tuition and the university's general service fee - currently $9,500 per year. [...]

''It's the reason I do what I do,'' said James, who announced the program Thursday while hosting an event for students at Cedar Point Amusement Park. ''These students have big dreams, and I'm happy to do everything I can to help them get there. They're going to have to earn it, but I'm excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures.''

The school and the LeBron James Family Foundation are still finalizing the criteria for the scholarships. The students will have to graduate high school within Akron's public school system and achieve standard testing requirements as well as fulfill a community service obligation. [...]

''It means so much because, as a kid growing up in the inner city and a lot of African-American kids, you don't really think past high school,'' said James, who bypassed college to jump to the NBA. ''You don't really know your future. You hear high school all the time, and you graduate high school and then you never think past that because either it's not possible or your family's not financially stable to even be able to support a kid going to college.'' [...]

The university is renaming its education department the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education. The first class eligible for the scholarships will graduate in 2021.
@HayleyByrnes 1100 kids x $9500 x 4 years = $41.8million #math
very cool by bron. gets a lot of hate, but doing something that i don't see many athletes do, especially that type of money.
good for him but the wording seems misleading

offering 4 year scholarships to 1,100 students =/= offering 1,100 4 year scholarships to students

if i go to a school of 2,000 students and offer two scholarships then I am "offering 4 year scholarships to 2,000 students"

charities use this wording all the time to make it seem like they are doing way more than they actually are

Ice Cube roasting Dwight Howard on Highly Questionable "I'm kinda glad he isn't here anymore so I don't have to sit and scream from the rafters about how he's playing"

Lol

The link I read is saying he's offering it to 1,100 students not just offering one or two scholarships to a population of 2,000 students.

If the treatment worked then who cares?

then midas whale shoot em up with shoulder growing hormones. maybe lebrons six toes can be a new norm. its controversial for plenty of reasons. there could be long term side effects that we have yet to know.

that's my point though, he is not going to hand out 1,100 students

1,100 students have an chance at getting a scholarship

out of the 1,100 students only those who pass the criteria will get the scholarship

out of those who qualify, only those that choose to go to the specific university get the scholarship

so from 1,100 students you can easily go down to 150 students that actually get scholarships

still a great thing on lebrons part but there's no need to over hype it with misleading headlines.

its like saying a player who shoots 20 shots in a game has a chance at scoring 60 points

no one cares about lebron giving out scholarships. jeez. come on.

plenty of nba dudes give back. lebrons pr game catching up. no one talks bout kobes foundation, or gasol visiting children hospital and all that. but people will. glorify lebron like he some statue erecting candidate.

Ooooh okay, I see what you saying. I was thinking initially they were saying everyone of those 1,100 kids in his program would get it but yeah, they actually have to pass a certain criteria and choose to go to the University of Akron.
