NT's All Time NBA ReDraft Thread: GR8 Write Up Page 187, Bracket Final Vote

Starting with the 11th pick, my initial prognosis had me lookin in the Hakeem Olajuwon range in terms of who would be available. Little did I know…… 
I went with Bird, merely on the “Top 5” All Time general label he has. But in reality, I was debating pretty heavy between him and David Robinson and that very nice 26 PER he spots. I decided to go with Bird figuring he could swing between the 3-4 based on my needs, and gave me one of the best shooters of all time, a Finals MVP, and a multiple time champion as the unquestioned leader. (things David could not give me) Bird’s 23.50 PER isn’t terrible, either.
From the moment this draft was conceived, I had my targets set on Prime Ray Allen. Pairing him with Bird just made it that much nicer. But all along, I was going to pursue Ray, I just didn’t expect to have to do it in round 2. But with the way the board was moving, I didn’t want to risk losing him on the flip back to me.
From there I wanted/need to anchor my front line, both offensively and defensively. Zo is that guy. Sports a healthy PER, and tho he never had NBA Finals success as the main guy, he wouldn’t need to “carry” this team, with Bird and Ray in pocket. I had targeted Webber for this spot initially, but Allen sniped me. I had to adjust quick after that.
Adding Billups round 4 was merely yet another clutch shooting Finals MVP, who really had a solid 3 year peak from his 04-06 days in Detroit. I strongly considered Gilbert Arenas here for an even more deadly shooting touch, but in terms of fit, Gil wasn’t gonna be setting up Ray or Larry on breaks/pick and pops. Billups would do that. He spent years setting up Rip, he def could set up Ray. So I chose Billups over Gil, also adding a little more defense to the equation. I had wanted Sheed for this round originally, but Mike stole him. Sheed would have slotted so well with the way my team was setting up.
So to fill that PF slot, I went with a slightly lesser/steadier version of Sheed in LaMarcus. Not quite the same range, but still solid from 18-19 feet, decent defender, solid on the block, and like Zo, maybe not the postseason success my guards have had, but shown enough to know that with Bird/Ray/Billups leading the team, and Zo backing him, he’d be able to provide enough for me to know my offense and defense would not be reliant on any one man, but rather a full 5 man attack, both sides of the ball.
Iggy simply gives me another Finals MVP, and in the actual role he’d play here, 6th man. Imagine me swapping Iggy in for Bird late in games for defense. Billups, Iggy, Zo is a perfect blend of defenders everywhere, with Ray and LMA being my “lesser” defenders, and still very good in their own rights. Iggy also gives me some versatility, bein able to play anywhere from the 2 to the 4, and if I pulled Ray for him, he, Billups, and Bird could all run offense.
Round 7 was tough because I had Rondo lined up, Allen stole him, so I switched over to Steve Smith, but then Senor wanted him for his pick, so I let him pass just to not be a ****. So, I went with Daugherty, a legit 7 footer that gives me a little bit of a more offensive Center in place of the more defensive minded Zo. Daugherty in his prime was worth a 21/10/4/1 stat line, every night . And paired with Iguadala, a very nice start to my bench, which I can build around.
Yet again, I got sniped, hard. I wanted Robert Horry, an absolutely historical player in terms of NBA postseason as well as a versatile stretch 4, slash SF (from his Houston days) Senor went back to back robbing me, but that’s ok. Getting Danny Manning doesn’t get me the postseason glory, but he gets me the better overall player, and a guy that was NICE for a 2-3 year stretch to the tune of 21.5/6.5/3.5/1.5/1.5 per game with plus defense. Slotting him next to Iggy and Brad Daugherty? Gonna work out just fine.
Finally a target not stolen from me, the shooting I need on the second unit, Byron Scott, one of the best shooters of the 80’s and a starter on the Showtime Lakers. In 1987-88 specifically he put up 22/4/4 with 2 steals on 53% and 35% from 3. That 35% was actually his low point for a 5 year stretch as he hit .43, .44, .40, and .42 percent the years sandwiched around the .35. It was also somehow his highest True Shooting percentage that year as he must have concentrated on his mid-range moreso than his long range. Dude could shoot, bottom line, and fits in well with my bench.
By this point, it was just about finishing strong, and getting as much talent on the end of my bench as I could. I finished off my second unit by getting a penetrating PG in Kenny Anderson, someone that could have thrived in this era of open spacing, pick and rolls, etc. At his peak, he could get you 18-19 points a night, with 8-9 dimes, a couple boards and a steal or two. He shot marginally enough, but I have enough spacing on my roster to blend around him. (and planned on adding some more spacers with my final two picks)
11th round, BPA at this point, and I was “kind of” wanting to add a creator on the wing as my second unit was a little more defense oriented and role specific. Rudy Gay gives me a little bit of a utility knife guy that can specialize on the offensive end. Couple of his years really stood out, 20/6/3/2/1 type games, on average, with 45-46% from the floor, and roughly 36-37% from 3? I’ll gladly take that, 11th round. He gives me a guy that can play anywhere from 2-4 in a pinch, 6-8, athletic, can run the break, finish at the rim, or create his own shot when needed. Love getting him this late.
For my final pick, I had two guys specifically in mind, I was gonna be happy with either one for different reasons. Chandler Parsons for my “young” guy with an ability to play the 3/4, give me another excellent range shooter, solid passer, and a guy that could learn to pattern his role much like Bird. But I was lucky enough the other guy fell to me as well, and I went with SG/PG Nate McMillan. Nate gives me yet another lock down defender, and ups my SG position for situational defense. Byron and Ray are capable, but not lock down, Nate is. So when I absolutely need a stop, I can go Billups/Nate/Iggy/Manning/Zo 5 strong individual and team defenders. Nate also gives me an insurance PG, sort of like LMA does for me at C. Gives me depth, even where I look a little thin.

For my team, I was hoping to achieve balance and not have too many one-dimensional players.. wanting guys who could do multiple things on both sides of the ball. I had a few guys I was debating between and my team would look much different if I wasn't sniped or had gone a different route.
Round 1: I was deciding between Duncan and Bird at the 10 spot. I think I just wanted to sure up my big man and the thought of getting a dominant two-way big man who can score, anchor my defense, has won MVPs and championships, and to be honest at 10, was a steal.
Round 2: I wanted my PG. It was down to Frazier, Russ, and a couple other guys. This is one I debated a lot.. Walt would have given me the leadership, defense, and one of the best PGs of all-time. I went with Russ because I wanted his intensity, passion, and his talent is insane. In this fantasy scenario, I imagine his more wild antics would be calmed down by a guy like Duncan and the right team around him. His defense is sketchy at times as he gambles too much, but I wanted Russ and went for him.
Round 3: I was still kind of thinking about career longevity over looking at just a few peak years, in retrospect I might have switched this pick up and went a different route.. ESPECIALLY since a guy like Carmelo lasted until round 4. But still, Pierce gives me an all-time, HOF forward, and especially can hit 3's. I wanted to make sure I had a guy I liked in each of the spots, ball handler, big man, and outside scoring.
Round 4: This is where I had a few guys I really wanted, but had to play the guessing game if they would last. I was thinking between Amar'e, Serge, and Kevin Love. I figured some of them might have lasted til the next round. I debated strongly to go with Serge since he can hit a 3, defend at a high level, but I went with Amar'e instead. Prime Amar'e gives me a dominant offensive big man who can run the floor, kill it in the pick and roll, and provide some helpside defense alongside Duncan.
Round 5: Here is where I should have gone with Serge. I thought maybe he'd stick around. If not, maybe Kevin Love would still be there. Nope. I think I also wanted to sure up my starting 5 and I had more big men I liked than guards at the moment. So I went with Eddie Jones. 3's, defense, and a good companion to Russel in the backcourt.
Round 6: I wanted to be able to put Duncan back at the 4 spot in certain lineups and not make him carry the weight defensively. I missed out on a lot of elite defensive big men, so I did some more digging and was surprised to see Eaton still around. Lead the league in multiple years in defensive box plus minus and blocks per game and he's 7'4". So I have the option to go BIG with Duncan and Eaton, good luck scoring inside there, and I have the option to let Amar'e slide in and move Duncan over if I want more offense.
Round 7: I wanted more defense and versatility. If I want to have Duncan at C but still need the defense at the PF spot, Amar'e wouldn't cut it. So I went with Draymond. He's not an elite 3 point shooter, but he can hit them and most importantly, he's a competitive, hungry, multi-positional defensive guy. Put him at the 3 or the 4 depending on the lineup.
Round 8: Derek Harper gives me a solid backup PG. I had a few guys I was deciding between in this range.. Harper, Anderson, Pressey, etc. Harper gives me assists, steals, can hit the 3, just a solid PG in the backup spot.
Round 9: After missing out on a few guys I wanted, it's time to stop messing around and get my stretch 4. Ideally, I would have gotten a two-way 4 who can hit 3's, but those are very rare. Anderson stretches the floor, hits 3's, and that's what I wanted in this spot.
Round 10: Another 3-point shooter. Barros is a monster shooter and a career 41% shooter, and his best season he hit 2.4 a game on 46% shooting. I'll take it.
Round 11: Michael Ray Richardson. Another back-up guard, assists and steals, plus he played for the Knicks.
Round 12: George Johnson. Lead the league in blocks a couple seasons and DBPM a few times as well.
A couple regrets here and there, but overall I like my team. Not getting Serge is one of them, not getting Paul Pressey is another since I ended up with some decent guards and could have used another SF. But I figure I could slide Jones over to the 3 spot and Draymond can work there defensively too so that's not a big deal. A big 3 of Westbrook-Pierce-Duncan, with Jones hitting 3's and defense and Eaton controlling the paint. A small-ball line-up with Draymond and Anderson hitting 3's. Slide Duncan down to the 5 and you get a ton of options at the 4 spot with Draymond/Anderson/Amar'e.
Starting line-up gives me a good balance of shooting, defense, 3's, inside scoring, inside defense. Moving Duncan to the 5 gives me the most versatility as I can bring in Dray to play D and hit a 3, Anderson to stretch the floor and open things up, and Amar'e to dominant on the pick and roll.
