Have to say this was definitely one of the more fun experiences I've had on NT. I really appreciate each and every one of you for the unique talents you bring to the table. The trolling by certain individuals during this process was top notch from the showing up to post and pick 2 hrs later, to the e-beef between OKB and LTB, JRS's big board, just grade A stuff. It was very interesting seeing the different strategies employed by people and the constant stealing of picks.
As for the squad I put together, I'm pleased for the most part although seeing how the draft played out I probably would have made a couple picks differently.
PG-Deron Williams, Gilbert Arenas
SG-Kobe Bryant, Bradley Beal, Tony Allen
SF-James Worthy, Tobias Harris
PF-Al Horford, Karl-Anthony Towns, Rick Mahorn
C-Demarcus Cousins, Tyson Chandler
My starting lineup is pretty offensively tilted although KAT could easily take Al's spot with a couple good seasons and I'd be very good defensively as well. Overall I think my bench is pretty well rounded with shooters, defenders and just all around gritty guys who will do the dirty work.
Kobe-having the 5th overall pick was a gift and a curse, I knew pretty much I was taking a Laker 1st and assuming MJ goes #1 that would likely leave at least two of (Kobe, Magic and Shaq) available at 5, but when Hakeem went 1 and Bron went 4 I had all of them available. This was the only pick where I did the longevity tiebreaker although I know most were choosing on peak performance. Kobe's 06 season is probably one of the top 5 by a wing player in league history and he was literally unstoppable on the offensive end that year as evidenced by the 62 in 3 qts and the 81 point game against the Raptors. It was very tough to take him over Magic but at the end of the day I figured I could get a pretty decent point guard later on.
James Worthy-Big Game James, very versatile player that came up clutch time after time one a team laden with two other guys who are probably the best at their positions all time in Magic and Kareem. His Game 7 36 pt/16 rb/10 ast game in the 88 Finals is the stuff of legend and with he and Kobe out there at the end of close games I'll take my chances against anybody.
DeMarcus Cousins-Can't believe I passed over the great Elton Brand for this bum, but Boogie's just starting to realize how dominant he can be as a player and is rounding out his game to being a total dominant force in the paint. Putting up 24/13/4/2 is rare and despite his dynamic and unpredictable personality if Kobe could co-exist with Shaq on the court, I'm sure DMC could work as well
Gilbert Arenas-this is the one pick that I kinda reached for although, Hibachi's 06 season was amazing as well. In retrospect probably should have taken LMA/Paul George with this pick to give even more potency to the starters but having Gil as the 6th man is pretty darn good.
Deron Williams-Dude at one point was the best PG in the league over the doughboy, and is a maestro in pick and roll situations and I have some of the better pop and roll guys in the league for him to go to work with. Another enigmatic personality as well so I probably have to get Phil or Riles to manage this entire group or it could go straight to hell quick, but the offensive capabilities with prime D-Will being the trigger man are enticing.
Bench:
Tyson-probably the best defensive big left on the board at that point and being that my squad lacked defensive prowess in the front court, although DMC is a solid defender this was a no brainer.
Al Horford-Needed a big who wouldn't clog up the paint next to DMC and Horford is that dude, pretty decent defender as well.
Tony Allen and Rick Mahorn were picks based soley on toughness, grit and making the opponents uncomfortable and should be able to hold opposing teams down until the offense gets back in the game.
Real Deal Beal and Tobias are excellent young pieces who bring a lot to the table all around and were good value picks in my opinion for where I got them in round 9 and 12 respecitvely.
The wildcard in everything and what could take this from being a pretty good squad to an unstoppable one is the #1 pick in this past draft in KAT. I believe dude is going to be an all timer, he has all the tools and seems to have a limitless potential both offensively and defensively, if he's the real deal slide him into my starting lineup with the rest of the guys, what can you realistically do that's a juggernaut.
