meet Terrence Wise, a 36 year old, 2nd-generation fast-food worker

Taxpayers. The government doesn't make money, it takes it.

clearly right?

but this guy thinks if you raise the minimum wage they'll turn the faucet off.

that these people will get an increase in pay and all of a sudden start paying their bills.

A single person making 16K before taxes is living where? Eating what? Qualifying for?

the figures posted earlier from that study done at MIT cited $23,000 to live, $20,000 after taxes in my area.

of that $20,000 required to live
$15,000 goes to Food, Housing, and Transportation

Housing for example was at $8,028 a year. thats over $660 a month.
whats not factored in is low income housing where people are paying less than $100 each month in rent.

theres a big difference in $1,200 a year in rent vs $8,000

transportation is another
who the **** is spending $4,600 a year riding the bus?
our maintaining a late model vehicle?

the food figure is off by close to 50%

if were going to look at the numbers you have to factor in everything

with all numbers factored you're looking at around $9,000 to live

Dude why do you keep mentioning these programs like everyone who makes minimum wage can be on these programs? Like everyone can live in subsidized housing?

A single person isn't qualifying for low income housing, they damn sure don't get priority even if they do. If you can't afford a car you're taking public transportation and that cost money. Stop acting like your breakdown is so clear cut and precise

Again did you even look at the statistics I provided? You really convinced yourself that it cost 9,000 to live somewhere?

It cost 9K to live, you think minimum wage should be $5 huh? You think minimum wage is too high?

What a interesting argument

Waiting list for assisted housing for a single person in Richmond VA (Henrico county) takes months, and that's just to be considered.

Years in PA, when they announce that the waiting list to get on the list is open, lines out the wazoo for people trying to fill no more than 10 slots.

it really is a slipery slope with you isnt it.

i didnt say it was too high

i never said it should be $5

do better
I'm sure you see question marks, I asked you questions I didn't say you said anything. If you believe it cost 9K to live in your city minimally for a single then the minimum wage there should be $5 and your city has poor budgeting. They're paying people more than what is required.

i dont believe anything, im just applying the numbers and doing the math they neglected to do.

its easy to list a bunch of numbers and say it costs X to live somewhere
but if you're going to talk about income you have to consider ALL income, subsidies, and breaks in order to get a full picture

thats what being unbiased is

we have entires subdivisions that are low income

apartment complexes

brand new stuff

projects too

not to mention familes that still live at home

you name it
and all we have is 'maybe' around 80,000 residents.

its dishonest to spit out a bunch of numbers thst claim these people are paying $660/mo in rent in a debate about income required to live

at the very least show both

because if we're talking a measly little $15,000 salary that $7,000 is big

In what state can you work a full time minimum wage job and qualify for food stamps?

Please share the income requirements,

http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/eligibility#Income

Net income has to be under 1,000 to get SNAP

minimum wage is $7.25

$7.25 x 160 hours = $1,160

the income limit for one person is $1,276
you didn't even answer the question :smh:

in what state? provide the state you live and how much are the income requirements in that state, don't act like its a one size fits all man

if by requirement you mean income limits, the link you provided is the same for every state except Alaska and Hawaii.

if by requirement you mean cost to live in my state, i already provided that a few posts back

also, if you use the income limit chart on the link you provided you may wanna stick to gross numbers
the worksheet for the Net works in my favor

If it was the same for every state then nobody in NY and Cali with minimum wage jobs would qualify for SNAP

... so nah you didn't even try to research that :smh:

The taxpayers are fronting the bill to support people because they don't make enough to survive. The burden should be more on the companies and less on the taxpayers.

It's a complex issue where simply raising minimum wage won't fix everything. However, improving education and wages is a start.

My lord,

The income requirements for public assistance is different for every state. If it was the same for every state then the states with the highest minimum wage rates would never qualify for public assistance which goes against your own "everybody who makes minimum wage qualifies for assistance"

My lord,

again, your income link provides this:

Income

Households have to meet income tests unless all members are receiving TANF, SSI, or in some places general assistance. Most households must meet both the gross and net income tests, but a household with an elderly person or a person who is receiving certain types of disability payments only has to meet the net income test. Households, except those noted, that have income over the amounts listed below cannot get SNAP benefits.

(Oct. 1, 2015 through Sept. 30, 2016)

Household Size

Gross monthly income / Net monthly income

1
$1,276 / $ 981

2
1,726 / 1,328

3
2,177 / 1,675

4
2,628 / 2,021

5
3,078 / 2,368

6
3,529 / 2,715

7
3,980 / 3,061

8
4,430 / 3,408

Each additional member
+451 / +347

Gross income means a household's total, non excluded income, before any deductions have been made. Net income means gross income minus allowable deductions.

* SNAP gross and net income limits are higher in Alaska and Hawaii.

i dont see a state by state breakdown.

you do? show me where.

bruh

i know what the **** you're asking
but i dont see it in the link YOU provided

so im asking YOU to walk me through finding it

you're asking me to walk you through finding how much minimum wage and how much public assistance requirements are for each state? oh .. nah but I'll show you for my state

a person who works minimum wage in my state earns $8.75

8.75 * 40 hours = $350

$350 * 4 weeks = $1,400

The monthly gross income limit to qualify for SNAP in NEW YORK is $1,275 (
http://www.nyc.gov/html/hra/downloads/pdf/services/snap/snap_need_to_know.pdf ), again no not anybody who works a full minimum wage job can not qualify for "assistance" like you alleged.

I'll ask one more time, can you share the states where full time minimum wage workers can qualify for assistance since your whole theory is "minimum wage + assistance". You have to know of at least one state unless you hypothesized that statement out of thin air

No idea where you guys are now, but on topic, while minimum is absolutely not liveable, and life has its variables, this man hasn't figured something out in 20 years. I don't like the idea of him being the face of this.
