A lot of close games yesterday, but I hope the Wizards continue their recent stretch of stepping up in the Playoffs and handling their business.
 
Wall with 32-14-4. Outstanding performance.

I'd chalk that up to Metro "Safe Track" and holiday traffic.  One assumes the seats were sold, at least. 

Has there been any talk of Gortat entering the concussion protocol after that knee to the head?  With Mahinmi down, we absolutely can't afford to lose Gortat.  Jason Smith isn't getting it done, to say the least.

Overall, you have to like much of what you saw in this game as a Wizards fan.  Wall was dominant, and played with the urgency and intensity you love to see from your squad's leader.  Beal struggled mightily in the first half (and from long range in general) and still found a way to get 22. 

Kieff was great.  He provided toughness and elevated his game in the playoffs.  I think he got into Millsap's head a little by the end. 

Yet the "much improved" bench was not looking very "improved" in the Playoffs.  Just look at the +/- for the second unit.  Bogdanavic was worthless.  His two makes were both layups, and he missed one of those, too.  The Wizards will really regret that trade if all it ultimately gave us was about 10 good games in the regular season. 

Oubre made some truly awful decisions (fouling a three point shooter), but balanced it out with some brilliant defensive plays as well.  That strip on Millsap while falling down in the fourth quarter was a critical play.  I'd like to see him check Schröder more in Game 2.  Kelly clearly bothered him during the brief stretch where he entered the game at 2 and was assigned the cross match.  We need to make life miserable on their ballhandlers to disrupt their extremely disciplined half court offense. 

I expect Atlanta to try and press their size advantage more and make the series increasingly physical in Game 2.  When the referees dominated this game in the latter part of the first half, the Hawks were in their element.  

Not to look past Atlanta, but it would also be nice if the Celtics series goes long to give Mahinmi a chance to recover.  We can't afford to play Smith heavy minutes in the playoffs, especially at the 5.

Morris wanted the rest of the league to take the Wizards seriously, so he came up with a nickname for the squad that John Wall and Bradley Beal were quick to embrace: Death Row D.C.

Morris even assigned nicknames to his teammates to match the superstar personalities of that legendary label, Death Row Records. Wall would be Tupac Shakur “because John is a little crazy,” Beal told The Vertical. Morris, a mild-mannered guy who could snap in an instant, would be Snoop Dogg. Beal would be Dr. Dre “because there is no Death Row without Dr. Dre,” Beal told The Vertical. Suge Knight? That would go to team security guard, David Best, a former college basketball player who sometimes sports a beard and a nearly shaved head.

Millsap is certified. No way you do what he has done in NCAA/NBA and be soft. He is just making a statement. Don't go overboard with the labels

Never said anything about what he's done before. But complaining about Gortat and Keef taking your soul -- Soft.

It bothers me that blatant lobbying of the officials, as Milsap clearly attempted after game 1, has proven such an effective strategy in the Playoffs.

The Hawks went to the line twice as often as the Wizards in game one, and Washington attacked more aggressively.  Tonight, the Wizards' top defensive players weren't allowed to play - at home, no less. 

This was a frustrating game to watch, but a satisfying one to win.  It shows resolve on the Wizards' part that they were able to push through and overcome the officiating, but let's be honest: there's a significant talent disparity in play here.  Should the Wizards be fortunate enough to make the ECF, this sort of officiating would likely prove insurmountable.  

I don't even need "star calls" to go the Wizards' way, despite having superior star power in this series.  I just want a level playing field.  But no, the ghost of Donaghy has the NBA so shook that they're willing to commit improprieties (Game 2) to counteract the perception of impropriety (Game 1).
