Panhandlers in Your City?

It's gotten out of control in Austin. Our office runner got punched in the neck from behind by some out-of-his-mind homeless guy last month. The guy was walking down the street punching ramdom people, and our boy caught one.

A ton of the homeless here are all jacked up on K2. SMH It's sad cause I can sympathize with their situations, but I've seen too many homeless people all messed up on drugs, committing crimes, or being bombarded for $ as I walk down the street.

About 3-4 years ago I was at Fareway (grocery store in Omaha). My dad let me wander off into the snack isle, and I get approached by this female. She asks me if I know where Lincoln is, and I start giving her directions on how to get there. She cuts me off, and is like "Listen...I know where it is, I just saw you and noticed you were the only one my age" (she was atleast 25, i was 11).
You're only 14-15?

I feel I can sympathize a touch. But in general, in my area we have these shelters/missions crop up and the homeless swarm like bugs to those areas. Other area businesses are suffering as no one wants to see 50-60 homeless all walk together from shelter to shelter. Most are day shelters. A healthcare clinic just opened up for them too. Same general area. As other businesses are trying to strive in the same area, it's tough to see the less fortunate never really rise above. They all walk like zombies from one handout to the next without hesitation. A buddies shop had to relocate recently as they were all cutting through his parking lot as they ventured from one area to the next.

I'm not saying we need to hide the harsh realities of life. But for those buisinesses that may be working on the fringe, shelters are not great business neighbors. Yet more and more crop up. The city needs to decide who's more important eventually. Shelters be like, 'we'll take care of you for 8 hours. The rest is on your own.' And then they scavenge the neighborhood like rats. They attract them to certain areas but aren't really helping.

Ive been to Vancouver a couple of times and over there they have a "designated" section of the downtown area for the homeless folks. They gotta be over there or they get arrested.

Any other cities that are like that? Im from Toronto and its not like that here. They are spread out, but obviously areas with shelters and soup kitchens theres a larger population.

Seen a dude on the side of the freeway a few months ago with a sign saying he had resumes with the sign covering half his face. THATS how you ask random people for a blessing. I swear if i had my own **** i would have at least offered him a p/t just off the strength of him not wanting a hand out but to grind to get it.

Cant even imagine how hard it was for him to swallow his pride and do that.

This is like a legit profession in nyc. Subways are lit. I kinda feel for em. 1 dude trying to rap, one trying to do dances and stunts, in my area i see them just sitting and asking ppl. Sometimes i give money, i hope its for good

I don't know any fancy homeless people in Houston. All the ones I've seen out on the street look like they've been there for years. The ones i really feel bad for are old ones with oxygen tanks and walkers. Sad they aren't linked to any family to help. I've given out money here and there.

There was this one time though i had been giving one panhandler change for awhile, then I was driving back to my house one day and saw that same homeless dude pull out some keys, unlock a door and go into a house

I stopped giving people money years ago...Ill gladly give you words of encouragement or guidance though

Some chick asked me for $5 on 42nd st and got mad when I dubbed her, let her tell me her whole little spiel too

Lady in Denver asked me for some money as I walked by then she proceeded to cuss me out and tell me to go back to Detroit. I still don't understand what happened.

The whole get mad when you dub them shtick doesn't really work, they should control their emotions while on the clock

I ordered a pizza once and was outside smoking a cigarette waiting for it and some lady was there and she kept talking to me asking for change i said sorry dont have any. I go back in and my pizzas done and as i come outside she goes "HEY! Gimme a slice!" i said give you? I dont have to give you ****. ***** spat at me :smh:

If she asked for a slice or said "hey look im hungry and dont have any money" id have given her a couple slices...shoot i might have even gave her half, but demanding? Nah

Would have called every ***** I know until I found one willing to go down there and stomp her out

 cant lie, thought about it but beating up a junkie isnt worth it. Plus lord knows what kinda disease or illness she had, and bleeds on me. If the spit had hit me... Then thats a different story

Oh I thought you meant **** spit on you, not in your direction

you have to be careful fighting the junkies, i know someone that started fighting a junkie in the Tenderloin in SF and he had junkie in a headlock but the junkies homeboy popped out and pepper sprayed him and next thing he knew he was being jumped by junkies

I'll come back in here later with more thoughts, but the most bizarre things I've ever seen in regard to panhandling took place in Houston. The strangest was a very large man that was sitting in a whataburger drive through, like 5 feet past the window where you pick up your food. The manager must not have known. I've lived in Houston, San antonio and now Austin and Houston was by far the worst. I've seen entire families sitting on the grass by a wall mart entrance. There was one lady in greenspoint that had these dogs that weren't on a leash, but followed her everywhere. Saw a dude with no arms with a bucket dangling from his shoulders. He would lean directly over the cars and perform this disturbing dance until they gave him some money.
I used to try to give freely, but the older I get the more hesitant I become. Why don't these people get on welfare?

I rarely see decent women (especially white women) panhandling anywhere. I always figured It's because SOMEONE would take them in, but I actually saw one the other day and was shocked. She knew her strengths, she even had on some biker shorts to accentuate the physique.

It's interesting how the general public doesn't really do anything to help until things are too late. Let's say a panhandler collapses and starts having a seizure, I'm sure a few people would get out of the car to help, maybe even call the police or get some food. But if you're just standing there chilling, it's like they are invisible.

The lady with the dogs are still there, I give her some change when I see her only for the dogs...the family is still in front of Walmart 45 lol they drink Starbucks, the husband looks perfectly healthy the wife does too and so do the kids lol

Damn son. Just imagine the impact that has on the children. What will they think.
Whenever I'm upset about something non related, I don't even consider giving anything. I'm like 'if I have to deal with bs like this to get money, no way in hell am I just giving away".

There's GOT to be a better way. Surely there can be subs type of shelter large enough to house and feed these people. Of course they don't want to be out there asking, and any decent person probably feels a bit uncomfortable seeing them out there. It's just not a good look all around. I'm sure people want to help, but people are struggling themselves lol. I'm willing to bet 100% that there's a homeless cat right now with more money than me.

I'll never forget when I gave a dude a few dollars and he faked it that he was going inside to jack in the box and instead went to the liquor store after he thought I was gone
