2013 New York Yankees season thread Vol. (85-77) OFFSEASON

Looks like the Yankees might go get Choo now. Do not want for the amount of money he's going to get

Rather just get Beltran + Infante. Kelly Johnson to platoon with maybe Mark Reynolds and we should go from there

Ellsbury
Jeet
Beltran
Tex
Sori
McCann
Johnson/Reynolds
Infante
Gardy

Not gonna lie, if any player was to get that 10-year contract it should be Cano, but at least it wasn't the Red Sox who got him. If Seattle can turn it around then good for them, but he's really just a way to get more ticket sales over there.

I've been able to talk myself down a bit... Look I get we should not have given him a 10year deal.. Just is disheartening seeing one of our own leave.. I feel like we should have tried to really offer him more $ over 7 years.

But that's over with..

1- Ellsbury - CF - L
2- Jeter - SS - R
3- ???? - ?? - ?
4- Soriano - LF - R
5 - Teixiera - 1B - S
6 - McCann - C - L
7- ???? - ?? - ?
8- ???? - ?? - ?
9- Gardner - RF - L

Time to make sense of all of this.

Without Cano, we have to replace DH, 2B, 3B.

No Cano means money opened up... Throw 3 year / $48mil at Beltran... That replaces Granderson..

So now we need a 3B & 2B.

We need two righty bats..

Save money and bring back Reynolds for 3B... Good pop and he'll hit 20HR, drive in about 70 at the bottom of the order. Keeps in line with trying to get us a lineup that has people you can't throw mistake pitches too.

Although you guys hate him, I really believe Brandon Phillips is the best replacement for Cano. No where near Cano. But a good clubhouse guy. Decent all around player.. We need someone who will keep everything together at second, and I don't care, Kelly Johnson is not a starting 2B

This would be your lineup
1 - Ellsbury
2- Jeter
3- Beltran
4- Soriano
5- Teixiera
6 - McCann
7- Phillips
8- Reynolds
9 - Gardner

Bench:
C - Cervelli or Romine
2B - Kelly Johnson
SS/3B - Brandon Ryan
OF - Ichiro

Pretty solid lineup... Biggest drop off that we expected was Cano.. Beltran could produce those numbers, but let's just keep it 1:1 comparison of Granderson... Phillips isn't a bad replacement for Cano.. And I don't want to hear no thanks on BP.. I want a world series in 2014.. Not wait until all of these contracts clear. His contract is not that bad...

SP:
C.C.
Kuroda
Nova
??
??

I want to say Pineda 4th, but I've been reading he will have to compete to get the 5th rotation spot.

We have no idea what to expect from Tanaka in terms of posting and bidding..

So we can't just sit around and wait and if we miss out on Tanaka we have another huge hole... Pineda will be the insurance guy.. Long Reliever/Spot Starter, and if we miss out on Tanaka, he can be the #5 starter.

We need to go after Garza. Bottom end of the rotation is a great spot for him. He isn't the ace, no pressure, just has to go out and pitch.. Not forced to be dominate.

Rotation:
C.C. - L
Kuroda - R
Nova - R
Garza - R
Tanaka - R

That's a solid 5 man rotation.

Now onto the bullpen.
Long RP - Pineda
RP- ??
RP- ??
RP - ??
Lefty Specialist- ??
SU- Robertson
Closer- ??

Have to resign Boone Logan.. Absolutely important
2RP - I like Preston Claiborne & Shawn Kelly.. Both started out great, but like the 2013 Yankees ran out of steam around July / August
RP - I love Dellin Betances if he could just learn to place his curve. The velocity of the fastball with the differential of the curve will make him dangerous if he figures it out.
Closer - I'm thinking outside the box here.. Francisco Rodriguez.... He'll be cheap.. He can still pitch.. Has pitched in NY.. Just somehow has a weird rap, which I will blame on the Mets. And Frankly, since it won't be Nathan, I can't see anyone else in Free Agency stepping up, and it will be stupid to move Robertson out of his spot as the best SU man in the league.. Rodney is too inconsistent, not sold on a pitcher named Balfour  (but honestly can't see him working in NY)

Final roster
C- Brian McCann
1B - Mark Teixiera
2B - Brandon Phillips
3B - Mark Reynolds
SS - Derek Jeter
LF - Brett Gardner
CF - Jacoby Ellsbury
RF - Alfonso Soriano
DH - Carlos Beltran

C - Francisco Cervelli
2B - Kelly Johnson
SS/3B - Brendan Ryan
OF - Ichiro Suzuki

SP1 - C.C. Sabathia
SP2- Hideki Kuroda
SP3 - Ivan Nova
SP4- Matt Garza
SP5 - Masahiro Tanaka

Long Reliever - Pineda
RP - Shawn Kelly
RP - Dellin Betances
RP - Preston Claiborne
Lefty Specialist - Boone Logan
SU - David Robertson
Closer - Francisco Rodriguez

Are the Yankees really gonna retire Paul O'Neil number 21 because McCann asked for that number & they said it's not available.

I like that the Yankees didn't budge on their Cano offer.

I think Yankees get Infante now.

We signed Kelly Johnson today.

The Yankees have agreed to sign infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson to a one-year deal in the $3 million range, pending physical, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports. The deal is pending a physical.

Now, onto the juicy stuff. Johnson has been signed to play either third base or second base:

- Third base if Alex Rodriguez opens the season suspended.

- Second base if Robinson Cano walks via free agency.

What if both happen? Well, the Yankees will have to find another option at one of the two spots. If somehow A-Rod avoid any type of suspension -- which, honestly, doesn't seem the least bit realistic -- and the Yankees retain Cano, Johnson will be thrust into a utility role.

Essentially, the smart money is on Johnson starting for the Yankees -- and my guess would be at third base.

Johnson, 31, hit .235/.305/.410 with 12 doubles, 16 homers and 52 RBI in 407 plate appearances in a utility role last season for the Rays. He saw time at second base, third base, first base and left field. He's a second baseman by trade, having played 809 of his career 960 games there.

@FeinsandNYDN 2h
Despite official announcement of Kelly Johnson signing, I don't expect him to be the final answer to the question "Who will replace Cano?"

GOD DAMNIT BRING MARK REYNOLDS, and have Johnson come off the bench...

For all those who don't want to read my entire post because you hate reading , here's priority list for me in terms of Free Agency

1. Carlos Beltran
2. Matt Garza (Not willing to wait for Tanaka... And all that waiting could mean nothing if we don't get him, and all the other SPs would have signed elsewhere by then)
3. Boone Logan
4. Masahiro Tanaka
5. Mark Reynolds
6. Francisco Rodriguez
7. Francisco Cervelli
8. Omar Infante (I'd much rather trade for Brandon Phillips. For you guys who want Kelly Johnson to start... Shame on you).

I do want Mark Reynolds on the team. Not sure why but he will be cheap and can hit.

I'm fine with overpaying Beltran instead of Choo.

I want Infante and a pitcher.

LET'S DO IT!!!!!

I don't hate BP.

He's actually one of my favorite players.  But the vast majority of his numbers have been trending in the wrong direction for several years; in 2013 he had 5 year lows in batting average, HRs, runs, SBs, K rate, swinging K rate, SLG%, ISO, BABIP, and batted ball distance among others.  The only stat he performed well in was RBIs and that was becase he had Choo and Votto setting the table for him while he hit cleanup all year.  His glove is more valuable than his bat at this point.

I'd like for them to sign Infante and Drew and then look into acquiring somebody like Porcello or--a longshot--Skaggs.

I'm working on numbers... Excel spreadsheet style... No ******g around haha...

From what it is looking like... 189 plan doesn't happen unless Yankees are willing to have HUGE holes in the roster..

I get it.. I just think his numbers would uptick.. But I get it.

I'm happy to see Cano gone. Too many years and too much money on that contract for a 30+ y/o. I hope they invest that money in more pitching, role players, and improving there damn farm system. Can't they spend some of that cash on some decent scouts like the Angels, Rangers, A's, Ray's have? Unless you have a young stud in your team, I don't see the point in 10 year contracts. Hopefully the MLB can reduce the contract length, just like how the NBA did, too many bad contracts out there.

We got Beltran 3/45 :smokin

Now get Infante and some pitching. I think this eliminates us from Choo :smokin :smokin

BOOOOOORRRRIIIIICCCCUUUUUAAAAAA

Beltran at 3/45M seems steep, but if he comes here with anything similar to how he's faired with St. Louis, I'm all for it.

^ It's a little more than we wanted but I can live with it. He can hit and is clutch in the post which has been a HUGE problem for us :x

Hell of a roller coaster ride today.

Still haven't made up my mind on the whole Cano deal, but am happy as **** we got Beltran.

I swear to god I had Beltran 3yr / $45mil coming here.....

Yes!

Update Spreadsheet

Think of Beltran in these few ways...
1. He replaces Granderson, easily... And will get on base and drive in runs much better
2. He will be a DH something he's needed for 4 years
3. That swing will increase his HR numbers a bit in Yankee Stadium.
4. He is lights out in the playoffs.

If Cano wanted to be a Yankee, he would be a Yankee. He could have accepted 180-190 if he wanted to stay. He didn't. Oh well.

I like all the moves we've made so far. A few teams were offering Beltran around 40 so I'm fine with the contract. Only one I don't like is Ellsbury. Not sure how we got to 153
