So this semester, I decided to take a course outside of my major simply out of sheer interest and curiosity. The course topic is "Masculinity," and it is part of the Women's Studies department here at my University.

At present, I am also reading a book by a Micheal Kimmel called GUYLAND which explores this nebulous buffer zone by the same name, Guyland, where "boys learn to become men" in manner very much like the blind leading the blind kind of scenario. Simply stated, it's a book that looks into the social complex that is masculinity, and how various factors affect and come into play when exploring masculinty (factors like race, class, sexual preference, gender...etc).

Anyway, this week, the subject of discussion is Pornography and it's overarching effects on males and females in our American society. I've been doing a lot of scholarly reading on the matter and after much thought, most men unknowingly find pornographic material arousing because affirms their masculinity or masculinity in general.

In other words, most men watch porn because they implicitly connect and find arousing, the image of a man being masculine--being "powerful" and/or "in-charge". If you are willing to accept or even entertain this assumption/conclusion, then the next step is to admit the presence of a certain level of homosexual gratification (being thrilled at watching a man be powerful...to the point where you live vicariously through said man). Let's make no mistake about it, porn is largely a "guy" thing and it overtly and covertly normalizes some level of violence and/or antagonism against women.

There's still a lot to read/learn about on the matter so I am in no suggesting that my conclusions are the gospel truth. It's just that as someone whose had bouts with addiction to porn, I find much of this stuff insightful and a bit therapeutic. Much of what I've read has opened my eyes to possible reasons why I and many other males who consume pornographic material, do so. Figured I'd share as NT is somewhat of a "GUYLAND" in its own right.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the matter?

Why do you watch porn? Especially if you are in a relationship with a female?

Do you believe that porn normalizes violence against females?

I watch porn, but nothing too crazy like faux-rape scenes or bukkake or weird things.

anything other than "regular" porn makes me uncomfortable.

Fisting too. Thats just weird man. Thats just weird.

Uh... i'll admit that I see a penis as more or less as just something thats there and is needed to have sex with the chick cause i'm mature enough to know what happens. BUT...don't get this twisted... I HAVE NOT been turned on by that %+%@.
I'm not gay. like AT ALL. Furthermore porn has ALWAYS been about the girls to me. Even before I had really started chasing chicks like that and I used to watch a few flicks I never had even considered anything homosexual. I don't think I could think about anything gay unless someone told me to visualize it.

I see where you're coming from but I think its kinda false. Dudes being "masculine" haven't really influenced my additional viewing of porn. I think thats a pretty wild assumption. Plus even with the anonymity of the internet, you'd think I'd have something to hide with a position like this but not at all.

Porn really does not conjure homosexual thoughts in my mind. Its always about the chick for me. If thats how it connected to you, by all means go ahead and see it that way, just know that I disagree with you.

BTW, i should note that I fully support any gay agenda. I think they are just as much of citizens as we all are...however, I just couldn't ever bring myself to consider doing a gay act.

Fisting is gross.

I have a healthy sex life with my girl but when we dont smash, i watch porn. I'm giving it up because i do think it corrupts your mind and how you look at sex. Not saying that you gotta be gentle and all that in bed, but it does have a weird effect.

Besides, you're not gonna smash those broads in real life. If anything, porn taught me new positions.

Cant front, I seen a porn where these dudes ran through a broad and they all busted in her grill after...it felt mad suspect watching it.

What do you mean by "old"?

It's funny because in the chapter that I am reading right now, called "Babes in Boyland: Pornography", Kimmel notes that while porn is consumed by "men" in general, studies are beginning to reveal that different age groups consume different kinds of genres within porn.

Ex, much of the hardcore super derogatory stuff is consumed by 18-23 yr olds (don't quote me on that), while a alot of the soft core stuff is consumed by older males. This finding was a bit starttling because the belief was that since porn and violence are relatively intertwined, the more years a guy had consumed this stuff, the more violent and chauvinistic he would be. Surprisingly though, it seems like the OG consumers of porn are the less violent in the bunch whereas the younger fresh consumers are the most violent.

So if you view it as "old", perhaps it's a sign that you're growing up yourself...maybe...

I don't watch porn so I can't comment on that aspect of it.  Obviously I have watched it before.  The reason I don't want to watch it regularly or am not interested in watching it regularly is because I think it ruins love.  My opinion of it is that it ruins physical relationships for me.  It raises the expectation of what sex really is.  Porn is most peoples sex education and therefore what they want to attain when having a physical relationship with a woman.  My friends that watch porn regularly or go to strip clubs are often the guys that cheat on their girlfriends and wives.  What they have at home is never good enough, or crazy enough so they have to fill that void by going outside their relationships.

Hope that makes sense, in the middle of dinner.

And that's very much part of the violent aspect of it, wouldn't you say?

I mean, as a man, to get off on that...you gotta have some serious hostility against females in general, don't you think?

And yet, there are genres that cater specifically to this kind of contempt for females. And these genres exist because there is a demand from males. Makes you wonder then why and how all these males became so contemptuous and hateful toward women huh.

IDK man, this class just got me thinking about soooo much.

I watch porn to get a nut, some times for a laugh, and partially for the plot.

I watch porn while in a relationship because my female partner won't be able to instantly gratify me as frequently as I desire. She's not some pleasure robot nor would I expect her or want her to be that in a relationship but porn on the internet is exactly that.

Yeah porn does normalize violence against females but if you're beating your woman or think it's okay to do that or when you see it I'd say a bigger part to that would deal with how you were raised or maybe you simply lack the simple critical thinking skills and rationale to understand why violence against women is not normal.

Pornography does not affirm or reaffirm my masculinity in any way. That sounds like it's grooming a future rapist. It's strictly for pleasure and the aforementioned. Also, this idea of yours fails/does not apply when it comes to men who watch lesbian porn, POV porn (i.e. glory hole), or just a girl getting off on webcam by herself, etc.

Never been about the man being in power to me.
The whole masculinity thing doesn't do anything for me.
I don't live vicariously though the guy in the flick.
I just like bustin a nut to a hot chick getting *%$#+#.
