Nets interested in signing free-agent center Jason Collins

The Brooklyn Nets have been considering free-agent center Jason Collins, the first openly gay player in NBA history, for a return to the franchise, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
As the Nets bring Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry to the franchise via trade, the Nets need proven, dependable role players available at the veteran's minimum price.

Nevertheless, the tweaking of the Celtics-Nets trade package Friday to now include Brooklyn guard MarShon Brooks instead of forward Reggie Evans does lessen the need for another physical, frontcourt player on the Nets' roster. Nets coach Jason Kidd has been an advocate of the possibility of acquiring Collins, but how aggressively the Nets pursue Collins, if ultimately at all, will hinge on how the roster continues to take shape, sources said.
Collins, 34, has close relationships with Kidd and top assistant Lawrence Frank. They were together for seven successful seasons with the Nets when Frank was a coach, Kidd was the point guard and Collins provided a physical, defensive presence.

There's reason to believe that he'd have a strong comfort level returning to an organization that knows him well and values his tough, defensive-minded sensibilities.
Collins made public his sexuality in May, and wherever the first openly gay team player in major North American sports history decides to play promises to bring a level of scrutiny. The intensity of the story lines with the Nets – Kidd as coach; Garnett and Pierce as fading stars in a final championship push – would likely make Collins' personal life less of an everyday public focus.

Garnett and Pierce played with Collins in Boston last season, and one Celtics source told Yahoo! Sports that Garnett was extremely frustrated when Boston traded him to Washington at the February deadline. The Nets plan to re-sign backup center Andray Blatche to re-join starter Brook Lopez and Garnett in the frontcourt.
Collins was the 18th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft and played a part in two NBA Finals appearances for the Nets until he was traded to Memphis in 2008. Collins has since had stops with Minnesota, Atlanta, Boston and Washington.

So Reggie didn't get traded :pimp:

Glad I can get to see some more 20 rebound games!

love the move... we've been in win now mode since we took on the contracts of wallace (now gone), dwill, joe johnson, & lopez. we didn't have a team built for the future, everything was constructed for right now & i feel like this move just puts us in a better position. even at their age & at this point in their career, they still put up good numbers last season & they will still add a lot to the team. production from kg in the paint, mid range, rebounding & energy / grittiness (him & reggie on the floor at the same time :x :wow: :smokin ) & pierce still able to knock down shots & come up clutch down the stretch. they'll help out a lot in situations where we were struggling last season... 2 more big weapons that we can rely on. not only that, but with kidd as a new coach, they'll provide even more of a vet presence on the court. our starting unit is fully loaded :pimp:

i like how our bench is looking as well... we still have some nice pieces in toko, reggie, taylor, mirza, etc. we have to take care of blatche, address the full time backup pg spot, & handle bogdanovic overseas, but i like what we have right now.

im also glad we were able to convince lawrence frank to join kidd on the bench... he, along with the other 2 hires, will help kidd out tremendously. he was the one coach i was keeping my eye on for awhile now since the kidd hire.

jason collins rumors

It would be epic if Kidd became a player coach for the nets. Would have no choice but to buy season tix if that happened

nets fans, can marshon still make something out of himself as a player? was it just lack of opportunities or lack of defense that kept him off the court?

A little of both. He wasn't exactly an offensive wizard either though.
