One of the most infamous stories involving Jordan is that he was cut from the varsity basketball team as a sophomore, which motivated him to become perhaps the best player in the game's history.

"Back then, (most) 10th-graders played JV; that's just the way it was. Nobody ever 'cut' Michael Jordan," Ruby Sutton, who still teaches physical education, told the Charlotte Observer.

"Him not making the varsity that year was not his motivator - he was motivated well before that. He just always wanted to be the best."

the sad thing is, this story became so mucher larger than life back inthe day.

At one point I swear 9 out of 10 times I heard about it the person (or media member) thought he was actually cut as a senior, i.e. he just never played HSbasketball ever.

i remember for a time I thought he was cut as a Senior and somehow Dean Smith discovered him on the streets and gave in a scholly to UNC

I could've sworn that I saw a vid of MJ's high school coach saying "I am the coach who cut Michael Jordan" in one of those official 90s NBAvideos.

I always thought it was stretched and funny since he was only a Sophmore and still played JV....It's not like he didn't play for the HS that year...
 
I believed the myth

this is actually kinda disappointing. The thing is, I thought I read that in one of those mini sports illustrated books when i was growing up.

Indeed, people always say Jordan was cut, yeah from Varsity, he still played JV.
