Sounders FC rookie Servando Carrasco has become fairly well-known around the country recently. Why? Well, his longtime girlfriend Alex Morgan (above) starred with the U.S. women's national team in its runner-up finish at the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Morgan, a 22-year-old from Cal, where she and Carrasco met, had a goal and assist off the bench in the final. She has more than 150,000 Twitter followers (a huge surge in the last month) and has even been the target of Facebook marriage proposals.
What isn't as widely known is that she's been in a relationship with Carrasco (right) for almost four years.
As a result, the Sounders FC midfielder has been the target of some lighthearted disdain -- mostly from disappointed bachelors -- but he laughs it off. Here's a Q&A he had with reporters Monday after training.
* * *
(What do you think of the U.S. game?) "First things first, there's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of from their part. They played their hearts out every time they stepped on the pitch and that's all you can ask for really. Of course they wanted to win, but just the way they handled themselves in the semis and the finals was truly unbelievable. They got a lot of people talking about it, so they definitely deserve a lot of recognition for what they accomplished."

(They seemed to pick up a huge following around the country. Did you notice that?) "I think time and time again they just showed how much heart they have. They were just resilient every time they stepped on the field and especially against Brazil coming back in such a dramatic game. Those type of games people want to watch. There is so much to be proud of them for. Obviously the final result is a little disappointing for them, but I know they're going to bounce back and the Olympics are right around the corner."
(What did you do when Alex scored?) "Oh, I went crazy. I was at my house with my roommates, who are on the team also, and a couple of the neighbors, and I just went nuts. We all play soccer so you know you can't celebrate too much and you have to stay focused. We celebrated and then we sat back down."
(Have you talked to her since?) "Yeah, I have."
(How was she feeling after a big game for her but disappointment for the team?) "It was huge game for her, but obviously she was disappointed. They've worked extremely hard to be where they are today. I didn't want to talk too much about the game. I just wanted to talk about something else."
(How much grief did you get from your teammates throughout the World Cup?) "A lot, but I like it. I'm so proud of her. There's not much to say."
(What happened with you guys taking that picture by her ad?) "That was hilarious. We were pulling up to the hotel in L.A. and of course we get the red light right (before we) turn left to the hotel and there's a huge Sports Authority and there's a billboard of her outside. I just heard one person go, 'Oooooooo!' and there was just a chain reaction through the whole bus. Then the following day we had our team walk and of course (assistant coach Brian) Schmetzer took us in that direction. We took a picture and it was fun. .... All in good fun."
