OFFICIAL 2014 FANTASY FOOTBALL THREAD

In mocks recently I've been goin RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, QB. Usually really only looking for Cameron in the 5th though, I think he's going to have a great year with no WR threat there.

I've done a crapload of mocks just to see where people I'm looking for are falling (which is stupid because injuries always mess up my plans in preseason  )

and it seems the 'good' RBs are usually all gone by rds 2-3 (aside from ellington/spiller who have high upside) - I feel WR is very deep this year and you can get value WR1s in rds 3-4 (Allen/Cruz). That's just my thinking though, getting a RB who's going to touch the ball at least 20 a game is important to me than taking a WR who will get the same amount of looks in later rounds.

Yea the backs go super fast; I think I went RB, WR, RB for my first three picks last year, which I liked...if only Spiller && Ridley weren't the two backs I used those picks on  >: .

That quality dropoff after the first couple rounds is too real, tho, so I might go with a back in each of the first two rounds this year. All this could change, however, if cats take RG3 in the first round like last year in my league...

true..but as we all know you can take that risk if you can hit a home run on that FA running back that explodes like we've seen for that last few year.

top RB's have let me down past few years smh.

rook rook Most definitely; some folks tend to overlook/forget just how clutch picking up that D-Will circa '08 or Zac Stacy from this past year can be. My luck was pretty ****** last season with the backs too (minus Gio and Vereen), before I picked Zac up, so I feel your pain. Spiller (moreso his injury && Bills coaches), Ridley, && Lamar Miller regularly drove me mad, not to mention having a struggling Brady && only like a month of Gronk :x

It's a wonder it even made the playoffs after my 0-4 start. Felt like I should've been awarded the title just for accomplishing that.

A. Ebron isn't a sleeper

B. Ebron shouldn't be your TE 1. Rookie TE normally don't translate well right away, there is a big adjustment period. And while the DET offense is going to be powerful, I think you can't rely on Ebron right away

I think the only person I'm really targeting at TE this year is Cameron in the 5th or Reed in the 6th/7th.. the rest are gone way too early and the other needs for a team are much more apparent. TE seems to be relied on much more every year though, I remember I wouldn't take a TE til pretty much the same spot I'd pick a defense in years before.

I'm pretty much just targeting Jordan Reed in all of my leagues this year too. I'm nervous as hell about the league that I run with all my boys though. I was a Reed stan last year so I know one of them is gonna try and grab him before me . I might have to reach for him in that league.

I wish I can start talking about guys I love or who I'm targeting but unfortunately there are 2 NT'ers in my Keeper Auction league who frequent this thread so I have to be very coy about players and strategy.

That being said I'm need to get this off my chest about "experts" and their "draft strategies"

Most experts you will read from now until August will put out some sort of draft manifesto, as they have for many years. Often times many of these specialists tweak their takes slightly but regurgitate a lot of the same info year after year. The most common occurrence of this is the rule which is harped on my most "experts" and that's: WAIT ON QUARTERBACK.

Every year we hear, oh the QB position is deeper than ever...that is being said again this year. It's being said that you can take one of 18 QBs and be perfectly okay with a strong chance to win a title. And i call that BS. If everyone is "adhering" to the rule of waiting for a QB than value presents itself. More so, value presents itself in drafting one of the top 4 QBs (Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Stafford) in the first 2 rounds because the drop off in talent and points production from 1 elite WR/RB and 1 of the top 4 QB to 2 RB (which is typical strategy a lot of analysts will force down your throat) is significant.

Perhaps I'm skewed because I don't play in boring 10-12 team roto leagues with small rosters and boring 4 pts per TD league. I play in 2 QB leagues where TDs are 6 pts, you lose pts for QBs getting sacked, we start 2 Defenses and it's a league that's been running for 9 years.

Even in my 12 team high pts lg last year I went RB QB and made sure I had Brees on my team. Finished in 2nd place.

I just think a lot of these analysts are so stuck in the archaic thinking that the RB position is so powerful when in reality after the top 5 RBs the talent and reliability factor goes out the window. Hell, in a PPR league where you start 3 WR and a flex I wouldn't be opposed to going WR WR. RB is a dying position in fantasy. Between vultured TDs and injuries it's impossible to rely on.

Come draft day, don't be afraid to think outside the box, and just cause you read an article on ESPN or one of the other major outlets don't take that one analysts take as gospel. I implore people to do research and not stick to one source. There are hundreds of analysts out there...don't bog down on one or two.

end rant.

I think it highly depends on how your league scoring/positions are set up. If it's a standard league, with lower points for QBs than positional players, you obviously would want a positional player at a higher spot than a QB. I usually feel if a top tier QB is there late in the 2nd, I'm jumping on that but more than likely, if it's between say an Andrew Luck or a Keenan Allen.. I'd go the WR spot because i'd get more points for a WR score than a QB. Just my thoughts on it.. but in a 2 QB league or an equal points sharing league, I can definitely see myself going QB in the first 3 rounds.

This is very important to note. A lot of people see one or two names that a lot of 'analysts' are buzzing about.. and just key in on those guys as if their must haves - passing on sure fire points for the 'IT' guy for that Fantasy year. It happens every year, it seems to be Ellington this year (not to say he won't have a great year) but these analysts don't know any more than you do, fantasy is and always will be a game of luck in my opinion. You can go in with all the preparation in the world, but if your guy gets hurt or underperforms... you can't really blame anyone for it. People put too much stock into these Yahoo/Espn/Roto guys who just have people they think will do well.. I'm guilty of it too.

2 QB league if you don't take a QB in the 1st round you're going to lose.

So glad this thread is back. I'm so ready for football

One thing I've noticed with these early posts: lots of Jordan Reed love. I like him, but I feel like he's gonna be really over drafted this year. Lots of targets are going to the WRs in Washington.

Jordan Reed just scares me with his injury history. Jordan Cameron and Kyle Rudolph are the tight ends I'm targeting.

As well as lots of defensive attention.

Maybe it’s just me but I would be nervous about drafting Spiller and Martin

I’m from DC and Jordan Reed is the most hyped player on our squad

Until he can play for a full season I wouldn’t get my hopes up

Spiller has the ability to be top 5 RB, he just needs to stay on the field and not have his touches taken away by backups. I think a lot of people are down on Martin and thus will allow him to be had for a value. That offense seems very intriguing right now and we'll see in training camp how healthy Martin is. If he starts to show life, watch him creep up into the top of the 2nd rd.

Reed is the most buzziest TE next to Cameron. He has to bounce back from the concussions. Could he be the next Julius Thomas in that offense, maybe but he's still raw and has a lot to prove
