I have a meeting today with my team and department because our diversity and inclusion survey came back really low.

I was disappointed because I thought our department had really made good progress in those areas

Then talking to the other managers, apparently all the displeasure is from a couple of white dudes that think the diversity and inclusion efforts are unfair to them (white people, and men)

So now this meeting is about to be a white grievance vent session

Socialist Jesus help me :smh:

This is interesting. I feel like I have been seeing a lot of companies complaining about the effectiveness of their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts. I feel like most of my colleagues and direct reports don’t take it seriously but it’s something I focus on when making hiring decisions.

I try to attend all of my team’s interviews to make sure there is no bias. The key is making sure I consider DEI when selecting my direct reports because then it trickles down to when they are hiring then it trickles down when those folks hire. But companies need to realize it doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a definitely prolonged process but it’s worth it. My team started looking like the United Nations after time

The meeting was scheduled for an hour and a half. But we ended it 30 mins in.

**** went left so quickly :smh:

Like 3-4 dudes had a list of issues with our department's diversity and inclusion efforts. Which included nonsense like:

-They disapprove of the department making a list of minority-owned businesses so we can keep them in mind when we have an event catered. How is that fair to "other groups that own restaurants"
-They disapprove of us changing our recruiting efforts at colleges. We partnered with minority lead student groups to get more people interested in applying for internships and entry-level positions at our company. Your internship classes turned from being lily white to have some diversity, and somehow that is again unfair
-One of the summer interns has dreadlocks, and one person questioned if standards were being lowered for grooming to accommodate him.
-They feel they can no longer speak freely at work regarding current levels :smh:

There were others but I started tuning them out after a while. Elite level **** show

When they started talking about recruiting minorities and more women might lead to a less competent workforce the meeting fell apart. Folk just started leaving or unmuting their mics to take issue.

So we are gonna run it back tomorrow in person. Probably with much fewer people in the meeting. Just managers addressing the issues directly instead of a department-wide thing

The best part of the meeting was when mans was talking about the catering, one of them chimed in and mentioned the last couple of times instead of BBQ or Italian, we got Teriyaki Chicken and "some pork dish".

He said it was cool to switch it up every once in a while, but what if someone just likes traditional American-style food, "Will he never get a say in the menu"

Then the Administrative assistant unmuted and said, "We got that food from a Hawaiian Grill"

I could see other people on camera like...

Very happy that this is happening. Glad my calls to them and letting them know that “Karen” is this generation’s N word only worse made a difference

He doesn’t even know what seasoning tastes like. I’d order everything but American to piss him off for the next 12 months.

One of my coworkers is putting up a huge stink because the native email app on the iPad doesn’t work with our current IT setup, and we can only use the outlook email app on our iPads. He is so pissed because he “doesn’t want to give bill gates any revenue.”

Also, other coworkers also don’t like anything university affiliated because “that’s where liberals hang out”

Culture warring over free food just seems insane to me.

These mother****ers were elbow deep in that Kalua pork, but now they wanna act offended.

Folks fascination over free food at work always puzzles me. I ran a weekly campus wide training session for my functional area and had a budget to get pizzas. These white folks had the audacity to complain saying “It would be nice if we switched it up every once in awhile” and “it would be nice if got more variety in toppings”. I would just look at them like

It’s free food and a luxury. If you don’t like it buy your own lunch or bring it from like you do the other 4 days of the week and did before I started the program. The audacity and nerve :smh:

One lesson that a lot of younger people need to learn is that, yes, sometimes it does hurt to ask.

I have been following this closely and airlines are PEEVED. My understanding is that it is just going to be baked in to ticket prices. Aircraft manufacturers and the supply chain is going to get squeezed too so their pricing will probably go up too but that’s the airlines problem. Margins are thin as is so that’s the only option. Anyone already in the backlog is lucky but pricing of current aircraft moving forward and the next-gen ones will certainly be more expensive.

Bro - that’s the thing, it isn’t just younger people, older folks are on this nonsense too. After the session, I take the leftovers to the break room and folks who didn’t even go the training are like vultures in the break room

One of the most ridiculous instances was wear I got hoagies but you had to make your own, putting the meat, cheese, veggies, etc on the roll. So I took the leftovers to the break room. At like 5PM I was walking past the break room and saw a 50-60 year old white guy stuffing hoagie rolls into a bag to take home

Yeah, it is mostly the older workers that have issues

My younger workers will come to me and suggest changes to how we do things, but then pretty much live with the decision. They will keep making suggestions though.

But let a baby boomer or older Gen Xer that is used to getting their way to be told no, and it is an issue

Airlines have had poor service baked in for too long after the PanAm era. Plus they never needed any laws or explanation to gouge you anyways.
Airlines have terrible service, but airline customers refuse to reward them for anything other than pricing. Most people sort their travel days on price and treat flying like a commodity.

If you have enough brand loyalty to earn status, you generally get much, much better service. Same if you shell out for a premium cabin.

That said, I’m all for forcing airlines to price in things like reimbursements for cancellations or better flat tire policies.

Getting status is game changing. Same goes for hotels too. I usually never get the premium cabin (depending on flight capacity) or the suites for hotels because I am usually able to cham/finesse my way into an upgrade. They also treat you nicer and give you free stuff too. It is also why I always try to stay in the same exact hotels on various cities because the hotel staff gets to know you. I’ve had to stay in hotels for a month at a time so it comes in handy.

Yeah once you’re priority it’s different.

Airlines need to chill though with their prices and no regard for anyone’s time.

In the defense of Southwest, their debacle back in December was in large part due to weather questions. De-icing is planes is a serious issue. It takes a long time leading to delays. Then on top of that, for connecting flights, it can **** up the whole network because your plane can be delayed then your connecting flight could be too so it really creates a mess.

It’s not the pilots or flight attendants aren’t the issue. In Southwest’s case they’re internal software systems. It’s a bit outdated but they pride themselves on using a point-to-point system rather than the traditional hub-and-spoke system. It's a leaner system day-to-day but also means lots of complex scheduling challenges to get planes, pilots and flight crews in the right place at the right time.

The system plus a severe storm can lead to the meltdown they experienced, though
