Say goodbye to a shoe habit. Your rent in say the Bronx will be $1500 for a decent spot, so rent and utilities alone will be half your yearly income. Its def doable, just a lot of sacrifices and saving. Food will be atleast $10 a meal in the city, montly metro is $115 or something also. Forget a car, it will be a pain finding parking and moving it due to alternate side parking rules. Drinks and nightlife can get pricey but thats very manageable. You will be able to enjoy the city but be prepared to penny pinch every now and then.

$40k is $30k after taxes. That's $2500 take home a month. Rent + utilities will be $2k. Don't get me wrong, you can do it, but no way in hell would I do it. No point in living there if I can't enjoy it.

you can barely get by on 40k in the bay, rent + utilities should be ~35% of your income

so unless you plan on sharing a studio wit 2 musicians, then i wouldnt do it

40k you are lucky if you can afford milk and the bare necessities after you pay your bills/rent/whatever. It's tough out here in NYC

 I'm sure he made more than regular sales associates since he was managerial staff/corporate. But I know for a fact that the people on the sales floor are on an hourly wage + commission.
