Idiocy on the Internet

Internet journalism is an oxymoron, I am more and more convinced.

Of late it seems there’s a new story about me somewhere on the net every day, or near enough to make no matter. Many get things wrong. For the most part I ignore them. I have better things to do than try and track down every weird rumor or out-and-out fabrication that pops up on some obscure website trolling for traffic.

Every so often, however, one of these stories gains an improbable currency, and just chuckling at the insanity no longer suffices.

That seems to be happening right now. All of a sudden this crazy story about my finishing THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING years ago is popping up everywhere. No, I am not going to provide links. I don’t want to reward purveyors of misinformation with hits.

I will, however, say for the record — no, THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING are not finished. DREAM is not even begun; I am not going to start writing volume seven until I finish volume six

It seems absurd to me that I need to state this. The world is round, the Earth revolves around the sun, water is wet… do I need to say that too? It boggles me that anyone would believe this story, even for an instant. It makes not a whit of sense. Why would I sit for years on completed novels? Why would my publishers — not just here in the US, but all around the world — ever consent to this? They make millions and millions of dollars every time a new Ice & Fire book comes out, as do I. Delaying makes no sense. Why would HBO want the books delayed? The books help create interest in the show, just as the show creates interest in the books.

So… no, the books are not done. HBO did not ask me to delay them. Nor did David & Dan. There is no “deal” to hold back on the books. I assure you, HBO and David & Dan would both have been thrilled and delighted if THE WINDS OF WINTER had been delivered and published four or five years ago… and NO ONE would have been more delighted than me.

I have said it before: don’t believe everything you read on the internet.

Except here, of course.

I never thought I would say this but Season 8 has made me want to read Winds of Winter even more.

I truly hope GRRM is hammering away to finish these books because the way the show is going has been disappointing & head scratching.

I don't hate this season like the many in the show thread but I understand (some of) their gripes.

Yo have u heard the theory of Jon being brandon or benjens kid.

Im starting to become team ashrya +ned = jon. But theres a theory saying benjen is ashryas lover and when she suposedly conmitted suicide. Thats when and why he took the black.

Deeper dive the ashrya and ned thing makes a TON of sense. But u can replace ned with benjen/ brandon

I have read about the ned and ashara theory but not the benjen and ashara. I'll have to look that one up.

Yeah the show been weak since they butchered Dorne. I’ve been half in and half out since. Happy people are finally noticing it. Same thing happened with TWD too
TWD been trash since s2 though and that basically the start since s1 is like 4 or 6 episodes.

Tdogg, you're my boy, but GRRM asked Benioff and Weiss who Jon's parents were and he said they answered correctly. Unless you're arguing show depiction wasn't the answer that is gonna be book depiction i think this battle's lost.

tdogg refusing and denying who jon’s parents are like he denied stannis being dead on the show.

I think people took this out of context. He asked who do you think jons parents were. and said they answered....also doesn't mean he was telling the truth.
that whole story of how they were allowed to do it just seems false. they were probably just the only ones who read the books that wanted to do it.

A 5 year old could have answered R+L= J so for that to be the criteria to write the show just sounded like a smoke screen.
those 3 have never been on the same Camera saying that.
I wouldn't take that for gospel

Well his Stannis argument had more merit. Before then they had never shown a POV character die off camera. Never shown any character but Jon Arryn die off camera to be fair, and Arryn was killed off camera specifically to create mystery around his death.

It wasn't until much later we learned Benioff and Weiss just suck and cut Stannis's death scene and didn't realize it would be a thing. In one of their interviews they actually talk about the moment when Brienne finally strikes Stannis down with her sword and her emotions afterwords, and it didn't occur to them that as this is a visual medium and the books overuse a plot mechanism where a claimed dead character was never actually killed - a thing their source material may be doing RIGHT now with Stannis - that they should actually show the death, if only so we can understand the decisiveness of the event and its aftermath.

Wasn't Tdogg's fault the event was handled badly though.

I think saying that they took the context of that anecdote about R+L=J out of context, is a convenient reading of the event on your part. You can say he lied or he's since changed his mine, but I think it's pretty clear at the time of his statement, he wanted us to understand that Benioff and Weiss knew who Jon's parents were. It's also not as obvious as a 5 year old figuring it out, because there are people in this thread and in the TV thread that had read at least some of the books through #3 and still struggled with following it.

I also don't think you should take for granted that TV show producers/runners actually read the source material, let alone understand it. A lot of people would fail that test as simple as it was.

At this point you'd be better off saying D&D gave GRRM the answer and then decided to do something completely different for the show.

That's what I meant by, "Unless you're arguing show depiction wasn't the answer that is gonna be book depiction i think this battle's lost."
