Why do people use area codes to "represent"?

What's so cool about telling dudes you're from the 617 or the 212 or whatever area code there is? Dudes say they're repping the 212, why don't you just say you're from NYC? I have to pull out my phone and type in the area code just to find out where you're from.

What is the meaning of this?
