I never had a sprained ankle, but I had a injury in my foot recently which kept me out for 2 months. My podiatrist told me that the best way to strengthen yourlower legs and feet is to go barefoot when you are not playing or you can also buy yourself some vibram five fingers.

I just needed to buy sofsole insoles for cushioning in the forefoot because the first time I played in them on outdoors man...... the ball of my feet hurts sobad I could not walk for a day. Other than that, you are good.
