2 things

Has there ever been a team to deliberately tank and attract a big time free agent in recent history? Is that a thing that happens?

All the standout players (x young henry) from last year haven't been involved. Not expecting much but would like to see how the team looks with them active

But seriously, tanking and not attracting free agents are only related because tanking usually means the team's not good enough to immediately attract a star in the same summer.

Plus the same rules still apply. Most of the teams that have tanked over the past decade (if not since the lottery was invented) aren't big players for free agents even when they're not tanking.

if you're a team thats bad enough to tank and get a bottom 5 pick then you're not going to attract any free agents by exceeding expectations and winning 35 games

It all depends on a couple of things:
1. Whether we luck in on a new lottery system which is supposed to pass, and start this upcoming season.
2. If we trade for another 1st. Jordan Hill's contract is perfect for a playoff team. He injects energy, and the team could control his contract. He has veto power, but if it's to a playoff team, and we indicate we would decline his player option... He likely approves.
3. What the cap is next year. If the NBA tries to ease up the salary cap so there isn't a $16mil cap increase in 2016-17, cap could be $70-72mil, or if they just let it go up naturally, cap would be about $66.5mil.

There's a scenario that we could have Kobe, Swaggy P, Randle, Kelly, Clarkson, Sacre... 3 First Rounders, 1 - 2nd Rounder and $27-29mil if they ease the cap increases.

All those new picks + Swaggy, Kelly, Clarkson & Sacre is most of a really good bench.

We'd need a Center, PG & Someone half way competent at SF (Wes Johnson year 3 :lol )
Find another shooter off the bench.

Team would be back in the playoffs next season.

The FA doesn't have to be this year. My point for Jim was wait out the two years of Kobe, built up the draft picks, and score a FA from there.

If it happens next summer, great, but if it has to wait til Kobe leaves, that's fine too.

I think you have to get something in 2015. We were fine missing out this year. But can't just keep that going.

I'd push my chips in on Marc Gasol. I don't think he's a lock to stay in Memphis. He certainly could stay. But at the same time, that team is going to be the same for the first 3 years of his contract. Would make more sense to go to a team that will have the flexibility to pair him with another Big Time Free Agent in 2016, as opposed to hoping someone outside of Mike Conley may just develop. Also next to Kobe, Julius Randle, and still have the ability to keep Jeremy Lin (I don't see his contract increasing). That's a playoff team in 2015-16 with all the other stuff.

If not Gasol, I'd even overpay for DeAndre Jordan. Isn't a star, but a guy who is a defensive beast, and will get his points in a way that does not impact Julius Randle. We've seen it with Blake (I'm just saying a PF can get his touches and points next to DeAndre, no way comparing the 2 players).

It at least gives us something to sell to a KD. A heyyyy we have the front court set, whoever we draft in 2015, can afford you, and still have room for another player along with all these other guys off the bench.

No doubt I wouldn't mind a C, just not stressed if it takes that extra year.

Agreed. It shouldn't be taken for granted that we can just float around losing enough games to be bottom five bad and still be interesting to key free agents. The only way we get both a top five pick and a key free agent is if we luck into the draft like you said. Otherwise it's one or the other.

If we want to be a destination for quality players we need to demonstrate that we're a quality team or at least trending in that direction. We need byron to get his head out of his ***. We need randle to develop and be near the top of his rookie class. We need to get healthy and make a mid season trade to improve the roster. We need to at least be mildly competitive or we are really no different than any other bottom feeding, pan handling franchise begging for spare picks.

Or neither.

Nobody is saying tanking to get a pick will also lead directly to a big free agent signing. Though it would be a nice scenario.

Getting the Top 5 pick wouldn't also solve our woes with FAs. Nobody's saying that. Though the player we get (along with Randle) might turn into players that could, in the future.

If we want to be a destination for quality players, we need other quality players, period. Doesn't matter how we get them.

If we continue to struggle with FAs like this year (which is not a given, hopefully), we can hope the players we draft become those quality players (which is also not a given).

I assume someone has said this before but...

What if they hired Scott as a way of tanking indirectly?

Damn.

Xavier also planning on getting the Kobe knee treatment, depending on what his second opinion says.

It's like the Laker magic left as soon as Dr. Buss died ...he was the only thing keeping the bad spirits away. Now that he's gone the damn flood gates have opened
