Mason & Ireland July 7

Saw this on Reddit - John Ireland gives some info about the Lakers' pitch to Melo (around the 15 minute point)

Producer Joel Silver prepared a 4-minute trailer about what it would be like to be the face of the Lakers, narrated by Tobey Maguire.
- At the end, Silver said "it may be better for you to go be a basketball player in another city. But in LA, if you're the face of the Lakers, your family will be better off. Your wife will have more opportunities. You can be a power couple."
- The Time Warner execs said they have 24 hours to fill with Laker programming. Melo and Lala can basically come up with their own idea for a show.
- His life after basketball would be amazing - they pointed to KAJ, Kobe, Shaq, Magic, and how they are all famous and influential.

I envision this is how the meeting went down:

Team Melo and or Anti tank coming out landing body blows :lol

Can we sign lance for 10 per year, Isaiah for 7 per year, Monroe for 12 a year. That adds up to 29 plus Kobe contract and if you stretch Nash that's like 55ish between all those new pieces and kobe. Is that even possible?

At those numbers, yes we could.

But there are a few problems:
1. They won't stretch Nash if it isn't for a Superstar
2. Pistons will match $12mil on Monroe.
3. Kings would match $7mil on Thomas.

Kings wont match thomas

Im going cold on signing lance and or lil zeke

Lance is a headcase with a troubled off court past

Zeke is just a straight chuck master

:lol

As opposed to the new kings, sixers, or bucks yaaaaaaaayyy

I just don't find it realistic that this "stacking of assets" is feasible nor productive to the cause of landing KD in 2 years or whoever 7 years down the road in AD. Perfect example are the Cavs right now, we'll see if LBJ actually goes there because they've had far more assets than we can acquire in this next year and what's the one thing most are saying why he wouldn't go there; the lack of experience of the other guys around him especially with LBJ being in a win now mindset.

Let's assume KD is in that same position in 2016, still ringless and looking for an opportunity to win immediately, you think that he's going to wait on an unproven rookie and 2nd year guy that may or may not have shown his ability to be force. Or that two other marginal talents in Monroe or Lance or whoever they sign instead if they wiff on Melo/Bron going to really be enough? I just don't believe it. Stars want to play with other stars, just look at how they're holding hostage the league right now trying to play with their buddies. If anything I believe having Melo here, and Kobe off the books in 2016 will give us a far greater shot at getting KD than an rook and Randle alone will.

And then after KD passes, we're waiting another 5 years to try and stack assets and continuously suck and before you know it we're the Sacramento Queens, a bunch of high draft picks with nothing to show for it.

1) What do you guys think is best case for this squad if we lure JUST Melo?

2) What about best case with Melo & Lance?

3) Is Love still being courted by us?

4) Is Rondo still being shopped on the low? I feel like he would love LA.

1) 1st round win at best this season.
2) Getting Melo and Lance will be difficult, unless Pau takes a significant paycut or Melo come's in for a little less than the max.
3) We don't have anything to get Love outside of Randle right now, but I'm more inclined to believe that Flip is stupid and he may actually make it to free agency next summer, it'll take some maneuvering (like getting Pau to sign a low deal this year and retaining his bird rights to resign him to a bigger deal next summer), but if the cap increases enough, we could sign him for pretty close to his max deal next summer (think it starts around $16 mil).
4) Sure Rondo is being shopped, just don't think there going to be any significant moves until Bron/Melo/Bosh decide what they are going to do.

*sigh*

Randle would have 2 seasons under his belt, entering 3rd year.
Top 5 2015 would be thru his rookie year, entering his 2nd.

Shaq left Penny, Ho.Grant, Nick, and DScott

To play with

Rookie Kobe Bryant, Nick Van Exel and Eddie Jones.

You tank one year, one. Ride out two horrible contracts, then rebuild.

Sixers, Kings, etc not remotely similar.

2 year rebuild after losing Dwight Howard for nothing. Kobe can gun all he wants with butts in seats, won't equal wins.

What stars have joined Melo in his 11 years?

Didnt they sign collison for 6 mill?

I think they are still holding out hope they can get rondo

If we somehow get melo and say kobe and pau come off the books( if he re signs a two year contract) how much will that leave us with to get another big free agent?

Lakers Franchise > Knicks Franchise

We can and I believe will get stars to play with Melo.... If we get Melo.

If we don't get Melo all bets are off...and I think you will just be even more upset when they throw Max money at bosh or somebody else....:{

And LA was paying him a lot more money than Orlando.

Also Shaq wanted to be in LA because it is what his personality was, and what he wanted to do off the court.

You keep saying top 5 2015 as if that's really a realistic possibility though. There's about as much of a chance of that happening as us getting Bron and Melo to both sign for $1.

How many instances do you have of people doing what Shaq did? He left a good young core in ORL to go to a young core in LA for more money. That record deal at the time had a little something to do with him joining LA, you can debate whether it was more cash motivated than personnel until the cows come home. And we still didn't do a damn thing until Phil got there. You want us to move on from what we used to do yet are trying to duplicate something that was a once in a lifetime type deal.

I mean NBA drafts are rigged. Gotta have faith in Silver making sure the team #1 in revenue (by a long shot) rebuilds swiftly.

And it's not tanking per se if you just simply suck. Furthermore, watching grandpa Kobe go for 30ppg should be entertaining. I'm just saying, things could be worse.

If the draft was rigged, Celtics & Lakers would have had the 1st & 2nd picks this year.

remember Cleveland was farrrr from being the worst team in the league last year (record wise of course...because we know Cleveland will always be the worst period) and they got the first pick so anything is definitely possible.

Dude nobody under 100 y.o. cares about Boston. NBA wanted that Bron back home narrative. If only the 2013 draft wasn't full of bums Cavs would look super legitimate. I think even with Bron they fall short for next couple...
