I think what I'm noticing is the shine from the plastic on the retros where as the OGs was some really nice leather. I wish they did a real OG retro of these.

On par with how other retro dunks have been close but not identical to OGs. Sambas may have been the closest, ugly ducklings were all a little off, viotechs were obviously miles apart, but at the end of the day the colorways are still great enough to make imperfect retros good standalone shoes.

The way I think of it is if something like a 2019 viotech was an original shoe for the first time and the 2002s never existed, I would still like the 2019 version for what it is.
