The King County Sheriff's Office released a video surveillance tape this morning allegedly showing 8-year veteran Deputy Paul Schene, 31, of Auburn, assaulting a 15-year-old girl in custody at a holding facility at SeaTac City Hall in November.
King County prosecutors charged Schene with fourth-degree assault, alleging that he kicked the girl in the abdomen, slammed her against a wall and pulled herhair.
The video was released after Schene pleaded not guilty to the assault charge on Thursday and a King County Superior Court judge denied a motion by his defenselawyers to keep the video from being released.
Schene said in his report on the incident that the girl kicked off one of her shoes, and it struck him in the shin, injuring him.
The judge released Schene on personal recognizance.
According to prosecutors, two deputies had arrested two girls - the girl who was allegedly assaulted and another 15-year-old - on suspicion of auto theft earlyNov. 29 after they were stopped driving a stolen car.
The girls were taken to the SeaTac holding facility for fingerprinting.
Prosecutors allege Schene kicked the girl in the abdomen, slammed her against a wall and pulled her hair after she kicked her shoe off at him.
The incident was captured by security cameras.
The girl then complained of breathing difficulties. An aid car was called, but paramedics concluded the girl did not need treatment.
The deputy used "more force than necessary as far as prosecutors are concerned and as far as we're concerned," sheriff's spokesman JohnUrquhart said earlier this month.
The day after the incident, another detective at another work site was assigned to investigate the alleged assault by the deputy. Schene was placed on paidadministrative leave later that day.
He remains on leave.
A sheriff's spokesman said an internal-investigations unit review would determine discipline for the deputy, who could be terminated if it's determinedan attack occurred.
In June 2006, deputy Schene shot and killed a mentally ill man who attacked him on Interstate 5.
Pedro Jo, 33, a felon who was described by family members as schizophrenic, was shot several times after Schene pulled him over for driving erratically.
Witnesses said that Jo initially stopped his car in the middle of the freeway, moved toward the shoulder and attacked Schene after walking through traffic whenthe deputy tried to loosen the handcuffs on a female prisoner who was in the back of his patrol car.
According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office at the time, Jo bit, kicked and ripped the cord of the deputy's portable radio before Schene fatallyfired on Jo.
An inquest jury found that the shooting was justified because Schene had reason to believe his life was in danger.
In 2002, Schene was involved in another shooting incident when he wounded a suspect in a car theft after a chase in Burien.
@ the deputy's past history
i hate these kinda !#!+@%#
Really though, what the hell was dude thinking!? How you gonna body a 15 year old girl like that for hitting you in the shin with a shoe?! Ridiculous.
I see a large law suit in the future.
. And people wonder why cops are hated so much.....Damn pigs.....
what a piece of .....
and this happened around my way
what an idiot.
Damn that was really uncalled for, I think she kicked her shoe at the deputy, but damn. He socked her twice when she was on the ground and grabbed her hairlike a rag doll. She didn't even resist arrest. SMH.
she didn't even "kick" the shoe at him. more like lobbed it in his direction as an act of defiance. obviously the guy is not cut out forthat job - thin skin. the smell of lawsuit is pretty green right about now.
I think they said for her to take off her shoes because right before he started to yoke her up she was in the process of taking off the other shoe if you lookclosely.
Still that sh.. was uncalled for. I remember one time I got arrested and this one cop was taking his job a little more seriously than he should of and lettingthe power get to his head. It was me and two other's that was arrested and locked up. So about a day or two after I got out of the bookings I was playingball at a park, and low and behold I see where the dude lived... and he recognized me when he seen me because he looked like a deer caught in the headlight. Yono lie I kid you guys not within a week dude moved, yes in about a week or two I seen a Budget truck moving things infront of his house. I had let whathappened while I was in the precinct go after a few day so it was whatever, but I can't lie I was thinking about maybe plotting to raid his crib because hehad to have heaters in it.
Lord knows they aren't human and no other profession has corrupt people in it!
damn he chris browned her.
15 years old??? Foreal thou?!?!
Big !+! @#$$!
you talk back to authority, you get beat down. theres no ifs ands or buts about it.. its sad they have that much authority that clouds their judgement.. theall mighty " IM RIGHT"
Wow he didn't have to do all that.
I'm not condoning what the officer did, and don't think she deserved it. However, if you mouth off to a cop and toss stuff at them, youmay unfortunately get the cop with the short fuse. And in that sense, you dig your own grave. For every one cop like this, there are 1,000 that aren't. Sheran into the one.
Damn thats terrible...
