Maybe I put too much thought into things,
but I was just thinking how is it that African-Americans are the only group
that people who's ethnic classification is used adjectivally.
example:
"dude you're acting so black right now"
"you sound black"
Like I've never heard someone say "you're acting so Chinese" or "you sound Dominican" those are "Irish people clothes" or "I don't wanna seem too Indian acting"
But when ever someone uses it as an adjective, it's always to make someone aware they need to be corrected because they're being socially undesirable at the moment.
How can you "act black?" Does Barrack Obama "act black"? Does Tiger Woods "sound black"?
Me personally I've improved as adult as far as my diction, word choice and annunciation but yet
when I meet some one Caucasian or non-African American I'm greeted with "Yo Daaaaawg" or the latest "trend" slang from the African American community.
It would be ok, but I know if I entertain the foolery when more important matters are being dicussed I wont be expect to offer much.
But what's sad is it's not a two way street. Other groups aren't met with a pre-disposition.
When an immigrant Asian speaks fluent english with proper diction, THAT'S IT, HE SPEAKS FLUENT ENGLISH...Same for Hispanics, Same for Indians etc.
But when an African American displays distinguished intelligence and admirable repoire he's ostracized as "acting white".
And again, if a guy says "Yo Dawgg gimme dap" and you accept that dap and begin return urban sang and banter
you're MARKED as undesirable and pretty much met with ambivalent acceptance into "the group", whether occupational, educational, social, or sexual.
Like you're not allowed joke, imitate, or welcome anything that resembles urban dysfunctional behavior, meanwhile EVERYONE around you manuever "freely"
without appearing uptight and socially aware.
