The issue here stems from the misuse of the term "acting black" or "acting white".

In general, slang that white people used to use was "awesome" "that's so cool" "he's a d-bag". So I would call that talking like a "white guy".

The Black slang was like "youngbul" "that's my isht" "he's a P". So I would call that talking black, as in slang.

The problem is when idiots think that talking proper is "talking white" or "acting white". When it's really about the slang and it's almost like saying someone has a southern or northern accent or whatever.


My next example, casual clothes. In general alot of people in urban Black areas dress differently than white people. It's just like an urban culture difference, not positive or negative.

The problem is when people associate a few outliers(pants sagging, loud,etc) with "acting black", and we know what these negative outliers are. It would be like if someone were to associate "acting white" with making racist statements.

Well ignorant people over-rely on differences in their everyday interactions with someone of another "race". Race is not culture. If a black woman speaks in an English accent and dresses Mary Poppins why would anyone tell her she "sounds white"?


And there are many accents within the black "race"......I speak in a pseudo-long island/British/ Boston/ Nigerian accent and still get the "you sound white and proper". My accent also changes a bit depending on who I'm speaking with I sound super Nigerian when I'm with my family.

 It's ignorant and racist. Not every black person (Which includes Black Africans, Europeans-yes there are black Germans, Dutch, Frenchmen) etc sounds like a goon from Da Heightz. Most people who think like this have never left their block and have an extremely narrowminded view of the world we live in.

still a weak argument....especially when your just said you act like who you around which means you basically cosigned what DC said..its called people are products

of there environment...some people take up characteristics that aren't common in there's social scope....hence da term "actin____".

Me personally I've improved as adult as far as my diction, word choice and annunciation but yet
when I meet some one Caucasian or non-African American I'm greeted with "Yo Daaaaawg" or the latest "trend" slang from the African American community.
It would be ok, but I know if I entertain the foolery when more important matters are being dicussed  I wont be expect to offer much.
But what's sad is it's not a two way street. Other groups aren't met with a pre-disposition.

When an immigrant Asian speaks fluent english with proper diction, THAT'S IT, HE SPEAKS FLUENT ENGLISH...Same for Hispanics, Same for Indians etc.
But when an African American displays distinguished intelligence and admirable repoire he's ostracized as "acting white".
And again, if a guy says "Yo Dawgg gimme dap" and you accept that dap and begin return urban sang and banter
you're MARKED as undesirable and pretty much met with ambivalent acceptance into "the group", whether occupational, educational, social, or sexual.
Like you're not allowed joke, imitate, or welcome anything  that resembles urban dysfunctional behavior, meanwhile EVERYONE around you manuever "freely"
without appearing uptight and socially aware.

well talkin to black people i don't take on a stereotypically "black" accent or mannerisms.........whatever the hell that is

 The stereotypical black American you see everyday on your block isn't representative of the entire African diaspora.  And the fact that my Nigerian accent comes out at times, makes the whole "you don't sound/act black" statement obsolete.


The term "Actin'______", insinuates being something you're not. If you know anything about second generation Nigerians you'd know the accent change I was speaking of is spontaneous. If a black person from China, born and raised speaks Japanese and has Japanese mannerisms....is he/she still "acting".


like i said people are diverse, stop generalizing.

 



This is also why I refrain from telling white kids who rock long white tees and girbaud jeans 5 sizes too big that they're "Acting black". Firstly, that doesn't represent all black people
