When Marcus Jordan took the floor Wednesday night for the University of Central Florida's basketball team wearing Air Jordans, school sponsor adidas made it clear to the university that its deal with the school - a five-year contract set to expire next June - is now done.

"The University of Central Florida has chosen not to deliver on their contractual commitment to adidas," the company said in a statement given to CNBC. "As a result, we have chosen not to continue our relationship with them moving forward."

Last month, UCF officials said that an adidas official had agreed to allow Michael Jordan's younger son Marcus to wear the Nike shoes named after his father even though the school had a deal with competitor adidas. But adidas officials, which were working on an extension on a deal with the athletic department, said that they never granted that exemption.

Shoe and apparel contracts with schools normally guarantee that all student-athletes will wear what is made by the contracted shoe and apparel company unless the athlete, for some reason, can't wear that specific shoe because of medical reasons and a custom shoe can't be made.

It is not clear how much the school could lose because of the breach of contract. It also is not apparent whether another brand, perhaps Nike or its Jordan brand, will step in to replace the deal, which covered all of the school's sports.

UCF officials say they have not received any official statement from adidas on the status of the school's contract.

I wouldnt say its a guarantee, but his son being on the team is a pretty big reason to pick them up.

Yea, but adidas covered all their other sports too, and I'm not sure Jordan covers stuff like football gear. Kind of selfish imo to do something thataffects not just your sport but other team sports too

Don't feel bad for UCF...they knew what they were getting into the second they recruited Marcus Jordan. Getting dropped by Adidas was probably part of thebig picture as soon as Marcus Jordan signed on.

I saw this coming from a mile away when he refused to wear Adidas. Nike will scoop them up, look at the colleges that they sponser. Why not add another one?

thats because the Maryland athletic dept doesnt have a full athletics contract with UA. only Ralph and the football team.

UCF has lost their ENTIRE apparel and footwear deal so the next company to come in would likely have to take over the whole A.D.

Also The inventor of UA is a Maryland alum thats why they got their deal 1st

I knew that he was an alum already. It obviously wasn't a big deal if they let him play. They could have benched him for the entire game helleven the season if they wanted to keep the deal but they let him play knowing that this would happen. They weren't oblivious to the fact that they wouldlose the contract. Seeing as most sports are ending or over, it doesn't hurt them as much as people would think. Its not going to be hard for them to get anew deal.

This part I agree with. Seeing that the Adidas deal was worth $1.9 mil they might get the same amount or hell even less. How long has UCF beenoutfitted by Adidas?

Im not sure the school's stature matters much. When JB first started sponsoring a few college teams, North Carolina A & T was a Jordan school. Maybethere was some connection I don't know about that led to that, but still there are even several high school teams in my area that are sponsored by Nike,Adidas, and UA so I don't even think it's that big of a deal anymore.

Since like 2000. the last yr I played ball we switched from Reebok to Adidas, but the b ball team had been adidas alot longer
