Damn, a declining 1 yr rental for a late 1st round pick? With the way the rookie salaries are, a late 1st rounder is one of the best values.

Since most people only seem to evaluate defensive players for their sack totals, Seymour doesn't get anywherenear his due, because his greatest value is in that he absolutely shuts down the run. It's impossible to run behind the left tackle when Seymour'splaying.
So basically, we just lost our best run-stopper and our top pass-rusher on the DL. AKA, the MVP of our defense. I get that we got value for him before hewalked, but don't be surprised when our run defense suddenly becomes a problem this year. Maybe Belichick's banking on our opponents playing from toofar behind to exploit Seymour's absence against the run, but this isn't going to help us win any games in january...

Its a gamble, but it could make the Raiders better. they gone have a top 10 pick at the end of the year. So in the past 4 years they drafted in the top 10everytime. Once usually cripples a franchise. AL has arready taken loans out to keep the team, so this is a finanical move too.

When Oakland pulled off its blockbuster deal Sunday for Richard Seymour, there is no way the Raiders thought it would be this difficult.
The Raiders had to think Seymour would be preparing to face San Diego in five days rather than staying away from the team for three days. It is now crystal clear that Seymour is not comfortable with this situation.
ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested Wednesday that Seymour could perhaps be swayed to report to Oakland with a new contract. The Raiders are known for overpaying players, so, yes, if a huge, new contract is presented to the 29-year-old Seymour, it could make him more amenable to heading West. Seymour is set to be a free agent after the season.
Still, if Seymour is not interested in joining Oakland under any terms, the deal could eventually be voided. In that case, Seymour would be sent back to New England and Oakland would keep the 2011 first-round pick it gave New England in the deal.
New England coach Bill Belichick seemed to acknowledge Wednesday that it could be a possibility.
"Right now, we're concerned about Buffalo and that's what we're working on and whatever happens, then we'll deal with whatever happens when it happens," Belichick said in his press briefing. "Whether that's this week, next week, next year, next month, I don't know."
With each passing day Seymour stays away from Oakland, his chances of playing against the Chargers are getting more difficult. So, if Seymour does report, he could conceivably be in Oakland for 15 games. That would be a steep price for a first-round pick.

No-show defensive lineman Richard Seymour is on the clock.
The Oakland Raiders sent Seymour the five-day letter, which means that the former Patriots defensive lineman has five days to report to the Raiders or be suspended, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter Thursday night.

Once the Raiders sent the letter, it imposed a deadline on both sides, with plenty to lose for each. Oakland could lose the player it covets, and Seymour could lose a season of earning $3.685 million.
"I don't have any knowledge of that right now," Cable told the Associated Press when asked about the letter. "I've heard something about that, but I have no knowledge of that right now. It has been nothing more than just trying to get some of these details worked out, that's it."
In the meantime, the Raiders re-signed defensive tackle William Joseph on Thursday.
Joseph was cut by the Raiders on Sunday after the team acquired Seymour from New England in exchange for its first-round draft pick in 2011.
Oakland was granted a roster exemption by the NFL while Seymour's situation waits to be resolved.
"I have nothing new to report," Raiders coach Tom Cable said following Oakland's night practice. "But in the meantime this was granted to us so we could get ready."
Trevor Scott, who tied for the Raiders lead in sacks as a rookie in 2008, will likely start at right defensive end against the Chargers if Seymour does not show up.
"It's out of my control, whatever's going to happen is going to happen," Scott said. "So if he does get here, some things are changed or different. I'm not going to let it affect me."
San Diego coach Norv Turner, whose teams travels to Oakland for Monday's season opener, said Seymour could still have an impact in the game if he reports soon.
"He's an outstanding football player," Turner said in a conference call Thursday. "A guy who's that good a football player, I think you find a spot, whether it be as an end pass rushing on third down, whatever those things might be. But certainly, it's hard to fit a guy in and get him going in a short period of time."
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who has rushed for more yards (1,906) and touchdowns (19) against the Raiders than any other team, also expects Seymour to play well if he reports.
"He's a pro for one, he knows how to play football and he knows how to turn it on when it's time to turn it on," Tomlinson said. "I think he can absolutely have an effect on the game."
Joseph, a former first-round pick of the New York Giants who played in eight games for Oakland last season before being released on Sunday, wasn't surprised the Raiders re-signed him.
"The day they let me go, they released me, coach Cable said, 'Don't go nowhere,'" Joseph said. "I was just around, sticking around, seeing what was going to happen."

I find it hard to believe that if Seymour never shows up, we don't get our pick back.
Fat chance of that happening. Seymour may not WANT to play here, but as a professional athlete,
there's not much he can do about it. I'm sure Al Davis is ready to pay the man when the time's appropriate.
If Seymour should be mad at any organization, it should be the Patriots. They promised him
an extension on the contract and then an about face and traded him to us.

Well you'd be wrong on that. As far as the Pats are concerned they are done and their hands are clean. At this point it is between the Raidersand Seymore. The Pats are going to keep that pick whether he goes or not. And as far as Davis being ready to pay the man, I dont think that is the problem. Hedoesnt want to play for that bum %$* team. If hes willing to give up 3 mill to not play for them this year what makes you think he wants to sign a long termdeal with ya?
He could just sit out this year and look for a nice FA contract in the offseason with a team he wants to play for, since this is his last contractual year. Ithink its all gonna come down to, does he want to risk injury in a contract year playing for a team that has little to no chance of even making the playoffs.

Unfortunately, the NFL doesn't work that way. If that 5 day letter was in fact sent and Seymour does NOT show and has to sit out this year, his contractwill be frozen
and will not be a FA until he plays out that one year. We have the rights to his contract.
He's not really screwing us, besides the fact we're missing out on the play from a Pro Bowl DE, like he's screwing himself.
I really do not see the problem here. We are a bad team, but he will be paid a King's ransom regardless. He might have to
move his kids for the 3-5 years he will be here, but the Bay Area is a very easy place to assimilate to. He's won rings and is
now on the downside of his career.
Anyways, time will tell us exactly what happens.

Good look. I didnt know that rule and just read up on it. It does make sense that those rules are in place Otherwise players could just be babysabout trades and not show up. ZSo like you said it looks like everyone is gonna have to just sit back and see what happens. But its not looking like theRaiders getting their pick back is one of the options.
