Any degree of organization requires us to accept imperfectly defined abstractions. We can generally agree regarding what constitutes "blue" and "red," but these are nonetheless arbitrary categories. You could spend eternity arguing that, because no one can specify the EXACT point at which blue and red become purple, the categories themselves therefore hold no meaning and the concept of grouping various wavelengths into broad color categories is pointless. You can problematize literally any categorical distinction - including something as "absolute" as quantification. Claiming that you have five fingers on each hand involves an underlying assumption with regard to the identification of discrete units. "What about people who lost a finger below the knuckle? Does that count as a whole finger? A quarter of a finger? WHERE WILL THE MADNESS END!?!?!"

Look, we've accepted the responsibility of managing a very large online community. To function, we have to operate in a very pragmatic fashion. NikeTalk couldn't operate at all if I had to sit here and endlessly debate every single decision. This is getting ridiculous.

We've NEVER allowed trolling on NikeTalk. That doesn't mean that no user in the history of the board has ever gotten away with it, but it's against the spirit of our policy.

People are intentionally using a term to irritate other users.  That's what trolling is.  I don't want to hear all this "they're just words" nonsense because, if that's the case, then NOTHING matters and it's just one miserable free for all.  We've had that board (NikePark) and it's EXACTLY the reason why NikeTalk was created.  If you want a forum with no rules, join one. That's not what NikeTalk is about.

The problem is that you guys aren't looking at this as an extension of an existing rule, but as a "new" rule that's taking away a "freedom" you once enjoyed. You NEVER had the right to troll our forums. Whatever legitimacy the use of this term MAY have enjoyed - that argument is now dead. It's OBVIOUS how people are using it now. They're using it to troll and we have to respond to that. Everyone is willing to agree that it's obnoxious so see the same childish jokes run into the ground and watching kids endlessly regurgitate the same punchlines. That's the case here, but it's not just an annoying gif - but a loaded term that's being ROUTINELY used to engage in race baiting.

In that sense, it's even worse than the infantile NY>LA nonsense.  If you think YOU'RE the exception and that YOU'RE using it in a witty, clever way that others aren't, you're only lying to yourself.  You're just as annoying.

If you're gonna whine and pout because you think you deserve the "right" to annoy others, just leave already.  Nobody here will mourn your loss and I hope the irony of complaining about people being "extra sensitive" isn't lost on you when you're up in arms over something as trivial as the ability to troll on a message board.

It's a judgment call.  We're not going to come to a unanimous decision on this with all 80,000 of our unique visitors today.  When we do something as hard to complain about as giving our ad revenue away to charity, people still find reasons to gripe about that.  It's not realistic to expect that you'll agree with every single decision that gets made here, but that doesn't negate our right to make decisions affecting the community.  At the end of the day, somebody has to make the call.  I think what this really boils down to is that a lot of you are just salty because you're not the one making the decision and, if that's the case, you have the freedom to change that.  You can start your own board.  We do better than most.  We'll sit here and discuss everything, explain the rationale, answer questions, and practically coddle users about every little change and that's STILL not going to be enough for some of you - and, in those cases, nothing short of giving you dictatorial power over the whole of the community would satisfy you.  Unfortunately, if you want to be a part of NikeTalk you'll just have to suck it up and accept the fact that, although we read and value all of the feedback we receive, we're not obligated to act on ALL of it - nor CAN we, because much of it is contradictory.  What you want, someone else doesn't want.  By visiting NIKETALK instead of some other community, you're accepting the leadership team that we have in place.  If you accept a scholarship to play ball at Georgetown, you should expect to run the Princeton offense and accept Coach Thompson's vision of the team.  You can have some say, but someone has to make the final call and if you can't live with that then you need to find a situation where you can be a player/coach.  The game isn't going to stop because you're not 100% satisfied with the play that was drawn up on the sideline.

Back in the fall of 1999, we started our own message board because we were willing to accept the hard work and responsibility associated with managing safe, friendly, respectful forums where our fellow sports/sneaker fans could communicate without dealing with all of the petty insults, racist hate speech, pornography, impostors, and so on that plagued the anarchic message boards of that time.  If you want a forum without rules, go visit a forum without rules.  That's not our mission at NikeTalk.

With all due respect Meth but NT seems to be full of contradictions.

Btw I found out neighborhood vermin is a banned word. Typed it all out and saw stars.

guess people abused it. That's why we can't have nice things.

We aren't talking about petty insults, racist hate speech, pornography, or impostors here man.

You're trying to ban the correct use of a word.
If the OP is guilty of hypocrisy, that's his problem.  My position rests on a principle, not a person.
If the chief of police tells you that killing is wrong, then goes out and commits murder, does that mean that killing is okay?   The message and the messenger aren't interchangeable.  We've banned staff members in the past to preserve the integrity of the community.  One user's mistakes won't negate the ideals this community was founded on.

If you think that using "animals" in a racially inflammatory way is correct, that's your problem - but it won't be ours.
there's gotta be at least 6-8 that you'd look at and be like..."why is 'banana' banned"?and then it turns out that somebody thought banana was racist
People could make the same argument about "ninja."  We don't want racial slurs on the board.  When kids try to get cute about it and use substitutions, we have to close those loopholes.
If a year from now people are able to use the word 'correctly' and in the proper context - FINE.  I don't care.  It's the faddish, troll usage of the word that has to stop, and people are OBVIOUSLY doing it because of the connotations it carries.

It's the trolling behavior that we really have a problem with here.  So, for the time being, we're putting an end to this trend before the problem gets any worse.  If you want to risk your membership over it, that's your call.

As Meth said you can play naive all you want. Unfortunately the trolling and race baiting is gonna come to an end

That's all there is to it.  People are trying to get cute and justify trolling and I'm not having it.  We all know what it is.

Who's he killing? If he's killing someone he must have a damn good reason. Is he shooting a hostage taker? Killing would still be wrong, but the situation warranted his actions.
(And you said killing, then murder, they're two different things. I carried the killing idea through this line of thinking.)

Racially inflammatory is a matter of perception. I don't believe there are any truly racist people on NT, some might have messed up ideas but never full racist.
People were getting hurt over animal being used for a human being that acted as if they lived outside. That chick that jumped on the counter at BK WAS acting like an animal.
In that same thread I posted a video of a white woman at a McDonalds acting like an animal because they were out of nuggets

If you see a racial thing, that's YOUR problem. Imposing your morals and opinions on the board is a good way to make this place lame real quick. (Not saying you're lame, just that imposing your....you get it)

I know. Meth didn't literally spend an entire Sat typing that up.

I just found it a bit ironic.

My other point was more important. So why'd you decide to highlight this one? This is my point exactly.

Troll responses or perceived troll responses ( I can assure you my response was not "trollish") can be ignored but they're not.

There are always a handful of serious threads in General  but they get no love and die within a  few hours.

NT GENERAL is a troll forum. Period. It's the furthest thing from serious.

How serious can you get with a large portion of your demo being teens and early 20's?

method man really got caught up in the moment and let himself get suckered by a hypocrite. then again, the double standards on this site dictates that certain members of a one group receive less scrutiny when they're the ones dishing out the epithets and racially charged entendres. go ahead and deny it
Sadly, some people only seem to care when certain groups are denigrated.  So, for example, they'll only report posts if a specific group is targeted or they'll bend over backwards to justify racist behavior in some situations, but not others - like, say, if the Spanish National team takes a racist photograph in anticipation of the 2008 Beijing games.
Unfortunately, that sort of bias can manifest itself in the form of reporting disparities.  Our staff tries its best to respond to user reports.  Sometimes, people cry 'wolf' too often and lose credibility, but, generally speaking, if certain types of offenses are reported more, then, for that reason alone, they attract greater scrutiny.  That doesn't make the staff or the policy biased.

With all due respect Meth but NT seems to be full of contradictions.

Believe it or not, that post almost certainly spared me a good deal of back and forth.  That entire line of argumentation was dropped afterwards.   This is just mop up work.
MOST of this just seems to stem from boredom.  It's not a "rights" issue and, really, this is only going to affect you if you INSIST on perpetuating a tired, obnoxious fad.  Why people are so up in arms in defense of trolling is beyond me.  Go watch the Spurs game.

the guy who originally started using it was trying to make a point. but people didnt get it. then others hopped on the train and saying it to offend people or just for the lulz.

And that's exactly why we need to pull the plug on it.  When users are INTENTIONALLY offending others just to get a cheap laugh we're going to take action.  It's textbook trolling.  If a gang of vigilantes goes around beating people with sacks full of doorknobs, then, yeah, you'd be well served to arrest those people.  What you guys are doing amounts to staging a mass protest over the "right" to stuff doorknobs into a sack.

It's the act of using the object or tool (words, in our case) in a harmful way that we're objecting to.  Saying, "penguins are my favorite animals" is different than posting "animals :smh" in response to a thread about Miami Heat fans just to be obnoxious.  Using this word in this way is what I have a problem with.

Sometimes, you try to use a light touch and let these trends die on their own, but this isn't just "NY>LA."  We're putting a stop to it now before it gets any worse.

I ignore trolls and do not respond to them. It's been users like me who've been pointing out that the quality of General has been steadily declining over the past 2-3 years now. No on seemed to care and then it became kind of obvious why. Look at your demographic. Teens and early 20's. What do you expect? The best thing would be to either outright ban troll threads (which is non-sensical) or create more serious forums (econ, politics, science, etc or "SERIOUS" forum
laugh.gif
) and let the trolls play in General. If it dies out then let it die out good. If not, that's good also. Compartmentalize the trolls because your demographic says they're here to stay.

- hey, im not defending the word at all. just pointing out that the banning of the word, the discussions within this thread, is what the OP was going for initially by purposely using the word every chance he got.

......to call him a hypocrite (as a gang of others did in this thread), shows that they clearly missed what he was trying to do.

Seriously though Meth? That has absolutely, positively no relation to what we're talking about.

You're being too sensitive, just in this situation. You're usually right!
Every time I've seen you come into a thread and post a thesis YOU SHUT IT DOWN.
This time, this one time, you're trying to impose your feelings/opinions, on the entire community.
You're wrong, no disrespect.

I can stuff doorknobs in a sack til the cows come home, so long as I don't hit anyone with them.
