Apple TV or Roku ?

Have they jailbroken the 3rd version of Apple TV yet though? Last I checked they hadn't, which was like 4-6 weeks ago.

Also curious. I just bought someone an Apple TV but I always see the Roku for cheaper.

Yeah I know, but those go for like 200 bucks now. I cant justify that purchase personally. Especially for a unit that I don't know how many hours its already clocked.

I have both, and here are my pros/cons......

appletv (v3, the one out now)

PROS

- great when mirroring with your ipad/iphone since whatever you can do on your phone like vids/photos will be airplay'd to your big screen.  What i love is playing HD music videos from VEVO and putting it on the bigscreen when you have parties or fam over.

- impulsive buying of movies.  pretty much just 1click and your off watching an HD movie.  Stream hasn't buffered on me once unlike Roku (very rare, but it happens).

- Youtube.

CONS

- basic default apps. no appstore, so you can't download anything new (as of right now, sources say that its coming)

- even tho you can mirror/airplay your iphone....there are restrictions.  case and point nba league pass mobile.....my broke *** thought that i can buy $40.00 league pass mobile and airplay it onto my big screen......NOPE

- no dlna, network streaming, usb storage, sd storage, etc streaming

===========================

ROKU

PROS

- lots of channels.  including PRIVATE channels which you can find around the net that has access to all kinds of free goodies

- has all the major streaming apps, netflix, amazon, hulu, HBO go which on appletv does not (amazon, hbo, etc)

- you can STREAM via usb! download a movie then just stick that badboy on the roku and your set

- has older connection options such as rca, where appletv comes with just HDMI

CONS:

- the looks are straight out of atari. GUI sux

- the streams aren't the best. sometimes its a crapshoot if you your getting HD or Standard def

- not much else

OVERALL

It all depends on the end-user. If you are already in an apple ecosystem, I say having appletv is a MUST.  Honestly, its almost a party when you start airplaying your photos and videos from your iphone, then you have a friend or family member hijack and start streaming their stuff (has to be already on your wifi).

If you plan on streaming YOUR content such as movies.....i say go ROKU! Has all the options to subscribe to movies (netflix, amazon prime, etc) and you still have option to attach your own drive to it.  Plus by being a little saavy, you can get free movies, pr0n, tvshows by using the PRIVATE channels.

Good luck, and hope this helps.

^^^Was just going to say that. Apple TV is only better if you have other Apple devices. That is more or less the better parts of it, so you can play your music, share iTunes video and music all with little to no ease. If that isn't a big deal, then go Roku cause it does practically everything the Apple TV does and yes, the best part is you can download and play a video on it while just plugging it in to the USB.

I have a Playstation though and I like it better only cause I still play video games and it allows me to hook up a harddrive to it.

damn bro! i just looked into this. atv 1&2 are both 200+ on ebay. apple tv 3 doesn't seem like its going to be jailbroken as it lacks components from the previous 2. idk much about the roku but if you cant get an atv 1 or 2 then the 3 isn't worth it imo

Just checked Craigslist and there's a guy selling a JB'd 2 for 90 bucks. Think I'm about to jump on it.

hop on tha broski and enjoy the endless amount of movies and tv shows. you can cancel cable now :smokin

plus with a jailbroken apple tv you can stream stuff from your pc or mac as well and you can even download the movies youre streaming from xbmc and save them for viewing later on.

if everything you watch is on itunes / you're in the apple ecosystem, then apple TV, BUT the 2013 rumor is that Apple may be coming out with an actual Apple-branded TV, so those apple TV units may go the way of the dodo bird.

i went to get an apple tv and noticed the was a considerable lag when doing a mirror with iphone or streaming an HD movie. couldn't get my self to cop.

I'm really slow when it comes to these things.

I have a Note 2 and a Mac. Would it make more sense to get a jailbroken ATV 2 or a Roku?

Also, how can I watch all the shows I regularly watch? I'm horrible at this. Please help me out

roku + hulu plus.

and hbo go, if you already have hbo.

Get a WD live. Its like a jailbroken appletv in that, it plays EVERYTHING you will throw at. Its easy to configure with samba shares(windows network files), and plays well with linux nas. Its so dope. I have a jailbroken appletv 2, but the wd live is just as good, minus the ability to stream media from the web(XBMC on Appletv 2).
A wdlive, goes for around 60 or less on ebay. Honestly, if you camp for an AppleTV2, you will find one for 100 fairly quickly. At least one sells daily.

PS Roku stinks. It doesnt stream from the web, only plays certain files types, and doesnt play well with network shares. Not worth a purchase imo.
