Vancouver woman charged for throwing coffee at Asian shop manager begins trial​



  • Astrid Maria Secreve is facing a mischief charge alongside her ex-husband Jean-Jacque Berthiaume for allegedly hurling coffee and racial slurs at an Asian Canadian coffee shop manager on March 29, 2021.
  • The incident reportedly began when the pair ignored the shop’s COVID-19 guidelines and were consequently asked by the manager to change seats.
  • Instead of complying, Berthiaume allegedly poured his mocha on the floor, while Secreve allegedly threw a cup of coffee at the manager.
  • The pair’s trial, which was originally scheduled in April, began on Thursday.
  • Secreve also made headlines in April after being filmed using an anti-Chinese slur toward a CTV News crew that included a camera operator of Asian descent.

Woman struck by stray bullets while sleeping in Oakland home; daughter calls for increased gun control​



  • A woman in her 60s was sleeping alongside her husband in their Little Saigon, California, residence when she was hit three times by stray bullets on Aug. 17.
  • According to the victim’s daughter, she still has multiple bullet fragments inside her body.

S. Korean President Yoon proposes new ministry to protect Korean Americans from hate crimes​



  • On Tuesday, President Yoon met with overseas Koreans in New York City and vowed to increase efforts to protect Koreans and Korean Americans against hate crimes.
  • He announced a bill aimed at establishing a ministry dedicated to overseas Koreans is expected to be passed by the National Assembly.
  • Earlier the same day, President Yoon joined the 77th United Nations General Assembly, delivering his keynote speech at the U.N. headquarters.
  • Yoon also met with U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres regarding nuclear weapons and North Korea.
  • During his time in New York, Yoon will continue to attend the U.N. General Assembly and hold various summits, including meetings with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and U.S. President Joe Biden.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol promised to increase efforts to protect Koreans from hate crimes, placing emphasis on support for overseas Koreans.

Man arrested for choking and beating teen Asian students in Philadelphia subway​



  • Torey Egypt Grier, 27, is facing assault and related charges for allegedly attacking two Asian high school students in Philadelphia’s subway system earlier this month.
  • The victims, aged 17 and 13, were on their way to school when the unprovoked attacks took place, according to reports.
  • On Sept. 9, Grier allegedly grabbed the 17-year-old student by the throat and slammed her to the ground.
  • Four days later, he allegedly punched the 13-year-old student multiple times.
  • Investigators are still looking into possible hate crime charges.
 

Man arrested for unprovoked attack on Asian woman in San Francisco Chinatown​



  • Alejandro Garcia, 30, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly shoving a 53-year-old Asian woman in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
  • The victim, who fell and hit her head on the ground, reported the unprovoked attack herself and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
  • Garcia was booked on an aggravated assault charge and is being held without bail at San Francisco County Jail.

  • Seunghun of K-pop boy group CIX revealed he was mugged while in New York City earlier this week.
