Black Culture Discussion Thread

You CAN control your own playlist and music YOU search for.

I have a playlist with damn near 3000 songs of MY choice.

Try again

Even my CD booklets and sleeves from the past are albums that I CHOSE to buy. Ya’ll love excusing behavior. We all have free will.

My brother (15 years younger than me) didn’t like when I played Mobb Deep. Guess what. I didn’t GAF. Get your own car, play what you want.

Meanwhile he was listening to people like Famous Dex and Playboi Carti. That’s his prerogative

Yup. Now go back and read what I said.

“There’s good food around, you just got to search for it!”. Right, but wouldn’t it be cool if you didn’t have to search for it and it was readily on shelves?

🤔 i think one would have a difficult time proving direct harm but let’s accept that premise as true, what should be done? should the free speech of music be legislated such that certain themes are not permissible??

good analogy, we know ‘food deserts’ as a real phenomenon & there is not, as far i know, a conspiratorial motive to why they exist…rather there are a set of circumstantial, economic, & social issues that make ‘better’ food options less available & maybe even less desirable, such the the negatives compound…that ‘constriction/restriction’ of choice is result & not an aim; there isn’t anything necessarily that structural stopping the ‘better’ options rooting themselves in such communities besides the belief (perhaps this is falsely so) that the consumer can’t afford and/or doesn’t value these options

generally it is true that folk cannot choose what isn’t on offer, so in that way the market definitely imposes influence in that way…still the goal is that of, be it eventual or immediate, profit as such consumers are not passive & there are many instances of businesses & whole industries failing as a result of not seeing shifts in consumer sentiment/taste
Nothing I said has to do with free speech. I never said the music shouldn't be made nor listened to. I said its intentionally the only thing being pushed.

A lot of Black communities came about from redlining and intentional disinvestment. That structure is why some of them have food deserts now. That's your conspiratorial motive (are you Black or American by the way?).

For you to say that "there isn't anything necessarily that structural stopping the 'better' options" kind of proves my point; it's a choice to push and invest in it when you know the harm.

i'd disagree w/the assertion that it's the only thing being pushed, and combining intentionally & only is an interesting wording in this case...🤔 what does that mean? as opposed to what other thing(s)?

good point, pushing folks to certain parts of cities/towns & redlining definitely have resulted in many negative and in many cases were done with explicitly negative intentions...still i would say this is different from saying that the intention was 'to create food deserts' and even more different than saying the intention of promoting music and/or media that could be considered degenerate is to harm black people, especially considering that a substantial amount of those paying to consume said music, arguably most, aren't black people 🤷🏿‍♂️ (😅i always say, facetiously, i'm kinda black, born & raised in the u.s., parents from west africa)

how so? the goal is profiteering not humanitarian aid 🤷🏿‍♂️ maybe the 'they' are just pushing & investing in what they think will fill their coffers best without concern for the negative consequences, as it isn't necessarily 'their' problem...there is an argument that this likely results in the same outcome(s) but i think the ascribing intention is counterproductive 🤷🏿‍♂️ the problems of certain communities won't be changed by addressing entertainment media

“ascribing intention” — I didn’t do this. If I eat a double cheeseburger for every meal because it tastes good, I’m still promoting bad health even if that wasn’t my intention.

Just goes to show how many dudes are tricks out here. I’m hearing dudes singing and playing it just as the females.
I seen a clip of a black cop doing a fruity dance on social reels. Might be mocking his future suspects, but its ugly out here.

Word to the wise yall be careful there while doing a any type of shopping.

🤔🤷🏿‍♂️even tho you aren’t explicitly verbatim actually stating intentionality you kinda are implying it, by asserting you eating a double cheeseburger, for every meal because it tastes good = you ‘promoting bad health’…even if a fast food joint paid you to do eat them burger & post how much you luuuh eating them, burgers are not inherently unhealthy (there are folk that are healthy & only eat burgers); tho bad health may indeed be the consequence/result for some/you

if i’m a restauranteur that is deciding what kind of food to offer such that patrons are want to return & spend their money, i have to be selling what they want to some extent & me doing so & advertising that is not promoting bad health…while there definitely are systemic things that confound that simple individualistic logic as it applies to the existence of food deserts & the choices folk make as a result of somewhat limited options, the music business seems much more straightforward, as it is much more formulaic & derivative than the food business is

i guess the question is, putting aside ‘intentions,’ is there a ‘responsibility’ to not offer things that are/can be considered negative due to the possible results? time ago man were getting got for jordans & starter jackets, even if you were to believe there was a larger ‘conspiratorial motive’ to that happening what level of complicity, ‘consideration,’ ‘fault,’ and/or malice would you place onto those individual companies? is music any different/same??

I’m not implying anything. The original point was that they make money and promote destruction. That’s what I agreed with.

They intentionally push and invest in that content because it easy to rehash and make money, even when they know it’s harmful. That’s different than intentionally trying to be destructive, which I never said they do.

Everything else you keep bringing up about free speech, responsibility, etc. is a different argument.

:lol :lol :lol :lol

God forbid a black man hands them their *** every time they try him

Being smart is only a disease…. When it’s a black dude :rollin

And it’s not even about book smarts. He’s just smart enough to know when they’re trying to play him for a fool

What polarizing takes has Jaylen Brown had that makes an organization feel that way?
They’re just trying to cover their asses for making a bad trade after they couldn’t get Giannis.

Now I totally understand thinking he’s just generally annoying. His whole Olympics/Nike conspiracy, live streaming, saying this was his favorite season ever after getting bounced in the first round :lol But yeah, nothing, IMO, that’s worth trading him for draft picks.

given the economics of the 1st/2nd curtains of the nba it’s not that surprising that they’d trade him on a high point but you’d think it would have brought in a better return and not to an in conference rival 😮‍💨

Division rival that just bounced them out the playoffs. Hard for me to believe nobody else was offering a better return.

That old head gon gladly blast it with a cigar in his mouth. I know Floyd mad he's going through some financial **** right now.

Listened to "spend dat" :lol today. Reminds me of "smile" by Lil Duval. Some people get more enlightened (woke) as they get older and see things through a different lens. I don't find spend dat catchy at all tho :rollin possibly because I find her voice irritating even though she got a fat ***.

But the person that made this a talking point isn't one of those people. That person BEEN "woke."

So when folks were dissing HER saying people like her are too worried about what the man thinks, I just laughed.

Now this is nasty work. Type of **** make me put my hate for Celtics players aside.

This is so incredibly racist I’m surprised they let some bull **** like this even leak as a rumor
When "they" call us monkeys/"chimping out", remember this:
