I have my class ring from high school and wear it almost everyday, every now and then someone an alumni notices it and we'll have conversation, it's a good way to network

I only wear it a few times a year, but it's a nice thing to slip on to remember all the hard work that you put in.
And you can't look at your diploma to remember that?

Real talk, my diploma is still in the envelope unopened.

A Central State ring though...

I sassed the ring and the concept of the ring. I didn't sass the person that wants the ring.

You missed my sarcasm buddy, I do enjoy and agree with your views on Kevin Garnett though.

I'd rather buy a nice watch for the $500+ for a class ring.

Speaking of jewelry, why do women insist on spending several grand on some ring or whatever that is so small it's barely visible? A nice watch trumps any ring IMO. Class rings are corny, unless you went to a well-known school.

i bought mine. i've worn it exactly twice. once for my graduation photos and another time to my graduation. that said, i don't regret it at all and i dont think of it as a waste of money

$500 does not buy you a nice watch. Comparing a class ring to a watch is silly. The most you will spend on a traditional class ring at this point is $1000.

That's a strong assumption to make.
I think most people who buy those rings are students who loved their school and proud of attending there.  No shame in that.  Some might see it as a symbol of all their hard work and accomplishment in earning their degree.

I have two different commemoration rings, one from high school and one from my time in the Marine Corps.

Neither of them mean much to me but they mean the world to my mother and father respectively. There's pictures and diplomas and all sorts of knick-knacks that people mark their accomplishments but the ring just sort of outclasses the rest. (Probably because of w clever marketing plan, word to DeBeers). But in the real world the only people that I see wearing them either:
1. Recall it as the greatest thing they ever accomplished.
2. Use it to cash in on the association. "Networking". Which is cool during the interview or your first year, but after awhile its a little cheesy.

It is a great conversation starter but I'd say that there are many (less expensive) ways to advertise your association and its really up to you whether its worth it to YOU.

It is and I apologize for saying it or if it offended you.
However did preface it by saying it was my own opinion, not something I could back up objectively if you read my original post.

Never gotten one and nor do I want one. All I want from my school is that diploma with my name on it.

yeah i got one and i enjoy having it. don't wear it often but it sure is nice to have. 14k gold and its far from shoddy materials as some one previously mentioned.

chances are you will either lose it or forgot about it. i haven't paid attention to my cap and gown since i wore it back in may. a class ring seems like it's all hype.

this.  Some of the responses are surprising.

That said, I could use the $$$ for something better + I barely wear jewelry.

I have mine, cost a little over 1200 but at Texas it's a pretty big deal. There is a ring ceremony and everything, one of the things you get as you're close to graduation. I'm proud of mine and it is a good conversation starter.

THIS. Not getting one when I graduate in May either.

Graduated from CAL and I did not get a ring; I think it is a waste of money

Not a college ring, But felt like sharing,

I had to make the same decision this year, I'm Graduating from High School and my parents wanted to buy me a ring,

It's about 300-500 for something pointless and useless than I won't even wear, I know people that lose them all the time, My dad has found a few rings at his job over the years (both from HS and College),

If you're down to the watch and ring, Just go with the watch. If it was me I would just save the money for something more useful later on.
