Thanks

Why HP if you don't mind me asking? They make pretty looking laptops, but they are dead last in reliability, 40% worse than the top 2 companies where areAsus and Sony. I have an extra new in box Dell Studio 1535 (www.dell.com/studio it's the 849$ one minus dedicated graphic or the 699 one plus 9 cellbattery), core 2 duo processor (t6400), hdmi out, wxga hd screen, still fully covered by warranty as I never registered it.

But, here. I would copy and paste the best bang for your buck ones, but no mouse.

Do you plan on making this like a PC replacement or actually lugging it around with you? Because 17 inches is HUGE! I'm on a 17 inch Studio 1737 now. Itweighs about 8lbs too which isn't heavy in general, but for a laptop it is.

Here's a nice Asus right at 6bills, core2, 4g ram, 512mb gpu, hdmi, http://www.bhphotovideo.c...EG&A=details&Q=#featuresGet on Internet Explorer, go to www.bing.com/cashback and search for "d5000" and go to the bh site through there, then purchase and get 4% cashback

SquareTrade, which broke out the warranty claims of its customers by manufacturers, said that Apple took the No. 4 spot, behind Asus, Toshiba, and Sony, which held No. 1 through No. 3, respectively. However, Apple beat the laptop brands most often used by businesses: Dell, Lenovo, and Hewlett-Packard, which came in at Nos. 5, 6, and 9, respectively. Acer came in at No. 7 and Gateway (now owned by Acer) at No. 8. HP, which shipped more notebooks in the past year than any other PC maker, had a significantly higher failure rate than the others, with a two-year failure rate greater than 15 percent and a three-year projected failure rate of 25.6 percent.

The little bit of brandwhore in me won't let me roll with an ASUS.

Maybe I'll go with Sony or Toshiba.

We've had our HP desktop since '05 and it's been solid, didn't know the laptops were that %%$$$+.

I'm a senior in HS now so i'll prolly take this to school with me in the fall.

17" is huge so I might settle for 15 or something, I don't care if it's big or 1lb heavier than others but I can't get down with 14"screens.

If I go with 17", I"ll probably get a netbook down the line to tote around.

fam, thank you for the find. you saved me the trouble of lookin for a budget laptop for my girl's mom. the specs on these things go hard and at a reallycompetitive price.

That's my plan too, you can get netbooks around 230 new right now, but the same reliability report talks about how they all suck (and my Asus1005HA I ebay'd would agree), so I'll just get a slimmer laptop. Here's an HP with dual core (not Core2Duo though) and free HP All in One printerfor 489$

http://www.bestbuy.com/si...211002&skuId=9553896 here's a Toshiba w AMD Athlon Dual core (don't know what their equivalent of Core2 is), for450

Take the 110 or 150 remaining and get an iPod or blu ray or something.

If that's your plan, i would recommend that you get a 12-14" laptop just for the portability factor. I had a 15" in college and itwas a pain. Currently I have a 14" Acer and connect it to my 23" monitor to watch videos and do other dual-monitor activities. It's greathaving a smaller laptop and for $100-150, you can get a nice big monitor to connect your laptop to. That's the best way to roll in college with 1) limitedspace 2) having to carry a computer around campus everyday.

considering my desktop is 17" i guess it would be a bit huge to lug around all day

looks like i'm now looking for something:

under 15"
under $600
250GB+ HD
4GB+ RAM

is HP really that *+*@*$. i figure i'll get another one halfway through my college career anyway

nicfro, listen to datznasty. I sell laptops at best buy, Asus should be your choice. Actually they make parts for hp, apple computers....yes apple, and sonyps3. I'm picking the UL series since those are related to the macbook pro. If your not in a rush buy after christmas, since new intel processors are beingreleased i3 & i5.

i've had 2 HP computers ..both have lasted 7 yrs +

i just got an HP laptop with very good specs for a very good price (under 600, Intel dual core2 T6600, 4g ddr2 ram, 320g harddrive, etc etc)

if you use your PC the right way, there's no reason to think that it won't be reliable

everyone has different experiences, i wouldn't let a graph steer u away from a brand ..just my 2 cents ... (i was this close to getting a samsung today, but this one was too good to pass up)

futureshop/bestbuy can also optomize your pc - get rid of all the junk that comes on your pc...HP is known for the most useless stuff on it, so it's wiseto get it optomized (usually runs 20% faster than out of the box) and they give u a "restore" disk, which u need if u ever wanted to store ur pc tofactory settings one day
