External hard drives really dont need drivers, is their any message you get when you do plug the usb cable in ?. If its windows notifying you that it does not recognize the drive it could either be a software issue with your OS or a hardware issue with the hard drive alone. Is the hard drive a powered ?, if it is make sure its powered. Also try another USB cable sometimes damage to the cable will get you that message.

Also a good question did you format your computer with a recovery disc or an OEM windows disc ?
