Covid-19 Essential Workers Check-in Thread

for those of us deemed essential, post your title/ occupation

do you get hazard pay?

whats the commute like? (Cali, ATL highways?)

whats the mood at the gig?

are you salty you arent at home or glad to be working?

a guy i work with is extra heated about us working. came in last week speaking French saying WE shouldnt be here.

ive been in the military, worked for FEMA, and off shore oil rigs, i like working support jobs. dude talking to the wrong person with that one.

another cat told me he’s jealous of his girl because she gets to stay home.

anyway, IT support for Blue Cross Blue Shield

what say you?
IT Specialist

Only get time and a half when we come in the office (only 3 of us fully cleared to go in the office including myself)

Commute was cake the last two weeks but yesterday had too many idiots on the road (DC to Va)

Barley anyone in the office so it's pretty peaceful but all the people working from home going crazy because they don't have in person support is annoying.

I actual like being in the office for the pay and it's pretty chill. The peaceful morning drive isn't bad either

Investigator for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. So far certain departments have been given time off if they don't have much going on. Departments like mine that center around legal situations & the COs all have had to continue working. Of course, we're all required to have our temperatures checked everyday once we make it to work. Most of us are indifferent about the situation. On one hand, I would like to stay at home because I'm a state employee which means I would still get paid. On the other hand, I don't mind being at work because of the amount of cases that come through my department (we specialize in helping inmates so we get around 200 cases per month. Staying home for just one week would have us backed up and I personally hate when that happens).

Commute is pretty good since most of the people that work here live no more than 3-15 minutes away and being that it's Mississippi, we don't have to worry about a lot of traffic or interacting with a lot of people in the area.
I don't think anybody is getting paid extra money as of right now. Of course, there are no known cases of the virus in this area yet.

oh wow, i lived in Biloxi on and off for years

Military
then FEMA
later as a Civil Service employee

where are you?

Ecommerce in an industry that supports infrastructure. Thankful to still be working, but still sort wish we'd shut it down, because I don't know if my co-workers are taking the precautions that I am. Luckily I have a pretty isolated office. I'm just being really mindful of what I touch.

DPH for City and County of SF.

Commute has been amazing. 25 minutes from Richmond to SF.

Everything has actually been slower since this whole thing started. Not as much non emergency injuries/sickness coming through the EMERGENCY Dept. Almost all appointments cancelled in favor of telephone appointments.

That said, still shortstaffed. Put up +100 hours last week.

I work for HSA. Gotta be prepared since we are also disaster service workers!

Work in the headquarters of a financial institution in the mortgage department. All of the executives and people who get paid more all working from home. Everyone in the building who is hourly all got $2 an hour more since they have to come in and have no option to work from home. Still have over 250 people in the office each day.

The only plus has been no traffic and no line at Chick-fil-A for breakfast.

I’m essential but we’re not working for another month and a half.

I work for a paving company but the essential part is we supply aggregates to the power company. I guess they don’t need any rock because I’m not working and that’s fine.

it’s not hazardous, don’t even have to get out of the truck.

surgical resident in the NE, less cases, every one is testy. Can't even get a mask without jumping through hoops. I like how they call us "heroes" but in reality it feels like we got sent into a war zone with no back up. But i'm lucky i still have a job and can't imagine how some families are coping with no income

ksteezy ksteezy how the hell you do that? That’s so hard. 16 x 7 days a weeks

Back to back doubles, I’m burnt out.

You sleeping at the hospital??

They should give y’all place to sleep walking distance or inside the building.

Whole Foods Cashier. Asked manager for a face mask, told me tie a du rag on my chin. Can I sue?

You can refuse to work under those conditions, I'm going to be honest a $2 an hour raise at 40 hours a week is only (80 more dollars) to risk my health................ plus more stress and strain.

I have worked in the grocery industry in the past and they don't care about their workers they just want bodies in the building so they don't have to work as hard.

My whole shift changed. Switched from graveyard to morning shifts. Went from working 5.5 to 10 hour shifts

Work at a Pool distribution.
many Pool cleaners/ techs rely on us for sanitation of pool.

at first I was mad we were open. Like we in contact with so many customers and touc cash.
But then seeing how many don’t have jobs and are struggling I’m glad we open low key.
But still seeing so Amy people every day is sucks.
Live in Cali. 405 freeway is beautiful. Drive from Culver City to SCV is beautiful.

I'm grateful to be employed during this crisis. My commute is 5-7 minutes and I work 40 hrs 1 week and receive paid admin leave the other week when I'm on call. I'm a psychotherapist for correctional facilities. There have been several officers and inmates who have contracted the virus. Some medical and badge staff are pretty salty that mental health staff are getting paid leave and generally people are not freaking out being that majority of people are not wearing masks. However I did interview a client who drank cleaning solution to get rid of the virus. I'm being mindful to wear gloves and a mask at work when interacting with clients.

Building maintenance man(porter) in Queens Fresh Meadows, NYC. We are not getting hazard pay. I work & live on the same residential property so my commute is the same @ 2 minutes walk lol. The mood is mix, some workers want to be home others don't mind showing up. I personally am very thankful to God that I have a job to show upto & a paycheck to collect. I cannot imagine a no income situation, these bills not goin to pay themselves. Rumor going around one of the employees & his entire family has tested positive for covid19. Upon asking our shop steward if they were going to disinfect the breakroom knowing he had been inside, we were told "no, it'll be fine, don't worry"....pure ****ing ignorance. It's ok as I don't clock in from the breakroom & use my phone to do it but still. My job duties are maintaining the laundry room, collecting recycles from the recycle bins in my tower amongst other stuff. As the job is about maintenance I ALWAYS wear gloves but have started to use a face mask as well regardless if it helps or not. I think having it on is better than not having anything on at all. We have seen a HUGE increase in sanitizing entrance/exit points like door handles and such, laundry baskets, elevator call buttons and the buttons panel on the inside, vending machine buttons. Everybody stay safe & keep washing your hands. Shoutout to all my local 32BJ'ers in here

Surprised to see so many I.t and admin related people post in here, those are the main positions that are easy to work from home, assuming of course your company has the infrastructure (some sort of vpn, Microsoft Lync/Teams, etc.) I was surprised at how well my company took care of us, they sent us home first of almost all the contracting companies on base, didn't wait on Base to decide (because they are dragging their feet and not at all caring about anyone's safety, hell they still got the gyms open). I was brand new so I don't have a computer or network account or anything yet so I just have to txt the project manager on Mondays and tell him I am going to study for a cert

Good luck to everyone and be safe. Think about yourself and your family first, no job or potential extra $2 an hour is worth it imo. That's why amazon, instacart, whole foods, wal mart, Starbucks, Targets, and hospitals refusing to let their nurses wear masks are experiencing mass strikes/walkouts.

I have an admin type job for the Department of Corrections, but working at home would be almost impossible for my particular department. We specialize in helping inmates deal with any negative situation they might have while being behind bars. That requires they write up letters explaining their situations to us so we can do the investigative work required to help solve their problems.
