I wasn't expecting that acting performance..
He got a pity Oscar's for that since he got robbed for his role in The Hurricane. He's lucky Russell Crowe dissed the Academy Awards that year or else Russell would have pulled a Tom Hanks.

- Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad
- Deniro, Pesci, Liotta in Goodfellas
- Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs Of New York
- Jim Carrey in Truman Show
- Russell Crowe in Gladiator
- Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting
- Tim Robins, Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption
- Tom Hanks in anything but mainly Cast Away and Green Mile
- Sean Penn in I am Sam
- Bradley Cooper in Limitless

Many others that I can't think of right now.

Al Pacino was untouchable in the 70s. Panic in Needle Park, both Godfathers (II especially), Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, ...And Justice For All. In a decade of many great performances (Hoffman with Kramer vs. Kramer and All the President's Men, Nicholson with Chinatown and One Flew Over the ****oo's Nest, John Cazale in Godfather II and the Deer Hunter, De Niro with Godfather II and Taxi Driver, just to name a FEW of the great acting performances of the decade), Pacino was consistent in his method.
That Brando would be nominated for Best Actor in Godfather I is understandable (though I wonder how someone can watch the film and determine that Vito is the lead male character, not Michael), but losing the award to Art Carney is an embarrassment. Often the Academy attempts to reward actors later in their career for roles that are strong but not what they are best known for, which is the case with Pacino and Scent of a Woman, but it's impossible to live down that kind of shame. Who today remembers Carney in Harry and Tonto the way people idolize Pacino's portrayal of Michael?

In any case, after all that ranting I would nominate Godfather II and Serpico as Al Pacino's best roles of that decade.

EDIT: Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption always impresses me whenever I watch it.

This changes as much as my favorite album but right now I'll say

Dustin Hoffman - The Graduate
Dustin Hoffman - Marathon Man

If you haven't seen either of these please check them out...I believe they're both on Netflix streaming.

I'll leave alone the older classic performances and stick to recent ones.

Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood
Michael Fassbender - Shame
Ryan Gosling - Half Nelson, Blue Valentine
Mickey Rourke - The Wrestler
Colin Firth - A Single Man, The King's Speech

Johnny Depp- Blow
Pacino- Scarface
Ledger- The Dark Knight
Freeman- Shawshank Redemption
Rourke- The Wrestler

Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds is def one of the best performances in recent years.

A few that come to mind:

DeNiro - Raging Bull, Taxi Driver
Samul L Jackson - Pulp Fiction
Johnny Depp - Edward Scissorhands
Al Pacino - Dog Day afternoon
Denzel Washington - Malcolm X
James Stuart - Vertigo
Heath Leder - The Dark Knight
Marlon Brando - The Godfather

But Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull is my top pick.

he got JIPPED for his role Malcolm X and him winning it for Training Day is like Halle winning hers for Monster Ball.
