I've been having an issue with my Toshiba laptop over heating and randomly shutting off. Heard about laptop cooling pads but I'm wondering if they really work and is there a specific brand to look for?

no it dont work especially the 10-15 dollars one.... just get some books and place it under the laptop so the air can ventilate.... same with my laptop it overheats and do dumb stuff when it does

i used to have a laptop fan and my laptop stayed hot, i just put a mini fan under it

Def dont work, one of your fans inside the comp is prob broken...had this issue with my old dell

Lol, which Toshiba do you have? I've been having the same problem with mine lately. I was thinking it was static electricity, but could be overheating. If so, taking it apart and cleaning the fan and surrounding areas would be a better solution.

yep my dell... my lil sis knocked it over the table fell vertically and the fan moved...because you can hear it... so i just use two books about 2 inches thick n stack em to keep the laptop from overheating i know it sucks

I have the Satellite A505. I've read that this is a common problem with Toshibas. Guess I'll try to take it apart and clean the fan. Thanks for the advice guys.

it'll increase the longevity of your laptops life if there's not a problem already. in your case since it's already having problems like that there's not much you can do and the fan wont work.

I've had 2 toshibas, they both over heated like crazy & got STUFFED with dust. Clean it out & start using a cooling pad, after a while my toshibas would only stay on if they had a cooling pad connected (or one time I used a mini fan & a milk crate, that thing had my toshiba super cool :hat )

my macbook pro overheated, I had a cooling pad....

maybe it helped a little bit....but at the end of the day, the inevitable happened.

I doubt i'd ever buy another cooling pad again.

Yes.

I used to have an old *** laptop that id try to play counterstrike on and if I didn't have it on a cooling pad it would get so HOT that my FPS would go down to like 5.5 :x

yeah thats a good start. Clean up the fan and any dust close to the cpu. Another important thing is the condition of the thermal glue. If your laptop is about 6months old you should replace the thermal glue (5-10$). This will improve the cooling down of you cpu. A cooling fan will also help in the long run. You have to do something or you risk loosing your laptop.
good luck.

if it overheats to the point where it shuts down then something is wrong with the internal cooling. Either a fan is broken or you have too much dust inside.
cooling pads are not the solution
