The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns are nearing agreement on a blockbuster trade that would send Shaquille O'Neal to Cleveland to team with LeBron James, according to two sources with knowledge of the discussions.

The deal is more than "90 percent" complete, according to the sources, and is merely awaiting final approval from the team's owners.

Cleveland will send Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to Phoenix for the future Hall of Famer.

The trade gives the Cavs a player they've coveted since February. With center Zydrunas Ilgauskas starting to break down, adding Shaq to the roster gives them a dominantforce in the middle. The Cavs were obviously unhappy with their ability to defend DwightHoward in the playoffs and bringing Shaq into the fold should help.

For the Suns, the move is a straight salary dump. Pavlovic's $5 million dollar contract next season is only partially guaranteed for the amount of $1.5million. Factor in the disparities in the contracts between Wallace, Pavlovic and Shaq and the team will save $4.5 milliion next season. However, when youfactor in the savings they'll reap on the luxury tax, it will be closer to $10 million in savings. That savings can be amplified if Wallace decides toretire and the Suns buy him out of his contract for less than the $14 million he's owed next season.

The trade is a pretty strong admission by the Suns that they screwed up when they traded Shawn Marion for Shaq in February of 2007. Marion was a free agent this summer and, had theylet him walk, their savings would've been $21 million not the $5.5 million they're saving in this deal.

When the Suns made the trade they had the best record in the Western Conference. This year they finished in the lottery. With Shaq gone, the question is ...are the Suns finally rebuilding?

Sources say that the team would still like to compete. They still have veterans SteveNash, Amare Stoudemire, Jason Richardson and Leandro Barbosa. They also have the 14th pick in the draft this year and second year playerRobin Lopez.

Minnesota deal on hold and will only happen if Rubio isn't picked at 1-4 and Minn doesn't trade the pick before then.

On a side note, Milwaukee will NOT be offering Charlie Villanueva a qualifying offer. Check out CV31's most recent tweet about where he'd like to play:

LBJ gonna hate being a #2 option.

$5 says Shaq calls Mike Brown a *+#$@ by December.

Bron's work ethic has supposedly been Kobe-esque since the Olympics. Wonder how Shaq's fat, old, lazy +** is gonna like that.

Lets hope they get a better guard while their at it who can ALWAYS hit open shots...

Not just during the season when its not as much pressure...

Shaq been on a UFC type workout plan

And sticking to his diet.

Should be interesting to see the shape he comes in at.

Shaq would provide inside offense and defense to a team that already posted 66 wins the previous year and would team up with a player who carried bench playersto the Finals in 07.

edit: Nice to see the Laker sigs now checking in....

Cleveland Cavaliers' talks with Phoenix Suns about Shaquille O'Neal heating up

Shaquille O'Neal may be closer than ever to being a Cavalier.

According to multiple league sources, the Cavs and Phoenix Suns began intense talks Wednesday about finishing a deal that will bring the four-time champion and future Hall of Famer to Cleveland. One league executive said the talks were "warm" and thought it could be completed Thursday ahead of the NBA Draft.

However, there are some potential hang-ups and the Cavs have other lines in the water. Sources said the Cavs were in serious talks about two other trades that could include multiple teams. One of those teams is believed to be the Los Angeles Clippers, who are dangling big men Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby as they prepare to select Oklahoma forward Blake Griffin with the No. 1 overall pick.

The Cavs, according to a source, also have been in discussions with the New Orleans Hornets, who look to move around their roster before the draft.

The talks also include movement in the draft order, with the Cavs looking to move up from No. 30.

The basics of a deal for O'Neal, who is 37 and has one year and $20 million left on his contract, are well known. The Cavs have offered Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic, both of whom have expiring contracts with Pavlovic's only partially guaranteed. Such a move could save the Suns $9 million in salary and luxury tax and perhaps more if Wallace decides to accept a retirement buyout as he suggested at the end of the season.

According to insiders, the Suns have been trying to get a deal that includes more talent even though they have made it clear they need to reduce their payroll. One team that is perhaps competing with the Cavs is the Chicago Bulls, who could offer a package with more talent but less savings.

The Cavs could try to sweeten their offer with a future draft pick and a prospect like J.J. Hickson to try to work a third team into the deal to get the Suns another player.

With that so complex it is understandable why the Cavs are delving seriously into other deals for big men as a backup plan or perhaps to push the Suns to pull the trigger with the package on the table.

O'Neal is coming off an excellent season in which he averaged 17.8 points, shot 61 percent and played 75 games. He was an All-Star and was named Third Team All-NBA after dealing with an injury-plagued season in 2007-08.

Picking him up now would serve a couple purposes for the Cavs. First it would give them the massive inside presence they have been lacking and proved to be a stumbling block against the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic this season.

Second, because O'Neal is on the last year of his deal it would give the team immense flexibility for the future. If the experiment to match him with LeBron James did not work, he could be traded by February's deadline. Or if the Cavs aren't able to reach their goal of winning a championship O'Neal would come off the books and the Cavs would be in position to attract one of the big-name free agents in 2010.

The same strategy also would apply for a player like Camby, who is going into the final season of his contract. Nowhere near the offensive force O'Neal is, Camby is a strong defensive player and one of the best shot blockers in the NBA.

Probably the same as he liked it before.

Except since it's going to be a temporary thing (and not a long term thing like Shaq and Kobe), Shaq will be all smiles with Bron and Bron will pretend notto mind that Shaq puts forth roughly 1/1000th the effort that he is. Basically, he'll learn from the mistakes in the Kobe/Shaq feud, and he'll makenice for the sake of marketability.

You really believe this?

That trade better include the Phoenix Suns medical / training staff.

This is pretty much cavs last effort to win before bron shakes on them, they're desperate and I don't blame them.

King James'll need to learn to bow down to someone cuz Shaq ain't gonna take (*#&$ from Lebron runnin' his (*&#$.
